All of this was done without air conditioning, so thetroops were regularly trucked to our beach to swim and cool off.…that the south end of our beach is still known to many as Manhattan <strong>Beach</strong>?Prior to America’s entry into WWII, German submarines routinely operated closeto the Florida coast, and on at least one occasion, shelled and sank a Britishvessel near our beach. Because we were still a neutral country, American shipsturned on all their lights and stayed close to shore.
