With the likes of Skip Lissman, Damian Fewster,Chris Sutherland, John Longley and Peter Gilmour on show, the odds were likely that there would besome good racing. Former world match racing champion Peter Gilmour took the racing by the scruff ofthe neck, winning 2 out of the 3 races including the triple point race in the harbour and it was a treat tosee the way they worked the gusts that came down from the nor east. All of this was a precursor to themain event, the Harbour Classic.South of Perth had 4 boats invited to join the event, Chris Hind’s Sagacious, Peter Vlaar and Farrago,Ross Swanson’s Syrenka and P.C. Guy Skinner’s Turnham Green. On a soft day, with the breeze struggling in from the west, the lighter boats were going to be advantaged;the first three named boats were struggling to make their speed and only Guy and his merry bunch ofwarriors had a chance, but it took a “Wild Bull” to get over the line first, starting at the 16 minute dropand beating 15 boats to get to the line first. Well done Dominic. The fastest boat on the day was GaryMcNally’s Black Betty. After all the slow speed racing on the day, we dropped into the Fremantle Sailing club for results and aconvivial ale and the crews of Farrago and Sagacious got together for a photograph and I was fortunateenough to catch them in the act. Other people from SoPYC were John and Christina Heydon in theirofficial capacities; Commodore Paul and Dianne, Bernie and Lana Kaaks and at least another 10 peopleI recognised on the fly. A good day was had by all and the interaction of the boats on the river with theocean racers at these events, ensures the mutual regard for all.Rick SteuartT: 9472 6960E: pwarwick@vibropile.com.auNOTIFICATION: TRAILERSShould you have a boat on theWestern Hardstand please ensurethat your name and telephonenumber is displayed on yourboat’s trailer/jinker. An inspectionhas revealed many boats on thehardstand do not meet this Clubrequirement. There has been a boatclamped because it is unidentifiedand parked in another member’sallocated pen.HOME

Crack sailing husband and wifeteam and former World Champions Nick andJanet Jerwood took a very convincing first inthe last race to place them second over all inthe championships in Hong Kong.Working their boats in everything, including thestiff breezes prior to a typhoon and then copingwith the big swells thereafter, the top runners inthe flying 15’s showed that consistency wouldpay off. The last day was the pay off as theywere sailing in 10 to 12 knot easterlies with theremnants of the big swell from the weekend’styphoon and the Jerwoods leapt into the front, working at maintaining a big lead to ensure that theykept their second spot alive. The tactic succeeded and they tucked the win under their belts. The current world champions Graham Vials and Chris Turner had sailed extremely well and had kepttwo former world champions at bay in the Jerwoods and Steve Goacher with Royal Freshie’s GrantAnderson and Dean McAullay dogging their heels in the Nationals and the Worlds. The final results for South of Perth were: Ineffable the Jerwoods 2 nd , Storyteller Chris Paterson andRupert Leslie 10 th , Spot the Difference Greg Tonnison and Steve Roberts 14 th , Mr Fox Jade and WilliamLane 20th, Fflashpoint Peter Rooke and Martin Arrowsmith 22nd, Fast Lane 4 John Wilson and DavidTucker 28th, Ffatal Attraction Murray Latham and Nigel Davis 45 th and Frequent Flyer Jennifer Sims withAndrew Wallace 46th.One or two of the SoPYC boats had guest crew on board, but the performance that the F15’s from Southof Perth put on was a credit to the club and the Flying 15 sailors who form part of it.FRIDAY 15 NOVEMBERBar Menu available from 1200-2100 hrs• A la Carte Menu available for lunch(1200-1500 hrs) and dinner (from 1800hrs)• **Specials that change daily**SATURDAY 16 NOVEMBERBar Menu available from 1200-2100 hrs• A la Carte Menu available for lunch(1200-1500 hrs) and dinner (from 1700-2000 hrs)• **Specials that change daily**• Keelboat Club Championship Day 3;1325hrs & 1625hrsSUNDAY 17 NOVEMBERA la Carte Menu available for lunch(bookings from 1330hrs)• A la Carte Menu available for dinner(1700-2000hrs)• **Specials that change daily**• Centreboard Club Championship Day2; 1325hrs• Sea ShantiesFlying FifteensThe patience of both competitor and start team was amplyrewarded with 3 races in a splendid westerly and a mixed bag ofresults best obtained from the web site.Highlight of the day was Carl (the skipper) listening to Kristine (the crew) resulting in Kerfuffle being fastest for the second race....and a bell ring.Lowlight of the day was John (the skipper) listening to Tony (thecrew) resulting in She who must be obeyed returning to restart only to discover that the “X” flag flewnot for them. Should have been a bell ring.Encouraging to see Tim (El Presidente) Bussemaker hobbling around the rigging area following hisrecent escape from hospital.Next Sunday is the second of the Spring Series races and, hopefully, some members returning fromHong Kong to see what they’ve been missing.MONDAY 18 NOVEMBERBar Menu available from 1200-1500 hrs• A la Carte Menu available for lunch(1200-1500 hrs)• **Specials that change daily**• Finance Meeting 1800hrs• SS22 Meeting 1830hrs• Flying Fifteen Meeting 1930hrsTUESDAY 19 NOVEMBERBar Menu available from 1200-1500 hrs• A la Carte Menu available for lunch(1200-1500 hrs)• **Specials that change daily**• House Meeting 1800hrs• Regatta Meeting 1800hrs• Div Two Meeting 1830hrsHOME

