The USTA/National Junior<strong>Tennis</strong> League (NJTL) is a nation-wide network of communitytennis organizations seeking to develop the character ofyoung people through tennis and education. Two of our newest programsare offered to junior and adult players who have completedsessions in our beginner and advanced beginner tennisclasses. These programs are based on ability.Build-A-Player Program - This program is offered to theadvanced beginner player who has finished at least one 6week session of the advanced beginner tennis classes, fromages 7 and up. It is a natural progression and introduction tomore specific stroke development. As with many other sports for this agegroup, the mini tennis court has been designed for theirsize and capabilities. The changes in court size, netheight and ball makes tennis an easy sport to learn.Teams are formed by the <strong>Sweetwater</strong> teaching staff anddivided up into 8 & under and 10 & under teams. Thefirst four weeks are team lessons for one hour. Theremaining four weeks are thirty minute lessons followedby a team match.Parent’s involvement is necessary. Parents assist tomake sure kids keep score correctly and are calling thelines fairly. Emphasis is on sportsmanship first, notwinning.Registration is in February for spring and in August forfall.10

13Summer Camps<strong>Cobb</strong> <strong>Tennis</strong> League18If school is out, summer camps are in at <strong>Sweetwater</strong><strong>Tennis</strong> <strong>Center</strong>! Offered for all youth players ages 4-16,<strong>Sweetwater</strong> <strong>Tennis</strong> <strong>Center</strong> has a camp for all levels ofplay. Campers are placed into groups of similar abilityand needs.Critter Camp: Ages 4-5, Tuesday-Thursday, 8:30-9:15amFull Camp:Ages 6-16, Monday-Thursday, 8:30am-12noon.A typical morning for campers and mini-campersconsists of warm-up, mechanics work and drills applyingthe practiced mechanics. As the temperature rises andattention span diminishes, we shift to games and matchplay based on ability. Critter camp is focused onsuccessful contact. Little ones love to see foam balls flyoff their racquets as their parents giggle in the shade.We want them to love this lifetime sport! “QuickStart”tennis (shorter court, lower net, lighter ball) will beintroduced to our younger campers to allow them toprogress faster.The <strong>Cobb</strong> <strong>Tennis</strong> League is a round robin format leaguefor singles play only. It grew to almost 10,000 in 1975, 35,000 in 1982,over 51,000 in 1988 and 17,000 in 1992. Today ALTA hasapproximately 90,000 members. It has evolved from a smallgroup of volunteers to a large non-profit corporation licensedby the State of Georgia and recognized by tennis playersaround the world.All participants must be current USTA members and pay a league feefor each season.


15ALTAUSTA16ALTA is a non-profit organization devoted to the developmentof tennis for recreation and physical fitness and is pledged tomaintain the rules of play and high standard of sportsmanship.The primary function of ALTA is scheduling league play foradult teams and junior teams in the five-county metro Atlanta.A facility annexation program was developed in 1988 to includequalifying facilities in counties adjacent to the metro counties.<strong>Sweetwater</strong> serves as home court facility for more ALTA teamsthan any other facility in Atlanta.
