Winter 2008 • Vol. 90, No. 3The Messenger is published three times a year by Phoebe Ministries • 1-800-453-8814 • www.phoebe.orgIt is the employees who go the extra mile, the volunteers who work for no pay, thedonors who give from the heart and theresidents who bring their own vibrancy andwisdom to bear on our communities, thatmake The Phoebe Difference.Historically, the United Church ofChrist has played an integral rolein bringing staff, volunteers, donors and residents toPhoebe. And while ourorganization has becomemuch more diverse overtime, the people of theUCC continue to play avery important part inour mission and ministry. This relationshipcan be seen in how UCCmembers welcomePhoebe’s services and inthe way members themselveshelp to meet the needsof seniors in our care.Wheelchair MinistryFor the past four years, St. John’s UCC inRichlandtown has conducted a wheelchairministry with Phoebe Richland. Each Sundayduring warmer months a member of thecongregation walks a resident to the church, just minutes away. St. John’s is handicapaccessible and residents enjoy being welcomedas special guests and escorted to apew that accommodates wheelchairs.Dorothy Ewer, a member of St. John’s,created and manages the WheelchairMinistry, overseeing volunteer recruitmentand training. When the church began theprogram they felt it would be an opportunityto bring the greater community into thechurch community. Ewer says she and othervolunteers love the interaction with residents.“I think it is a special way for residentsANNUAL REPORT ISSUEUCC Churches Make the Differenceto enjoy the sunshine and flowers,” she adds.Closed Circuit Services“St. John’s Hain’s church is very involvedwith Phoebe Berks Health Care Center’sactivity department,” says Erin Garcia,Director of ActivitiesandA dove release ceremony takes place in October on the newAllen patio at Phoebe Home. Outdoor furniture was donatedby Jordan UCC.Volunteers.A church volunteerdelivers tapings ofthe Sunday service to Phoebe Berks so theycan be shown to residents over the closedcircuit Phoebe TV system. A group calledHains’ Pals, made up of younger teenagers, visits the Center each month to lead Bingo, games and other activities. A long history ofsignificant giving is also part of the connectionthis church has fostered with Phoebethrough its outreach efforts.Part of Something LargerAt Wyncote Church Home, members ofGlenside UCC regularly lead and participatein resident activities. Lori DiFiglia, VolunteerCoordinator, thinks community programsremind residents they are still part of somethinglarger. She continues, “It is also goodfor them to see newfaces.”The relationshipbetweenGlenside andWyncote has continuedmore than40 years. Eachmonth the churchruns a Bingogroup at Wyncoteand supplies theprizes. Other programsorganizedby Glenside rangefrom knitting, to “cozy corner” game day, tochoir presentations. Wyncote resident EdithFoley enjoys taking part because the programshelp her stay active. Volunteers alsoremember residents throughout the yearwith hand-made birthday cards.A Laugh Every DayAlyce Tokus, a member of Jordan UCC inAllentown, has volunteered at Phoebe Homefor 17 years. She says she and many othermembers of her church “give our time toPhoebe because it is a pleasant atmospherewhere we can help others.” Tokus, who volunteersfive days a week doing office work, says she truly looks forward to it becauseshe is “guaranteed a laugh every day.”This special connection allows thechurch to become aware of programs andneeds at our health care center. Last summer,a new outdoor living space (the site ofphotos seen on this page) was created atPhoebe Home . The patio provides residentsand their families with beautiful activity, social and meditation areas. Several woodentable and chair sets with large, shadyumbrellas were added, made possible by agenerous gift from the Festival Committeeof Jordan UCC. ■

