NEWSLETTERFCC VOTES TO BAN WIRELESS MICS ABOVE 700 MEGAHERTZIn a unanimous decision, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC; www.fcc.gov) adopted aproposal by FCC chairman Kevin Martin, voting to prohibit the use of any wireless microphone(licensed or unlicensed) above 700 megahertz following the digital transition, set for February 17,2009. This directly involves parts of block 27, and all of blocks 28 and 29. Following the ban, block27 may still be used below 700MHz (switch settings 0,0 to 5,7)—an 8.8MHz passband. The FCC hasalso expressed interest in banning the production, sale, import or shipment of such devices operatingin the affected range. In related news, in a letter to Kevin Martin, Chuck Wilson, executive director of NSCA (Cedar RapidsIA; www.nsca.org), expressed concern regarding white spaces proceedings and new television bandwidthdevices. “Our members are alarmed by preliminary public reports about the FCC’s inconsistentsensing results,” remarked Wilson. “These inconsistent field tests present a very serious reliabilityissue that will impact our members and their ability to do business.” Early reports indicatemixed results in the field. Some suggest low-power wireless devices might interfere with the DTVspectrum. Supporters of these prototype devices, which include laptops and smart radios, are vyingto share the white spaces of the television spectrum. The FCC is conducting tests to ensure thesedevices do not interfere with digital reception. As recently as August 9, the FCC conducted a test of white spaces devices before and during a BuffaloBills-Washington Redskins game in Washington DC. Results indicated the prototypes did not accuratelysense wireless microphone signals, a function that would be required to prevent interference.INAUGURAL NSCA TECHWEEK EVENT CANCELEDNSCA (Cedar Rapids IA; www.nsca.org) and InfoComm International (Fairfax VA; www.infocomm.org) have canceled the inaugural NSCA TechWeek, sponsored by InfoComm. In exclusive commentsto Sound & Communications, Chuck Wilson, NSCA executive director, said, “TechWeek [was] designedto be an accessible and affordable training event, offering a variety of networking opportunities. In order to fulfill the needs of system contractors, reduce costs and provide the best training, both[InfoComm and NSCA] are working together to determine how this event can be provided in multiplelocations and dates throughout the coming year.” Early feedback indicated members from both organizationshave interest in the training component of the event, but did not see as much need for anyexhibits, given the size of the InfoComm exhibition each June. Future events will not have an exhibitioncomponent.Randal A. Lemke, PhD, executive director, InfoComm International, added, “InfoComm always wantsto deliver a high quality program with great networking opportunities, and it just did not seem possiblein this format.”VIVITEK ENTERS PROFESSIONAL AV DISPLAY MARKETVivitek Corp.
