AUTO MASTERS - REDINK HOMES GERALDTON OCEAN CLASSIC 2010Jamie’s LimitsStory as told to Bernie KaaksAnyone who has ever tried to sail aboat single handed would understandsome of the challenges face by lonesailors who undertake long andsometimes dangerous voyages. Mostof those would also have some ideaof the additional challenges face by aperson with disabilities sailing alone –or would they? This year Jamie Dunross becamethe first quadriplegic to successfullycomplete a circumnavigation ofAustralia after an epic voyage in hisS&S 34 Spirit of Rockingham. Heexplained one of his challenges toBernie Kaaks.“When I left Rockingham in a brisksouthwesterly, the weather patterndid not look too bad, but deterioratedpretty quickly as I approached CapeLeeuwin. Do you remember the stormthat hit Perth early in the year thatdamaged buildings and dented carswith hailstones bigger than golf balls?Well that’s the storm that hit me.I was well prepared for bad weather. You don’t undertake a voyage likethis without making plans for such anevent, but being prepared and facingthe reality turned out to be poles apart, and took me not just out of my comfortzone, but well beyond my limits. The seas were horrendous. Hugeswells and big breaking waves threwSpirit of Rockingham all over theplace. I could not stay in the cockpitin those conditions, so I reduceddown to storm rig and settled downto ride it out. I was making very slowprogress. With lots of water sloshingaround in the cabin and no idea whereit was coming from, I decided to headfor Albany. For the first time I wasfrightened.Sleep was impossible. I noticed aship on the radar, but my AIS hadnot gone off, so I reasoned that therewas no danger of conflict. In betterconditions, I would have gone outto the cockpit to visually assess thesituation, but confident that we weresafe, continued to watch the radar. As the ship entered the 5 nauticalmile circle on my radar screen and Ibecame concerned. Although the AISstill had not gone into alarm mode,I was now seriously worried andprepared the chair to hoist myselfinto the cockpit. This takes abit of time. When the chair reachedcockpit level, two thingshappened simultaneously– The AIS alarm startedscreaming and I saw thebow of the ship headingstraight towards us! Ihad to disconnect the selfsteering immediately or wewere doomed. Don’t askme why, but images of JessicaWatson fleeted across my mind, remembering her collision with afreighter. Was it an S&S 34 jinx?To this day, I have no idea howI left the chair and threwmyself alongthe length of thecockpit to tear thechain off the selfsteering and put the yacht about. It allhappened very quickly. As the ship went by, it sounded a longblast on the horn. The whole yachtreverberated with the deafening noise.Seconds later we were hit by theship’s bow wave, which swept acrossthe cockpit and rolled Spirit onto itsbeam ends. It was the one time thatI found myself in the cockpit without alife jacket on and the only time I was indanger of being swept overboard! We eventually rode out the storm andlimped into Princess Royal Harbour. The yacht and I were pretty batteredand bruised, but we had survived!”Auto Masters - Redink Homes Geraldton Ocean Classic Race Program 2010 25

Initiallythis was done from the starttower and then a start boat waspurchased. For 30 plus years, Elaine startedthe Geraldton Race, originallywith Taffy Turner, but took overthe helm when Taffy retired. Herhusband Brian drove the start boat and together withPast Commodore Bob Dutch, they did a wonderful jobfor Geraldton Yacht Club.Elaine was also a member of the Ladies Committeeand during the Geraldton RaceWeek, would be serving ourbreakfasts, washing dishes etc.BUS TIMETABLEGreyhoundTo PerthDeparts Geraldton Sunday 24th October – 1015Arriving East Perth Sunday 24th October – 1620To GeraldtonNo Service Thursday 28th Octoberwww.greyhound.com.au/bookings or Ph: 1300 473 946Trans WATo PerthDeparts Geraldton Sunday 24th October - 0930Arriving East Perth Sunday 24th October - 1530To GeraldtonDeparts East Perth Thursday 28th October – 0830Arriving Geraldton Thursday 28th October – 1620www.transwa.wa.gov.au or Ph 1300 662 205Information current as viewed on internet asat 14th October, 2010She and Brian befriended Finisterein the early 1970’s and forthe next 30 years, they wouldholst the crew for a seafood extravaganzaat their house - crayfish, prawns, fish, squid were allbarbecued by Brian and Elaineand her girls, sue and Julie whomade beautiful salads. Over theyears, more and more yachtieswere invited to this banquet and we are all grateful toBrian and Elaine and the girls for their warm hospitality. It was therefore a great sadness when Elaine died earlierthis year. She will be sadly missed not only at GYCbut by all the offshore yachties who had the privilidge ofknowing her.Sadly Brian has also been hospitalised for the last threemonths and we all hope he will be up and about soon.Elaine was honoured with Life Membership at GYC forher sterling efforts and over the years as starter and hercontribution to the ladies committee.Auto Masters - Redink Homes Geraldton Ocean Classic Race Program 2010 33