2 The Messenger/Annual Report IssueThanks for Making the DifferenceIt is my great pleasure to open thisannual report with a thank you to allthose who have contributed toPhoebe’s mission and ministry. It is true.People Make the Phoebe Difference!Scott R. StevensonPhoebe is blessed: By strength ofPresident & CEOmission and purpose, which transcendsPhoebe Ministriesthe challenges of our times; by dedicatedstaff, who go above and beyond to meet our residents’ needs;and by the hundreds of volunteers and donors who give selflesslyof their time and treasure to make a difference in the lives ofthe people who depend on us.I too am blessed, blessed to be a part of the Phoebe team.Having held positions in both acute and long term care, I havespent most of my career serving faith-based, not-for-profitorganizations. Phoebe stands out above all the rest for the passionand commitment to excellence that is woven into its fabric.I believe I was guided to Phoebe, and I am glad to have thisopportunity to live out my faith by helping the organizationgrow its mission and ministry.Having completed my first 120 days in this new role, I amalso pleased to share an update on Phoebe’s plans and prospectsfor the near future. Phoebe’s mission is “serving the needs of ouraging population.” To me this means providing the highest qualityof care and the best possible quality of life for the seniors whoare a part of the Phoebe family. I believe we are already doing avery good job at this, and will work side by side with our leadershipteam and caregiving staff to achieve excellence in meetingthe challenges of the future.Financial Strength, Investments in CareI am very happy to report that at the close of fiscal 2008Phoebe’s financial strength was at an all-time high. Seven yearsago, we laid out a strategic plan for operational improvements, customer focus, staff development, institutional advancementand financial strength. The resulting effort has been successful, and with it, Phoebe’s ability to invest in people and programs hasgrown.Phoebe’s commitment to charitable care and benevolencehas reached an all-time high, with $20 million provided over thelast three years. In the past year alone, this charitable careincluded close to $1 million to support residents in Phoebe’sassisted living and limited income communities. In assisted living, government support to help with the cost of care is availableto only a few qualified groups. Another significant part of ourministry is providing safe and secure homes for older adultswith limited incomes.Last year, Phoebe also expanded its pastoral care program, with Rev. JoEllen Mauger as full-time chaplain at WyncoteChurch Home and Naomi Kolb Dublanica as part-time, assistantchaplain at Phoebe Berks. Phoebe’s pastoral care commitmentincludes funding six full-time and one part-time staff member, and its certified Clinical Pastoral Education program, offeredtwice each calendar year.We are investing in our staff by partnering with educationalinstitutions like Penn State University, and by providing scholarshipsand learning opportunities to help them climb the careerladder. We are furthering resident-centered care through culturechange education for all employees. Our strength has also allowed us to reinvest in Phoebe’sDepreciation andAmortization 5%OtherExpenses 7%Operating Expenses$87,910,000Interest3%Utilities 3%Insurance 1%Assisted Living 5%Pharmacy 9%Operating Revenue$97,580,000Investment Earnings 6%Contributions 1%Other 1%ResidentSupplies 9%Employee Wagesand Benefits56%Skilled Nursing67%ContractedServices 16%Independent Living11%FISCAL 2008 FINANCIAL SNAPSHOT ■ FISCAL 2008 FINANCIAL SNAPSHOT ■ FISCAL 2008

The Messenger/Annual Report Issue 3infrastructure. Our capital spending for routine equipmentreplacement and building upgrades has grownto nearly $6 million per year; that level was $1 millionnot long ago. Specifically, we have repositioned ourPhoebe Richland campus by establishing a short-termrehabilitation unit and completing a significantcosmetic upgrade to the entire community. We areevaluating ways to use 30 acres of adjoining propertyto further our ministry at this location. We are under way with a significant repositioningon our Phoebe Berks campus. A $36.8 million bondfundedproject consisting of 29 cottages, 14 apartmentsand a building to house a new memory support andadult day services program, will be built; skilled nursingand assisted living neighborhoods will be significantlyrenovated, and a short-term rehabilitation unit will becreated. This fall, we will also be launching a significantremodeling of Wyncote Church Home. This effort willinclude a new short-term rehabilitation unit and significantcosmetic upgrades. Wyncote received its certificationto provide Medicare