RELIABILITY FORCOMMERCIAL RIBA Yanmar twin engine package has been chosen for the latestHumber RIB. ʻLakefastʼ, built by Humber Inflatables and riggedby Quinquari Marine, is an 11 metre Commercial Offshore wideRIB fitted with twin Yanmar 315hp engines with two MerCruiserBravo 2 sterndrives.ʻLakefastʼ has been built for John Lake Marine Hire in KingsLynn, Norfolk, a company that specialises in the hire of rigidinflatables and work boats.Capable of providing around 40 knots, the ʻLakefastʼ is suitablefor charter, security, diving, photography, media and event supportand a host of specialist applications as well as a fully-crewedwork boat.A REVOLUTIONARYNEW STERNDRIVEMercury MerCruiser Vazer is a 100hp sterndrive engine builtwith a compact design. It features a significantly reduced engineheight that allows it to fit under seats, platforms and decks of avariety of boats including pontoons, fishing boats and runabouts.The unique design of Vazer allows boat builders to utilise morespace for passengers and gear, and provides improved access tothe water compared to traditional sterndrive or outboard engines.“Vazer will revolutionise the boating industry”, comments KevinGrodzki, president of MerCruiser. “This sterndrive system willenable boat builders to design boats in configurations previouslyunimaginable.”Vazer is based on a proven 1.6L GM Vortec SOHC 4-cylinder enginewith an all new compact sterndrive. The engine also featuresa compact composite intake manifold that maintains a long intakerunner design for excellent torque and horsepower. It is anticipatedthat Vazer will be available in the UK in June 2007.POWERS <strong>THE</strong> ULTIMATE RIB PACKAGELynx Sports Management, a specialist events company,has chosen Mercury Verado outboard engines for theirlatest initiative.The Lynx RIB Club, an exclusive owners club devised by Lynx,offers all the excitement of owning a RIB without the hassle andexpense. Lynx has teamed up with Scorpion RIBs, the marketleader in RIB design and manufacture to provide the ultimate RIBpackage. Two 8.1 metre Scorpion RIBs powered by supercharged275hp Mercury Verado engines will be available to club membersproviding the very latest in performance, reliability and safety.There are three levels of membership available, gold, silver andbronze entitling members to between 10 and 20 days boating peryear. The boats which seat up to ten people, are pre-fuelled andvaleted leaving the maximum time on the water to water-ski,lunch on the Isle of Wight or barbecue on the remote beaches ofStudland Bay.


John Deere engines are specified foruse in wide and varied projects aroundthe world and this latest application isno exception. <strong>Barrus</strong> has supplied sixJohn Deere 6.8L turbo charged dieselengines (John Deere 6068TF150,127kW, 170hp) to Tramspread to befitted into slurry spreaders. Tramspeed,a small agricultural equipment supplierbased in Mendlesham, Suffolk specialisesin the supply of slurry handlingequipment. The slurry spreader is anumbilical machine that pumps theA new British manufacturingcompany, GBT Products has chosen aYanmar engine for their new mobilediesel woodchipper. Greville Bray,Managing Director of GBT, based inBoston, Lincolnshire, has been anarborist for 20 years and he hasalways wanted to build his ownchipper. The GBT 367, the first modelin the range, is a 7” mobile 36hp dieselwoodchipper which has been fittedwith a Yanmar 3TNV88 36hp dieselengine. Anotherimportant factor was the convenienceof a local John Deere service agent.”The slurry spreader has recently beenshown at an agricultural exhibition inMoscow where Tramspread receivedconsiderable interest.GBT RELY ONaffair, with Grevilleʼs brother,Timothy, a design engineer in theUSA having a significant input to thefive year project. “There were twofactors that influenced our choice ofengine”, comments Greville Bray,Managing Director of GBT Ltd.“Firstly, the Yanmar engine is verywell respected within the plant andmachinery industry so our customerswere confident about the product andsecondly the help and support from<strong>Barrus</strong> during the project was secondto none.”BARRUS INVESTIN YOUNG ENGINEERS<strong>Barrus</strong> has recently taken on three engineeringapprentices in a scheme operated by the AylesburyTraining Group (ATG). ATG has beentraining and developing young adults (16-24)for over 30 years and is the largest companyof its kind in the Thames Valley. Will Stevens,James Tonk and Jonathan Hotard spent aninitial six months at ATG learning basic skillsincluding machining, metal working, electricsand electronics, before joining <strong>Barrus</strong> on a threeyear apprenticeship. The three trainees willexperience all areas of production at <strong>Barrus</strong>before being assigned to a particular area ofproduction. Will Stevens, who has been withthe company since last year, is currently workingwithin Yanmar inboard engine build, “Froman early age I have been interested in enginesand this opportunity with <strong>Barrus</strong> will equip mewith the best possible engineering skills.”Ian Sturman, Manufacturing Manager for <strong>Barrus</strong>comments, “This is an excellent scheme forboth the trainees and <strong>Barrus</strong>.
