REDINK HOMES GERALDTON OCEAN CLASSIC 2013South of Perth Yacht Club Tributes Andrew DawsonThis column is traditionally devoted to a high profile person or yacht. This year more than ever, we have a galaxy ofstars to select from. With the Bali Race scheduled to start in a couple of weeks’ time, it would be an opportune time totalk about the arrival of a super maxi (Super Sled) in Western Australian for the first time ever.Gary McNally and his crew continue to amaze with their performance on the 42 foot flying machine, Black Betty. Giventhe right weather conditions, Black Betty will threaten the record for the race to Geraldton, but will have to beat thecurrent record holder, General Lee and her race-hardened crew to do so.The yachts that rarely get a mention in these pages though, are the very yachts that make our offshore racing programpossible. Crews who love their ocean racing, do so within the confines of a tight budget and sail with a bunch of likemindedmates rather than recruiting the State’s most successful yachtsmen to make up their teams. One such combination is Andrew Dawson and his 36 foot Dufour, Knot Dreaming, which will be sadly missed in thisyear’s Geraldton Classic because his preparations for Bali are now in full swing.Coming through the club ranks with smaller craft, Andrew started offshore sailing on a regular basis when he boughtthe UFO34 Unicorn. He became South of Perth Yacht Club’s most regular offshore yachtsman, rarely missing a raceand enjoying his sport with one of the smallest yachts in the fleet, invariably finishing towards the tail end but loving hisinvolvement. One of his sweetest achievements, and perhaps a ringing endorsement of Andrew’s attitude towards offshore sailing, was his win in the Rally Division of the 2011 Bali Race. His communication skills and excellent radio equipment makehim a favourite among race management teams. Knot Dreamingis always on standby to act as a relay for yachts with less reliableequipment. We could make similar comments about Peter Vlaar, who started hisoffshore sailing in the steel hulled Mako but became a serious force inthe offshore scene when he bought the Farr 2 tonner, Farrago, whichhe has literally sailed everywhere (on the Australian coast). Farragowon the Siska Trophy in 2002/03, so it could be said that Peter Vlaartakes his racing somewhat more seriously that Andrew Dawson. The two have much in common though. Both run their boats withinaffordable budgets. Both are excellent readers of weather and seaconditions, having a well developed “sixth sense” to warn them wherenot to be when the weather starts to turn ugly. Both are among themost reliable radio communicators in the offshore fleet and both seemto look after their boats to avoid breakages. It is ironic that neither Farrago nor Knot Dreaming will be competingin this year’s Geraldton Classic, for they are part of the silent majoritymaking up the offshore fleet, who enjoy their time at sea for what itis, and not for what they can expect to get out of it. They like to partywithout going over the top and make pretty good role models foraspiring offshore sailors, don’t they?Redink Homes Geraldton Ocean Classic Race Program 2013 15