rehabilitation in September,an important step in our long-term plan for thatcommunity. In keeping with our promise to the formerWyncote Church Home Board of Managers, we are alsoevaluating options for the development of a new continuingcare retirement community in MontgomeryCounty. Current economic conditions may delay development, but the search for land is under way.Last, but certainly not least, we are anticipatingthe final report from Larson Allen and Noelker Hull, consultants and architects we have hired to help usevaluate our strategy for our Allentown campus. Weface the challenge of an aging infrastructure, the realityof limited space for expansion, and the shifting tidesof reimbursement. What I can tell you it this: Phoebe’smission and ministry will continue at our flagshiplocation, and over the course of the next few years, wewill be making a significant investment there as werespond to the needs of our aging population in theLehigh Valley.Challenges for the FutureIt is a blessing to be at Phoebe and to share thisgood news with you. But, Phoebe also faces significantchallenges in the foreseeable future.Phoebe continues to rely heavily on governmentalreimbursement. We face significant shortfalls inMedicaid funding for the more than 50% of people inour care who are without funds. While our emphasison short-term rehabilitation funded through Medicareis helping to balance our budget, we are at the mercy ofa government facing an economic crisis of its own. Also, the costs of doing business are escalatingaround us. In the coming year, we will be forced to competefor qualified specialists for therapy, pharmacy andnursing and to meet the rising costs of utilities andother expenses, to name just a few of our challenges.Phoebe’s ability to continue to invest in missionand ministry, as we have this past year, requires yourcontinued investment in us. We are extraordinarilygrateful for the depth of generosity and commitmentshown by our organization’s friends and family. Again, allow me to extend my thanks. I pledge my personaldedication to furthering Phoebe’s ministries, so thatwe can go on serving the needs of our aging populationwell into the future. ■Phoebe’s commitment tocharitable care and benevolencehas reached an all-time high, with $20 million provided overthe last three years.Contributions & Trust Income$3,577,584Estates $973,027Auxiliaries & Other $35,010Individuals$1,663,671Trusts $321,434This chart includes cash and other gifts received foroperations, capital and endowments.Foundations $282,875Churches $163,299Businesses $138,268FINANCIAL SNAPSHOT ■ FISCAL 2008 FINANCIAL SNAPSHOT ■ FISCAL 20

The Messenger/Annual Report Issue 11Miller Resident Linked to Phoebe’s HistoryThe Griesemer family has longbeen associated with Phoebe. Some of the earliest accounts ofthe organization begin in 1904 withthe $9,000 purchase of the Griesemerhomestead, a three-story brick farmhouseon three acres of land in WestAllentown. This simple abode was the firstbuilding to house the Phoebe Deaconessand Old Folks Home. It continued to bethe primary residence for the “agedpoor” Phoebe served and the youngwomen who cared for them, until 1911,when the Dormitory (today’s HaasBuilding) was erected.GriesemersvilleNaomi Griesemer, a resident ofThe David A. Miller Personal CareCommunity at Phoebe Home, knowsthis history well, since her husband’sgreat uncle was David Griesemer, theman who owned the historic homesteaduntil his death in 1903.“This whole area was known asGriesemersville,” she recalls, referringto the top of the 19th Street Hill, downto Cedar Beach and up the hill on theother side of Hamilton Street. TheGreisemer family also owned GreenwoodCemetery, where many early residentsof Phoebe Home were buried.Griesemer’s husband, Orrien, wasthe grandson of Alfred, who owned aunique enterprise called the “DuckFarm Hotel” in what is now the CedarBeach area, just a short walk from thePhoebe campus. Visitors would takethe trolley from center city, select theduck they wanted to eat later that day, then enjoy games in the parklikesetting until their meal wasprepared.Phoebe AuxiliaryHer mother-in-law, Ida, wasvery active in the early PhoebeAuxiliary, and Griesemer herselfwould help prepare fruiteach year for the Auxiliary’sPhoebe Festival, along withthe Greenawald’s UCCWomen’s Guild. Still