Since1970, Louis LaPierre has been professor of Wildlife <strong>and</strong> <strong>Environmental</strong>Ecology at the Université de Moncton where he currently holds the K.C.Irving Chair in Sustainable Development <strong>and</strong> is Director of the Master`sprogram in <strong>Environmental</strong> Studies. He was also director of the<strong>Environmental</strong> Science Research Centre at this same university between1990 <strong>and</strong> 1994.As a concerned citizen <strong>and</strong> active member of several environmental groups,he has dedicated the past 30 years to the protection of the environment on aprovincial, national <strong>and</strong> international scale. In addition to chairing theBoard of Directors <strong>and</strong> SRC of the <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Environmental</strong> <strong>Monitoring</strong><strong>and</strong> Research he is currently President of the Fundy Model Forest. Dr.LaPierre has received numerous awards <strong>for</strong> his unfailing commitment to hiscommunity <strong>and</strong> profession.Scientific Review CommitteeThe members of the Scientific Review Committee consists of a group ofrecognized experts in fields related to the types of impacts anticipated fromthe low-level flying program, selected <strong>for</strong> their demonstrated knowledge<strong>and</strong> research profiles on issues related to the northern ecosystem <strong>and</strong> itspeople. Effects of Noise onWildlifeThe <strong>Institute</strong> will host a conferenceon the effects of noise on wildlife inAugust of this year. The conferencewill be held in Happy Valley-GooseBay. The objective is to review thepresent state of knowledge on theimpact of noise on animals in theirnatural habitat. It is hoped thateminent scientists from around theglobe will gather in Labrador todiscuss the impact of noise onwildlife <strong>and</strong> in particular aircraftinduced noise. The agenda willcover such areas as:v Recent research on impacts fromnoise on population dynamics,v breeding behaviour, territorialdisturbances, migration patterns,etc.v Methodology <strong>and</strong> tools whichare being used to study theimpact of noise on wildlife; <strong>and</strong>v Mitigation measures which havebeen initiated in order to reduceor eliminate impacts from noisedisturbances.This conference promises to be anexciting <strong>and</strong> interesting <strong>for</strong>um <strong>for</strong> anexchange of knowledge <strong>and</strong> ideasamongst this discipline's leadingscientists.Pre <strong>and</strong> post-conference tours arebeing organized to give participantsan opportunity to explore the scenicbeauty <strong>and</strong> cultural heritage ofLabrador.In<strong>for</strong>mation on the conference can beobtained from the <strong>Institute</strong> throughRondine Cabot, Coordinator atiemrhvgb@cancom.net / (709) 896-3266 or by visiting the IEMRwebsite at:Http://www.ucs.mun.ca/~iemr . ❋Don't <strong>for</strong>get to register early.
