While appealing for the recognition of Yolngu rights to land, the Bark Petitions were a catalyst in advancing changes to the Constitution in the1967 referendum, the statutory acknowledgment of Aboriginal land rights by the Commonwealth in 1976, and the overturning of the obstacle ofthe concept of terra nullius by the High Court in the Mabo Case in 1992 that recognised the traditional rights of the Meriam people to theirislands in the eastern Torres Strait.Today, we look to a future that better understands and celebrates the unique connection that Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islander’s share tocountry, as we continue to build an Australia that reflects the achievements and furthers the aspirations of our people.Mrs Mungovan has liaised with the National Parks and Wildlife to provide students with activities that educate and celebrate this year’s theme.We have utilised school funding to cover this cost.I would like to thank Mr Rod Borst, our General Assistant for all his hard work making our school a safer place. Recently he has placed tape onour many poles to highlight where they are, painted white on the edging of our steps and painstakingly filled the senior playground equipmentwith soft fall. His pride in his work is evident throughout our school grounds. We appreciate and thank him for this.This week Mrs Anne Tolhurst joined our school as the Canteen Supervisor. Mrs Tolhurst has had extensive experience in school canteens and isdelighted to have been appointed to the position. We welcome her to our wonderful school.Next Thursday will be the first of our new formatted weekly assemblies. There are still some outstanding forms and they must be returned by Friday 19th July.If your child is NOT going to OFHS please inform Mrs Wigny as soon as possible which high school your child will be attending in 2014. AliceWignySOUTHERN STARS A reminder that our next Southern Stars Rehearsal is Tuesday 23rd July at Wollongong Indoor Cricket Centre. Studentsneed to be at school by 8:15am and meet Miss Atkins under the Junior COLA. All notes and payments have been received. We are lookingforward to another great rehearsal. Alice Wigny & Erin AtkinsSOUTHERN ILLAWARRA MUSIC FESTIVAL Students and families are reminded that our performance date forthe Music Festival is Wednesday, 14 th August, at the Shellharbour Club. Tickets are on sale at the Office, $15.00 - only 2tickets per child, but there may be extras available. The Choir will be traveling by bus during the day for the rehearsal, butthe cost of the bus is being covered by the Music Festival. Students will need to return the permission note to the office.Don’t forget Choir members need to check that they have a shower cap available for the performance, preferably one withsome bright colours / spots/ stripes etc!OAK FLATS COMMUNITY CHOIR: Our Choir will resume meeting in <strong>Term</strong> 3 on every 2 nd Tuesday evening,7–8pm in the hall. The dates for this term will be 30 th July, 13 th & 27 th August and 10 th September. Newcomers mostwelcome – just come along if you enjoy singing together with others!P&C NEWS: Welcome back and lets look forward to another great term. Our Fete will be held on Friday the 20th September which is thelast day of term 3. Lots of information will be available through the newsletter each week. If you have any treasures you would like todonate, you can do so through the canteen any morning. We are also looking for preloved teddies. Any parent wishing to have a stall cancontact Kelley or send us an email ofpspc@gmail.com.The <strong>Oak</strong> <strong>Flats</strong> Lions Club Billycart Derby will be held on Sunday the 27th October from 8am along Central Avenue. Information about the daywill be in next weeks newsletter including registration and build day info, so keep an eye out! The Billycart committee are looking forvolunteers to help on the day. There is an information session for volunteers on Sunday the 21st of July at <strong>Oak</strong> <strong>Flats</strong> Bowling Club starting at7pm. Please come along if you can help on the day, we will be making a roster in 1-2 hour shifts. Any time you could give would be greatlyappreciated. If you can get to the info session or can’t make it but can help on the day please email us at ofpspc@gmail.com . On the agenda: Recycling and parents skills register.CANTEEN NEWS: We have a new face in the canteen, Anne will be taking on the roll of Canteen Supervisor. Please make her welcomeand come and say Hi ! The canteen committee would like to thank Janette for her work in the canteen for terms 1&2.Our volunteer information session will be held on Tuesday the 23rd of July, in the hall at 2.15pm. All volunteers should have received aninvite, if not come and see us in the canteen. Anyone wishing to help in the canteen in the future are also invited along.