willing todo her part, Griesemer’scooking group in the MillerBuilding recently madeupside down cakes usingfresh peaches for theAuxiliary’s Peach Festival. When Griesemer wasready to sell the home sheand Orrien built inGreenawalds 60 years ago, and moveto a personal care community, herhusband’s family history and her longtimeaffiliation with the UCC had a lotto do with her decision to choosePhoebe. “Orrien would be very pleasedto know that I am being taken care ofhere,” she muses.Phoebe’s David A. Miller PersonalCare Community turned out to be agood fit for Griesemer, who is stillactive. “I made up my mind I wasn’tgoing to sit there. They have so manyactivities to choose from,” she says. Some of the things that keep her busyinclude band concerts, bingo, apinochle group that meets regularlyand caring for the potted plants onthe 1st Floor balcony. Residents comeNaomi Griesemersits by the flowers she tends on the balcony ofthe David A. Miller Personal Care Community, where she resides. In her hands is a photo ofthe Griesemer farmhouse, home to a memberof her husband’s family and sold to Phoebe in1904. The building housed Phoebe’s first residentsand deaconesses.from all over the building to enjoytheir beauty.Ruth Search, Griesemer’s daughter, commented, “It has truly been ablessing to have her here. There arepeople her age and so many things forher to do.” The location is also convenientfor the family to visit many timesa week, although sometimes all theyfind when they arrive is a note on herbed that says, “I’m here! I’ll be backsoon…” ■Mr. & Mrs. Michael W. WanishMr. David L. WardMrs. Dorothy WardMr. & Mrs. Roger WardlowMr. & Mrs. Donald C. WassumMr. & Mrs. Raymond E. WavrekMr. & Mrs. Daniel R. Dr. Allan Kramer-Moyer, Vice President of Pastoral Care, and Phoebe’sfive full-time chaplains, Revs. Albert Martin and Corrine Dautrich, Phoebe Home;Rev. Dr. John Fureman, Phoebe Berks; Rev. Dorothy Shelly, Phoebe Richland;and Rev. Jo Ellen Mauger; Wyncote Church Home, answer questions about whatQit is like to provide services to residents, family, staff and volunteers at all of ourPhoebe communities.Q: What do you think our readers should know about the pastoralcare program at Phoebe? How is it different?A: Rev. Kramer-Moyer – There aren’t many hospitals that have as manyboard certified chaplains as we do at Phoebe. Five of our six ordained chaplainsare board certified.Rev. Dautrich – I think we as chaplains are very mindful of maintainingpastoral care traditions. It’s one of the gifts of Phoebe Ministries.Depending on what a resident’s faith traditions are, we can provide individualizedpastoral care. Whenever possible, we work closely with residents’regular pastors to help them deal with their parishioner’s issues.Rev. Fureman – I’d want readers to know how absolutely essential pastoralcare is as part of a holistic approach to long-term care.Rev. Shelly – We are not here just for the residents. We serve residents’families, the staff, volunteers and the home church pastors. How manyother places of employment can say they have a chaplain on staff, in part, for the staff?Rev. Kramer-Moyer – I think our presence in the clinical setting helpsthe staff realize how important outside clergy are to the resident’s care.We are partners in ministry with the pastors of residents’ home churches.Q: How has our pastoral care program changed since you startedworking at Phoebe?A: Rev. Kramer-Moyer – Having two chaplains on the Allentown campusgives us a lot more opportunity to provide programs and services. Wealso supplement the program with four volunteer chaplains and eightfield education students.Rev. Dautrich – The faith traditions of our residents are much morediverse than they once were. We’ve also changed from having large groupprograms to smaller, neighborhood-based programs, with the movetowards resident-centered care.Rev. Martin – There are more community activities now between residents. Some of the best ministry is done when residents minister to eachother in prayer groups and Bible study. Also, the population of our skilled nursing communities has movedmore towards short-term rehab.Rev. Shelly – And that means there is more of a turnover. It requiresmeeting our rehab residents wherever we can, whenever we can, so as notto interfere with their therapy schedule. They need pastoral care as muchas our long-term care folks.Continued, next page

