Meet the ParticipantsMs Angie Motshega – Honourable Minister of Basic EducationAngelina Matsie Motshekga was born in Pimville, Soweto, where she first became active in variouscapacities in the struggle against apartheid.She holds BA Education and B Ed degrees from the University of the North and a Masters Degreein Education from the University of the Witwatersrand. She has published and conducted research ineducation, women’s development and language studies.Motshekga has had extensive involvement in education struggles and experience in education policy development. Herexperience as an educator includes teaching at Soweto’s Orlando High and lecturing at the Soweto College of Educationand at the University of the Witwatersrand. She has founded and served on various bodies focusing on education andwomen’s development.She has served in the positions of convener for Gender in the Office of the President and trainer in the Department of PublicService and Administration. She was elected as a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature in 1999 and appointedChairperson of the Standing Committee on Education. Subsequently, she was appointed MEC for Social Development in2000 and MEC for Education from April 2004 until 2009.She joined Parliament on 6 May 2009 and was appointed as Cabinet Member of Basic Education on 11 May 2009.She has served the ANC and the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) in different positions at different levels over a longperiod. Currently she is the National President of the ANCWL.She is also a member of the ANC National Executive Committee and National Working Committee.Dr Emmanuel Bonginkosi (Blade) Nzimande – Honourable Minister of HigherEducation and TrainingBorn in Kwa-Dambuza, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa in 1958, Dr Emmanuel Bonginkosi (Blade)Nzimande joined the South African Communist Party (SACP) at the age of 30 and has held theposition of General Secretary of the SACP since July 1998. He is also a member of the ANC NationalExecutive Committee, a member of the ANC National Working Committee and the Chairperson ofthe Financial Sector Coalition Campaign (FSCC).Dr Nzimande obtained his PhD in Industrial Sociology from the University of Natal and is a qualified Industrial Psychologist.Prior to his current position, he was a Member of Parliament at the National Assembly and the first Chairperson ofthe Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Education in the democratic South Africa. He held the position of Director:Education Policy Unit at the University of Natal, and prior to that he lectured in Industrial Psychology at Universities ofZululand and the University of Natal (Durban).Dr Nzimande was a member of the National Education Union of South Africa (NEUSA); the Union of Democratic UniversityStaff Associations (UDUSA); and the National Education Co-ordinating Committee (NECC) and served in many NGOssupporting mass and labour struggles in the 1980s.Dr Nzimande has published numerous works related to his areas of research namely: Education Civil Society and the State,Affirmative Action and Education Policy Development, and Socialism.13
