Schoolpersonnel have been assigned to supervise these areas.School begins at 8:05 a.m. <strong>Student</strong>s who arrive after8:05 a.m. must come to the Main Office accompaniedby the person who brought them to school. Schooldismisses at 3:05 p.m. each day.• Refer to page 8 for the Tardy/Attendance PolicyWRITTEN EXCUSESIn accordance with state law, a parent or guardian mustexplain the cause of every absence of a student underhis/her control or charge. Every student, upon his/herreturn to school, must bring a written excuse from homesigned by the student’s parent/guardian for each absenceand present it to his/her homeroom teacher.Attention students and parents! It is extremelyimportant that the homeroom teacher promptlyreceives a written excuse for absences that areexcusable! Failure to bring in a written excuse willresult in the absence being labeled unexcused. Thehomeroom teacher retains all written excuses for theremainder of the school year.ABSENCES AND EXCUSESAll student absences will be designated as either excusedor unexcused. A student will be excused for his/herabsence from school for the following reasons:1. Illness2. Inclement weather which would be dangerous tothe life or health of the student if he/she attendedschool.3. Legal quarantine4. Death in the immediate family5. Emergency conditions as determined by thesuperintendent or the principal6. Planned absences provided that a written request isSubmitted by the parent/guardian to the principal atleast three days prior to the date of the absence. Preexcusedabsences may be denied to students whohave excessive absences.UNEXCUSED ABSENCESAbsence for reasons other than those defined above will beunexcused. “Personal” is unexcused.MAKE-UP WORK: EXCUSED ABSENCES<strong>Student</strong>s who have excused absences will be allowed tomake up work missed in each class. All make-up workmust be completed within the allotted time, two days persick day. Working within the parameters of the Boardpolicy, each teacher will determine the make-up policy fortests. <strong>Student</strong>s must be aware of their teachers’ policies.Barring extenuating circumstances, long-rangeassignments are due on schedule. Grades may bewithheld if make-up work is not completed. It is thestudent’s responsibility to obtain all make-up work fromhis/her teacher upon returning to school. Failure to obtainmake-up work is no excuse for not doing work missed.For planned absences, the student is responsible forobtaining assignments prior to the absence and thework is due on the date the student returns to school.Special circumstances will be considered on an individualbasis.If a student is absent for one or two days, assignmentsshould be obtained as follows: from another student, byaccessing the Pizitz Homework Page on the Internet(http://www.vestavia.k12.al.us/pizitz/), the teacher’swebpage, or, upon returning to school, from the teachers.Assignments remain on the Internet Homework Page forfive days. Updates are finalized after 3:05 p.m. each7


school day. Special circumstances regarding make-upwork will be considered on an individual basis.MAKE-UP WORK: UNEXCUSED ABSENCESTeachers will not be required to provide make-up work ortests for students who are absent for unexcused reasons orwho have an absence labeled as unexcused due to failure tobring in a written note.TARDINESSTardiness is a part of attendance. Any student arriving oncampus after 8:05 a.m. is tardy and must be “checked in”by a parent/guardian or the parent/guardian designee.Tardies due to illness, doctor or dentist appointments,traffic or car problems, and emergencies are excused. Allother tardies are unexcused, including those due tooversleeping, personal reasons, and finishinghomework. <strong>Student</strong>s are to be at school and in class ontime. <strong>Student</strong>s are considered tardy if they are not in theclassroom when the tardy bell rings. Four unexcusedtardies may result in morning detention and a D-Slip.CHECKING OUT/IN DURING SCHOOL HOURSWhen checking IN to school (8:05 a.m. or after), theperson bringing the student MUST come into the officeand sign in the student. Late students who come inwithout the person who brought them will receive a“Tardy Ticket.” Four tickets may result in morningdetention and a D-Slip.When checking OUT of school, the parent/guardian orparent/guardian designee must come into the office andrequest that the student be checked out. Either a parent/guardian or parent/guardian designee whose name is on filemust sign the student out. If someone other than theparent/guardian is to pick up a student, we must have apermission note signed by the parent/guardian. Thereshould be no checking out for purposes other thanillness, doctor/dentist appointments, or emergencies.“Personal” is unexcused.PIZITZ MIDDLE SCHOOL TARDY/ATTENDANCEPROCEDURE*TARDIESNumber Procedure5 Principal will contact the parent10 Attendance Officer notified for furtheraction, which may include referral to FamilyCourt Early Warning Program*UNEXCUSED ABSENCES (ALL Grade Levels)Number Procedure1 The Principal or his/her designee will notify theparent/guardian by phone that the student wastruant and date of the truancy. Parent/guardianshall also be provided a copy of Alabama’scompulsory school attendance laws and advised8of the penalties that can be applied and theprocedures that shall be followed in the eventthat other unexcused absences occur.5 The parent, guardian, or other person havingcontrol of the child shall attend a conferencewith the attendance officer and Principal orhis/her designee and/or participate in the earlywarning program provided by juvenile court.Attendance at one of these conferences shall bemandatory except, where prior arrangements havebeen made or an emergency exists. Failure toappear at the school conference and/or to appear atthe early warning program shall result in the filingof a complaint/petition against the parent underCode of Alabama (1975), 16-28-12(c) (failure tocooperate), or a truancy against the child,whichever is appropriate.7 The Attendance Officer will file a complaint/petition against the child and/or guardian, ifappropriate.*EXCUSED ABSENCES (Grades K—8)Number Procedure10 Parent conference with the Principal requesting avalid Doctor’s excuse for future absence.15 The Attendance Officer will verify Doctor’s excusewith the Doctor. Parents will be notified if furtheraction is granted.SECTION IIDress CodeThe primary guide in determining what is not appropriateis the extent to which such dress or grooming attractsundue attention in the classroom or school. Below is thedress code for students at Pizitz Middle School duringschool hours and at school activities. All teachers areexpected to help in enforcing this code consistently andfairly. <strong>Student</strong>s who violate the dress code repeatedly or ina disruptive flagrant manner shall be sent to the principal.Appropriateness of attire is decided by administration.DRESS CODE REGULATIONS FOR PIZITZMIDDLE SCHOOLIf a student fails to adhere to regulations in the followinglist, he/she is in violation of the dress code. Theadministration reserves the right to deem any item asinappropriate. This list is not conclusive nor is aviolation of the dress code limited to the following:1. Boys’ shirttails must be tucked in.2. <strong>Student</strong>s must wear clothing in the manner it wasdesigned to be worn. (suspenders must be fastened, pantsmust be worn at the waist, etc.)


