New Book Clubs Begin<br />

Thursdays, August 9 & 16<br />

River Lights Books<strong>to</strong>re, 1098 Main St.,<br />

<strong>Dubuque</strong>, has two new book groups <strong>for</strong>ming.<br />

Art Lovers are invited <strong>to</strong> join the Page & Palette<br />

book group, first meeting August 9 at 6:30 p.m.<br />

The read will be Luncheon of the Boating Party<br />

by Susan Vreeland, led by art his<strong>to</strong>rian Julie<br />

Schlarman. The Chow Bella group will focus<br />

on books <strong>for</strong> people who love good food. Their<br />

first meeting (and chocolate tasting), August<br />

16, will be at Cookin’ Something Up, 1640 JF<br />

Kennedy Rd., at 6:00 p.m. Their first book will<br />

be Paris, My Sweet by Amy Thomas. There is<br />

a cost <strong>for</strong> both book groups. The books are<br />

available at River Lights Books<strong>to</strong>re and more<br />

Fall Writing Workshops<br />

Monday, August 20-27th, 6-8 p.m.<br />

A beginning Writing <strong>for</strong> Publication is designed<br />

<strong>to</strong> jumpstart <strong>your</strong> writing and help you begin<br />

<strong>your</strong> journey on the path <strong>to</strong> publication. This<br />

event is given by Mary Potter Kenyon<br />

Two sessions are offered – Cost is $15 each or<br />

$26 <strong>for</strong> both. Pre-registration is required and<br />

class size is limited.<br />

NEW DIGGINGS MUSIC FESTIVAL<br />

Friday-Sunday, August 10-12<br />

The 7th Annual New Diggings General S<strong>to</strong>re<br />

Music Festival in New Diggings, Wisconsin<br />

features an entire weekend of food, free live<br />

music, and fun! This year’s lineup will feature:<br />

Apple Dumplins at 8:00 p.m. on Friday;<br />

Eugene Smiles Project at 2:00 p.m. and<br />

Aaron Williams and the Hoo Doo at 8:00 pm.<br />

on Saturday; and Blackwater Gin at 2:00 p.m.<br />

on Sunday.<br />

GETTING’ DOWN IN THE DISTRICT –<br />

BLOCK PARTY SCREENING EVENT<br />

Thursday, August 9<br />

The Julien <strong>Dubuque</strong> International Film Festival,<br />

in conjunction with The Millwork District and<br />

Voices from the Warehouse, will host Gettin’<br />

Down in the District – Block Party Screening<br />

Event on Thursday, August 9 with a collaborative<br />

block party.<br />

The free Block Party will start at 4:00 p.m.<br />

and feature artists from the upcoming Voices<br />

from the Warehouse event. Other participants<br />

include: the <strong>Dubuque</strong> Food CO-OP, <strong>Dubuque</strong><br />

Art Center, <strong>Dubuque</strong> Main Street, and Fly By<br />

Night Productions. Gronen Properties will<br />

host <strong>to</strong>urs of the newly renovated lofts in the<br />

Caradco Building. Live music will be provided<br />

by Boomtangle. This event will coincide with<br />

the Iowa Legislature visit.<br />

The block party will culminate with a film<br />

screening of the award-winning film A Million<br />

Spokes – which won Best of Iowa at the<br />

Julien <strong>Dubuque</strong> Int’l Film Festival in April. A<br />

Million Spokes Producer, Susan Gorrell, will<br />

be a guest at the event. The film screening will<br />

kickoff with the announcement of the winner of<br />

the Dupaco Credit Union ‘Shift In<strong>to</strong> Thrift’ Video<br />

WINGFEST<br />

Saturday, August 11<br />

The City of East <strong>Dubuque</strong>, IL and the East <strong>Dubuque</strong> Warrior<br />

Booster Club invite both cookers, eaters and wingmen <strong>to</strong> the<br />

Seventh Annual Wingfest, August 11, 11:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. in<br />

the down<strong>to</strong>wn. Yes, indeed. Again it’s time <strong>to</strong> partake in those<br />

scrumptious little tidbits of delectable white meat, prepared<br />

in a myriad of taste bud tempting flavors – everything from<br />

honey sweet <strong>to</strong> 5-alarm-<strong>to</strong>ngue-terror – cooked right be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

<strong>your</strong> eyes on his<strong>to</strong>ric Sinsinawa Avenue. The wing-cooking<br />

contest entry fee is $50. Entrants are given 800 <strong>to</strong> 1000 wings<br />

<strong>to</strong> cook, with several held back <strong>for</strong> judging, the rest will be distributed<br />

(beginning at 2:00 p.m.) <strong>to</strong> individuals who purchase<br />

$5 punch cards. The cook-off judging will encompass seven<br />

categories: Best Traditional Wing Sauce; Best BBQ Wing<br />

Sauce; Most Unique Wing Sauce; Restaurant Division; Back<br />

Yard Chef’s; Showmanship; and People’s Choice. For the<br />

“People’s Choice” Award, every cook will receive a container<br />

<strong>to</strong> collect “ballots” in, but instead of giving people tickets <strong>to</strong> cast their votes, participants will<br />

be asked <strong>to</strong> vote by donating a buck or two <strong>to</strong> their favorite cook(s). The team that collects the<br />

most money <strong>for</strong> the Warrior Booster Club will be the winner of the “People’s Choice” Award.<br />

There will be free inflatable rides <strong>for</strong> the kids from noon-5:00 p.m., kid’s fun and games<br />

from1:00-4:00 p.m., and live entertainment featuring Boomtangle and other acts <strong>to</strong> be announced.<br />

Beverages will be available <strong>for</strong> purchase and other food vendors will be set up as<br />

well. There is no charge <strong>to</strong> attend. All proceeds from Wingfest bene<strong>fit</strong> The East <strong>Dubuque</strong><br />

Warrior Booster Club.<br />