We deal with the questions ofultimate meaning in these resident’s livesand in all our lives.Q: What are the rewards and challengesof being a chaplain in a long-termcare community?A: Rev. Fureman – The rewards definitelyoutweigh the challenges. I get atremendous feeling of gratitude workingwith our residents. These people aregoing through significant changes in theirlives. We are really walking on sacredground to follow people on this journey. The down side is eventually losingthem. But at the same time we realize thisis part of the circle of life, and for atime we get to walk with them.Rev. Martin – The rewardscome from the deep personal relationshipsthat you are allowed toform, and the stories you hear fromthe residents of their struggles andpassions.Rev. Mauger – Our residents arefacing a lot of changes and discoveringthat they aren’t able to do allthe things they used to. It’s rewardingto be with them when theycome to realize the things they canstill do are valuable.Rev. Dautrich – My greatestreward is playing a part in significantmoments in people’s lives. One of myfavorite duties is leading the memorialservice we hold each month to honor theresidents who have died. It is usually thefirst time a family returns to Phoebe afterlosing their loved one, and it is very healingfor them. It allows for grieving andgives them a time to share remembrances.Knowing and loving residents whopass is both a blessing and a challenge. Originally called “The HomesLuncheon,” the event traditionally featuredfresh, in-season foods from local farms andhomemade bread and baked goods.Mary Schueck, one of the originalorganizers, stressed that no canned foodsbe served. “We wanted it to be a specialmeal, to reach out to the residents of ourown church homes,” she remembers.More recently, residents of PhoebeRichland and church members 70 and olderwere also invited to attend the meal andprogram. Schueck made the bread againthis year, but passed the job of organizingthe event to fellow parishioner Bev Farkas, who cooks each month for more than 100people in the church’s singles group. “I guessthey figured I could do the job!” she says. The event was sponsored by NewGoshenhoppen’s Health and Welfare andEldercare committees. Members of thecommittees made nametags, baked cakes, served as greeters, and picked up anyguests who could not drive. “So many peoplecame out to help,” says Farkas. “It wouldbe a big job if we didn’t have the volunteers.”Audrey Graver, Phoebe Home VolunteerCoordinator, accompanied residents to theevent. “They put out quite a spread!” shesaid. Thissummer, several departments collaborated to createthe Dream Maker Program, whose goal is to enhancethe lives of long-term care residents. Many elderly people experience a great sense ofloss before moving to a skilled nursing facility. Often, they have lost loved ones and given up their homesand independence. Adjusting to a new communitycan be difficult, leading to depressionand a struggle to find meaning in life. The Dream Maker Program addressesthese challenges and helps residents findnew inspiration and hope. Michelle Schery-Simpson, Director of Social Services and aDream Maker organizer, says, “The programcan bring a sense of attainment byaddressing a previous goal that was neverreached. It also enhances life in the presentand reminds residents they still have a networkof friends and support.”The first wish that was granted took Frank Craigand his daughter and son-in-law to an Iron Pigs baseballgame in Allentown. Craig grew up playing baseball, often as pitcher, and he has been a fan ofPhiladelphia baseball since the Phillies were knownas the Athletics. He was nominated for the DreamMaker Program by Rev. It is anotherway of allowing their stories to happen, and theirdreams to become reality.”Craig’s daughter, Denise Simone, thought Allentown’sCoca-Cola Park was perfect because the sizeof the stadium made it easy to follow the game. But few take actionlike Arlan Dohrenburg, who has honored his mother’smemory with monthly gifts to Phoebe Home for morethan 38 years.Ella Dohrenburg, a native of Hamburg, Pa.,moved to Phoebe Home in 1970 when her declininghealth made it too difficult for her to remain in her ownhome. Her son, Arlan, who lived and worked out ofstate, was