RESULTS• Wednesday AfternoonRacing• Saturday Racing (Keel-boats)• Sunday Racing (Centreboards)• Power Time Trialling• IGA Keelboat FrostbiteSeries• Solo Winter DevelopmentSeriesANY PORT IN A TWILIGHT STORMAt some stage during the twilight season the races will no doubt be be cancelled for safety reasonsas a storm comes through the city on a Wednesday evening. This does not mean that you have todisappoint your crew and friends and many yachty’s over the years have found simple pleasures toamuse themselves in a storm. On these rare occasions a few quite beverages on the back of theboat or in the shelter of the cabin and out of the rain with a bowlof nibbles and perhaps a pack of cards can be a very entertainingalternative to being bounced around out in the river in 30 knotsof wind. Some boats also choose to test the storm and reefing gear orindeed run bare poled under motor for a little ‘tonk’ aroundMartin Weaver. A half an hour under your No 4 heady for aheart pumping run to Crawley bay and back can be a safe andentertaining run in heavy weather when racing is not really aviable option.Afterwards its back to the club for perhaps an earlier than usualmeal on the quarterdeck while the kids kick a ball around orplay on the playground. The club is always ready to cater for thecrowd and a fine dining experience can still be enjoyed when theweather is lousy for sailing.Remember to keep Twilight sailing night blocked out in your diaryas a social obligation on yourself and your friends and make do with what is offered up in the way ofweather and the memories will be filled with variety.Whilst the Club may sensibly cancel formal racing you’re the skipper and it’s your call as to how you runyour boat and whether you leave the pen for an informal cruise. Take care and have fun.See you on the water or in the bar.The Evening ScribeThe South of Perth Yacht Club presents the...To celebrate Christmas, the newly renovated Dinghy Club House and Pre-Nationals / States. We are having a photo booth with props and a memory book and an interactive DJ (Grab the Mic!!) with bubbleand smoke machines and lights, pizza and wedges and a soft drink - all for just $15.Chips, cans, lolly bags and chocolates will also be on sale on the night at the galley.DATE: SATURDAY 14TH DECEMBER 2013TIME:WHERE:7.00PM TO 10.00PMSOPYC DINGHY CLUB HOUSEFURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT:Serena Kipling, SoPYC Optimist Fleet - Chairperson 2013/2014 on 0404 024 080

A hard day out for some. All boats who attended the event were power vessels, the cruising section really hope to encouragesome of our sailing members to come along when they are not competing.See you on the water soon !!!Cruising Section - Upcoming EventsNOVEMBER 2013• 28th November 2013 - Abrolhos Presentation.
