PP2005Developmental work began on anew Web-based data access tool,Research Data Integration andAccess (RDIA), presenting researchfaculty and administrators withan easier way to view projectsponsored data.The new University-wide FinancialManagement System (FMS)began implementation, replacingthe legacy system (CUFS) andimproving access to essentialbusiness informationand integration with otherUniversity systems.NUIT implemented the virusdetection and filtering installmentof the University-wide E-mailDefense System (EDS), which willbe fully deployed in October 2005.In preparation for a move towardsconverged communications,Northwestern began to upgrade itscommunication system to supportboth traditional voice services andSIP-enabled technology.2006The enterprise e-mail filteringsystem, E-mail Defense System(EDS), was implemented to scanall incoming Northwestern e-mailfor junk e-mail and virus threatsbefore it is delivered to theUniversity’s central e-mail servers.The launch of NUIT’s new onlinebilling retrieval service, CONDUITSOnline (Customer Oriented NetworkDelivering University InformationTechnology Services), allowscustomers to view and downloadbilling reports and summariesfor NUIT services.The Converged Services fundingmodel, a simplified approachto funding communicationstechnology costs that recognizeschanges in technology and helpsavoid prior pricing barriers to thefull use of converged technologies,was introduced.Initial work began to standardizeaccess to subject-oriented andsecure data from varyingsystems across the Universityto a single Web Interface forgreater ease-of-use.The new customer-focusedtechnology managementsystem (CONDUITS) will inaugurateintegrated ordering, processing,tracking, and billing of technologyservices online.NUIT implemented Web SingleSign-On (NU Online Passport)initiating a multi-stage process tocentralizing access to Universitywidesystems and services.28 NUIT Annual Report 2007
P2007The NU wireless network wasupgraded with the addition ofa new SSID, “Northwestern”,providing an automatic wirelessconnection without a VPN login.Deployment of Service-OrientedArchitecture (SOA) frameworksbegan, enabling Universityadministrative systems to supportsecure cross-application workflowand real-time transactions.The NUIT Consulting and ProjectOffice was formed providingsupport and assistance in theacquisition of technologysystems to all members of theUniversity community.Upgrades to the campuscommunication closetinfrastructure began ensuring theNU Network will have the neededbandwidth to support voice anddata for SIP-enabled service.Newly hired faculty and staff canactivate their own NetIDs, givingthem access to authenticatedUniversity services up to 30 daysprior to coming to campus througha self-service online tool, NetIDActivation Service.NUIT facilitated a partnershipwith Google and launched a newenhanced collaboration servicecalled @u.northwestern.edu,providing Gmail, Google Calendar,Google Talk, and Google Docs andSpreadsheets to undergraduateand degree-seeking students.Secure Sockets Layer VirtualPrivate Network (SSL VPN) wasimplemented for more secure Webbasedaccess to critical Universitysystems for administrative andmaintenance purposes.Technical support options forstudents were expanded andenhanced with the creation ofa new drop-in laptop computersupport service called Laptop ER,held at multiple campus locations.The Student Response System,an integrated hardware andsoftware system that allowsinstructors to pose questionsand gather students’ responsesduring a lecture, was piloted andimplemented for use by facultyand instructors.The University Committee onInformation Technology (UCIT)Vision 2020 Report was createdwith faculty input, detailingminimum technology requirementsneeded to support research,scholarly, and creative activitythrough 2020.NUIT completed the conversion ofthe Chicago voice platform to allowfor Voice over Internet Protocol(VoIP) services and convergedtelephone and data services.A new open enrollment modulefor benefits administration wascreated with Human ResourcesInformation System (HRIS) selfservice capabilities.An information securityvulnerability assessment programutilizing internal risk evaluationsto identify critical security issuesthroughout University schools anddepartments was implemented.NUIT Annual Report 2007 29
