About <strong>Visy</strong>• Leon Pratt, the founder of <strong>Visy</strong> began manufacturingcorrugated cardboard boxes in Melbourne, Australia, in1948 under the company name of <strong>Visy</strong> Board.• <strong>Visy</strong> <strong>Recycling</strong> was established in 1979 to collect andprocess a range of recyclable materials.• In 2008 <strong>Visy</strong> <strong>Recycling</strong> opened its first <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Onehunga. The mostadvanced in the Southern Hemisphere, its sophisticationmakes recycling even easier.• <strong>Visy</strong> employees over 8000 people and has 13 MRFs, 8Paper Mills, 37 Packaging machine, 5 Glass Sorting, and 5Paper Sorting operations in Australasia.

Auckland MRF – Key FactsInnovative and Forward-looking:The Auckland MRF has the capacity to process recyclables fromother regions and the modular design allows for a straightforwardupgrade to double the original capacity.Site Area and Operation:Occupies 3.6ha of a 10ha site and it is growing . The addition of anew glass plant in 2010 allowed 120,000 tonnes of glass to be recycled per annum.The land is owned by the Auckland City Council and the MRF was constructed in2007/2008 and began operations on 30 th June 2008. The MRF operates 24 hours 5 days aweek.<strong>Recycling</strong> Capacity:Current market volumes the MRF processes 85,000 tonnes or 500,000 cubic meters perannum. The operation has the future capacity to process up to 160,000 tonnes ofrecyclables a year.


The Processing StageDuring the processing stage the recyclable materials are sorted into theirrespective commodities:• Steel and Aluminium (3,500 tonne)• Paper, Cardboard (60,000 tonnes)• Plastic (PET 1000 tonne, HDPE Clear 800 tonne & Mixed Plastic 3,500 tonne)• Glass (MRF 35,000 & Commercial 80,000 tonnes)• Recyclables once sorted are baled in groups. These bales are sent tocustomers who clean and resort, the materials are ready to be processed forremanufacture into new products.• <strong>Visy</strong> reuses the cardboard, paper and plastics, which are manufactured intonew cardboard boxes, displays and soft drink bottles.
