Making a Difference - A Donor’s StoryRobert recalls coming out as a young gay man, living anisolated existence in the suburbs of Winnipeg in the early1980’s, and being fortunate enough to find one of the fewopenly gay doctors who made a point of welcoming andproviding a safe space for LGBT patients. That experiencehas given him a deep appreciation of Sherbourne’s inclusiveapproach. It also helped motivate him to give back – initiallyas a monthly donor and SOY mentor in 2005, now also as aBoard member, in what he describes as a natural evolution.Robert’s monthly gift helps support SOY’s ongoing servicesfor queer and trans youth. These include the “CLICK”mentoring program, weekly groups and other empoweringactivities. He describes hearing a number of SOY youth talkabout what they get from both SOY and their mentors ata get-together. “They were amazing. It was so moving tohear what some of them had been through and how they’remaking their way in the world, with help from SOY andeach other. I thought, ‘this is what it’s all about; this is thedifference we’re making’.”A couple of years laterRob decided to getinvolved beyond whathe calls the “moreserious services”, tobecome a major sponsorof SOY and the Triangle Program’s annual ‘Pride Prom’ aswell – something he never had the chance to enjoy in hisown teenage years. “I thought it was a really creative andfun way to celebrate these young people – and to provide asafe, accepting space for their coming out. I thought ‘that’ssomething I can get behind’.”“I thought, ‘this is whatit’s all about; this is thedifference we’re making’.”Several years on he’s still behind it and, having taken thechance to watch a bit of the Prom from the sidelines oneyear, he’s seen first hand the impact it makes. “We needto create more spaces where LGBT youth experience joy inwho they are. That’s part of making our community healthyas well,” he says. We couldn’t agree more.Robert joined Sherbourne’s Board after working withthem for a while as a community member on a BoardCommittee. “I have a lot of respect for them,” he said.“They make a huge contribution… a huge difference”.11