deeply concerned about his mother’s wellbeing. He visited her whenever his schedule permittedand checked in regularly with her caregivers. His concerns were quickly put to rest. He was pleased with his mother’s care, and Ella lived comfortably at Phoebe Home until her death in 1980. During those10 years, Dohrenburg’s knowledge of the organization grew. He learned firsthandabout Phoebe’s quality care. He also gained an understanding of Phoebe’s promiseto those who need care, but have exhausted their own financial resources. In appreciation, Dohrenburg made a decision to support Phoebe Home on anongoing basis. He began sending monthly charitable gifts in 1970 and continues tothis day. In a recent conversation, he told us, “I felt it was important to make givingto Phoebe part of my monthly budget. It’s a wonderful way to honor my motherand express my gratitude to Phoebe.”Dohrenburg only allowed us to share his story because he hoped it mightinspire others to consider monthly giving. When told how much he had contributedto date, he was a bit surprised. He hadn’t realized the long-term impact of histhoughtfulness. What’s more, his philanthropic support of Phoebe over the yearshas touched countless lives. We trust Ella Dohrenburg would be very pleased to know that she is rememberedin this way. ■Mr. Alexander W. Foreight years, the former dairyfarmer has biked 14 milesround-trip to his job at PhoebeBerks Health Care Center.According to him, working as adish washer for CuraHospitality is more than justdoing dishes. It’s a way to stayfit and healthy, or as he says, “Itkeeps you 75 years young.”Sittler was raised on thecorner of Oley Park Road withhis four sisters. His father, who was a dairyfarmer, inspired himto become one, too.As a young man, Sittlerdreamed of buying a farm ofhis own in Oley, even one inneed of “TLC.” In 1964, he got hischance and purchased theMorning Mistdairy farm for$30,000. The fixerupperincluded129 acres, 100 cows,a grain truck anda full line ofmachinery. “Itwas a great placeto raise my fivechildren,” he says. After 30 yearsof farming, Sittlerretired, but he hasnever sloweddown. “I lovespendingBob Sittlertime with my ninegrandchildren, and biking is mypassion andprimary transportation,”saysSittler, who bikesup to 40 miles to getwhere he needs to go.Although he owns acar, he prefers to bike becauseit gives him something to do.“Plus, it’s good for you,” he adds.People Make the Differenceat PHOEBE BERKS■■■■■Volunteer program grows for residents in healthcare and assisted living.Expanded therapy department and new fitnesscoordinator bring expertise and motivation.CURA Hospitality staff receive high marks onquality, safety and satisfaction with food service.Chaplains reach out with educational programs, life review workshops and grief support groups.Donors to the Embracing Life Campaign givemore than $1.1 million to expand programs formemory support and short-term rehab.“When I retired from farming,I worked for a temporaryagency that found various jobsfor me. I drove tractor trailersand worked other odd jobs. So,I didn’t ‘officially’ retire until Iwas 67,” says Sittler. When the temporaryagency assigned Sittler to CuraHospitality, a food service managementcompany that specializesin senior living and acutecare, Sittler biked seven milesto Phoebe Berks to be interviewedand quickly was hiredfull-time.“I never thought I wouldhave a job like this, but pushingthe dishes keeps me in goodshape,” says Sittler, who bikesto work at 6:00 a.m., three orfour days a week. “They treatme well, and it’s work that I cando. I’m a mover, so this is agreat job for me.”According to Cura’s presidentand founder, MitchPossinger, hiring senior citizensis good business. “Seniorsunderstand the meaning ofgood work. A job gives themsomething productive to doand makes them feel needed.Plus, seniors know how tomeet, serve and be nice to others, whether they be residents, family members, clients or fellowworkers. Those are importanttraits to possess in thehospitality industry.”Sittler certainly meets thecriteria. When needed, he willinglylends a hand in personalcare, serving meals and pouringcoffee.“Since I’m older, I fit right inwith the residents,” Sittlerexplains. “There are many prettyladies, so I hold the dooropen for them, joke around andenjoy speaking PennsylvaniaDutch with them.
