One key theme is the elastic behavior ofthin sheets. The starting point was a variational analysis of blistering in thin films [BBCDM02],which contributed to a new understanding of the origin of microstructure in these systems. Asimplification of the blistering model lead to the scalar Aviles-Giga functional, which was studiedin [CDL07]. I then turned to the situation where compressive Dirichlet boundary conditions byconfinement, as in an obstacle problem. The optimal scaling turned out to be different, beingproportional to the thickness to the power 5/3 [CM08].A second line of thought focused on variational models in crystal plasticity and their relaxation. An explicit relaxation of a geometrically linear model in which finitely many slip systems are activewas obtained in [CO05], and applied to simulate numerically an indentation test in [CHO07].The situation in a geometrically nonlinear setting is considerably more subtle. The relaxationfor an elastically rigid problem with one-slip-system was obtained in [CT05], the case of twoslip systems was then addressed in [ACD09]. The inclusion of a realistic elastic energy stronglyreduces the coercivity of the functional, due to the multiplicative decomposition of the deformationgradient which is used in finite plasticity, leading to a soft behavior if hardening is notincluded [CDK09]. At a finer scale, self-similar dislocation microstructures have been related toHall-Petch effect [CO05] and a line-tension model for dislocations was derived in [CGM11].Supervised thesesBachelor theses: 1Diplom theses: 3PhD theses: 2, currently 2Selected PhD studentsAllan ChanSelected publications
