In Ch<strong>in</strong>a, Atlas Copcoproduces air and gas compressors and generatorsfor a wide range of sectors, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>goil, <strong>in</strong>dustry and ports. Equipment for theconstruction and m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sector is also <strong>in</strong> veryAtlas Copco (Wuxi) Compressor Co.great demand <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a, production for thissector be<strong>in</strong>g concentrated <strong>in</strong> Nanj<strong>in</strong>g, said Jos Van Beneden, General Manager of Atlas Copco (Wuxi)Compressor Co. When Atlas Copco acquired Dynapac, it also ga<strong>in</strong>ed a facility <strong>in</strong> Tianj<strong>in</strong>. The plant <strong>in</strong>Antwerp is Atlas Copco’s largest production facility for compressors worldwide, closely followed by itsWuxi facility. “That’s partly why I was <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> Wuxi”, said Van Beneden.FCCC Members’ Portrait <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a No 14, October 20091Shared services necessitate central guidance for a decentralised adm<strong>in</strong>istrationThe f<strong>in</strong>ancial management of the Atlas Copco Group can be characterised as a centrally guideddecentralised adm<strong>in</strong>istration, with the same core guidel<strong>in</strong>es and procedures implemented throughoutthe entire Group, while each site has a decentralised adm<strong>in</strong>istration. Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g support is available<strong>in</strong> India, and Atlas Copco has its own bank for <strong>in</strong>ternal f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g. On the other hand, each company<strong>in</strong> the Group emphasises its local management. “We highly value people’s development”, said JosVan Beneden. “We have three expatriates here for the moment, and when I leave Ch<strong>in</strong>a I hope myjob will be taken over by a Ch<strong>in</strong>ese professional”, he went on. The company strives to be a preferredemployer and aims to attract, develop and hold onto qualified, motivated <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>in</strong> a professionalenvironment.Recently, Atlas Copco (Wuxi) Compressor received a ‘Very Good (Green)’ company certificate fromWuxi’s Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau. The Water for All programme, which is organisedand managed by Atlas Copco employees, is promoted by the Group’s headquarters <strong>in</strong> all its companies.Last year it came to Ch<strong>in</strong>a. Under the scheme, Atlas Copco donates one yuan for every oneyuan contributed by the Group’s employees,. So far, 90% of staff on the payroll of Atlas Copco (Wuxi)Compressor have contributed to the programme.The strategy of the Group is to go for wholly-owned subsidiaries. All Atlas Copco companies <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>aare centralised with<strong>in</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gle hold<strong>in</strong>g company, the Shanghai-based Atlas Copco (Ch<strong>in</strong>a) InvestmentCo.. Thomas Kung, based <strong>in</strong> Hong Kong, is its Chairman and the Swede Magnus Gyllo is its VicePresident. The Group also has a trad<strong>in</strong>g company and distribution spare parts centre <strong>in</strong> Shanghai.Edward Jones is Regional General Manager for the Shanghai-based Compressor Technique.

Three key people <strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and three <strong>in</strong> purchas<strong>in</strong>gattended a two-year tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course <strong>in</strong> Antwerp and have now returned to the factory <strong>in</strong> Wuxias project leaders. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the present crisis it is important to hang on to a well-tra<strong>in</strong>ed workforce.The Group has also scaled up <strong>in</strong>-sourc<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>, so it is produc<strong>in</strong>g more of its own products. Anothercrucial factor is excellent communication and cooperation with suppliers, which makes many th<strong>in</strong>gspossible”, Van Beneden concluded. Atlas Copco (Wuxi) started to feel the effects of the crisis back <strong>in</strong>September last year, but took swift action, so the Group’s situation started to improve <strong>in</strong> February.Jos Van Beneden has also launched a traffic safety campaign <strong>in</strong> the company because he felt responsiblewhen his employees were <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> traffic accidents. “Now that I have warned them to becareful, it is their responsibility to avoid tak<strong>in</strong>g risks <strong>in</strong> traffic and to follow traffic rules”, Van Benedenexpla<strong>in</strong>ed.Flemish CEO to head Atlas Copco GroupIn June, the 52-year old Ronnie Leten, a Flem<strong>in</strong>g born <strong>in</strong> Limburg, became the Atlas Copco’s Group’sChairman and CEO, tak<strong>in</strong>g over from Gunnar Brock. It is only the second time s<strong>in</strong>ce Atlas Copco wasfounded <strong>in</strong> 1873, that a non-Swede has been appo<strong>in</strong>ted head of the Group, which had 34,000 employeesworldwide <strong>in</strong> 2008. Ronnie Leten started his career at Atlas Copco <strong>in</strong> 1985 and rose throughthe ranks to become head of its Airtec Division <strong>in</strong> 1999 and of the Industrial Air Division <strong>in</strong> 2001. S<strong>in</strong>ce2006, Ronnie Leten had been CEO of the Compressor Technique bus<strong>in</strong>ess area and of Atlas CopcoAirpower NV/SA <strong>in</strong> Wilrijk, near Antwerp. He relocated from Mol to Stockholm to lead the Group.FCCC Members’ Portrait <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a No 14, October 20093Jos Van BenedenLearn<strong>in</strong>g from experiencesJos Van Beneden has some advice to give companies th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a, say<strong>in</strong>g thatanyone “only start<strong>in</strong>g to th<strong>in</strong>k about do<strong>in</strong>g so now is way too late except when the presence <strong>in</strong> theCh<strong>in</strong>ese market with manufactur<strong>in</strong>g or a strong sales organisation is a priority.” Before any companytakes the plunge, he suggests it contact other well-established companies <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a to learn from theirexperiences. They would also do well to contact local companies <strong>in</strong>tent on attract<strong>in</strong>g foreign <strong>in</strong>vestment.Atlas Copco’s man <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>aJos Van Beneden is an Atlas Copco veteran, spend<strong>in</strong>g five years <strong>in</strong> Germany for the Groupfrom 1996 to 2000, followed by four years <strong>in</strong> France. In 2004, he went to Ch<strong>in</strong>a to becomeGeneral Manager of Atlas Copco Wuxi after the Group decided to double the company’sproduction capacity <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a.His wife accompanied him to Ch<strong>in</strong>a and the couple feels at home <strong>in</strong> Wuxi and are not enviousof others liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> bigger cities like Shanghai and Beij<strong>in</strong>g. Communication is sometimesdifficult, as Ch<strong>in</strong>ese is a difficult language. The Van Benedens visited Ch<strong>in</strong>a for the first time<strong>in</strong> 2001, on holiday, not know<strong>in</strong>g that a few years later they would move there.At weekends, Jos likes to play golf, while dur<strong>in</strong>g the week his wife jo<strong>in</strong>s the activities of theWuxi Ladies Club.