ACADEMIC SUPPORTThe Academic Support Program provides students with anopportunity to develop a positive self-image whileaccommodating individual learning rates and styles oflearning. Academic support meets before or after schoolby special arrangement, during homeroom, or during class.<strong>Student</strong>s may receive academic support by asking theirclassroom teacher or by checking with the AcademicSupport teachers. A gifted referral screening committee reviewseach referral and decides whether to accept the referral andarranges further assessments if needed. Pizitz MiddleSchool follows the eligibility criteria set forth by theAlabama State Department of Education. <strong>Student</strong>s whoqualify for gifted educational services, according to stateguidelines, will receive specialized services as written intheir Gifted Educational Plan (GEP). For information on this programcontact David Miles at 402-5350 ormilesdw@vestavia.k12.al.us.CHILD FIND PROGRAMIn accordance with the federal special education law theIndividuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the<strong>Vestavia</strong> <strong>Hills</strong> <strong>City</strong> School system must develop andimplement procedures that ensure that all children withintheir jurisdiction, ages birth to twenty-one, regardless ofthe severity of their disability, and who need special14education and related services are identified and locatedand evaluated. Child Find also applies to children withdisabilities who attend private schools, including childrenattending religious schools, within the local educationagency’s jurisdiction, highly mobile children withdisabilities (e.g., migrant children), homeless children, orchildren who are wards of the State and children who aresuspected of having a disability and are in need of specialeducation, even though they have not failed, been retainedin a course or grade or are advancing from grade to grade.For more information, please contact Linda L. Involvement in thesegroups helps to promote school spirit and pride. Pizitzuniforms are not to be worn to class. Permission maybe granted on special occasions.TEAM AND GROUP ACTIVITIESAccording to state regulations, students entering gradeseight and nine must, for the last two semesters ofattendance and summer school, if applicable, have apassing grade in five (5) subjects with a compositenumerical average of 70 with all other rules applying thesame as to students in grades 9-12. Activities offered bythe school through math, science, band, choral, and othercourses at events such as athletic events, club conventions,etc., are extracurricular (co-curricular), and studentsacademically ineligible under this policy shall not beallowed to participate. A student entering grades eight andnine are eligible for activities based on grades from thepreceding academic year, including summer school.ALL STUDENTS entering grade seven for the first timeare eligible for all activities. According to the AlabamaHigh School Athletic Association, students who areentering the sixth grade are ineligible to participate instate-sponsored extracurricular activities. Opportunitiesfor these students to participate in athletic activities areoffered through <strong>Vestavia</strong> <strong>Hills</strong> Park and Recreation whichcan be contacted at 978-0176.Certain other groups including, but not limited to, <strong>Student</strong>Council, Pirate Girls, Dance Team, Majorettes, andCheerleaders require members to maintain a 70 percentaverage in each subject to remain eligible to participate.Specific requirements are detailed in each organization’sconstitution. CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIESYearbook StaffPiriviaWho: 7 th & 8 th GradersWhat: A group of 7 th and 8 th graders who create theyearbook for Pizitz students and staff. <strong>Student</strong>s learnpicture taking techniques, how to design layouts and insertpictures using an online computer program specificallydesigned for yearbooks, bookkeeping skills, and theimportance of keeping records.When: Tryouts are held in the spring for the next schoolyear. Two candidates are chosen fromeach homeroom (one boy and one girl) in each team. Eachteam then elects two nominees from to represent them onSGA. In the spring of your seventh grade year, you mayrun for the following SGA offices: President, Girls’ Vice-President, and Boys’ Vice-President. Sixth and seventhgraders may run for these offices: Chaplain,Parliamentarian, Treasurer, Historian, Sergeant at Arms,and Secretary. Campaigns last approximately one week.Posters, banners, and buttons will help you gain thesupport of fellow students.When: Homeroom representatives will be elected eachfall. School-wide elections for officers are held eachspring. Homeroom representatives meet once a month andofficers meet each Wednesday during homeroom.Requirements: Any interested student may run for officewith a composite average of 70% or higher in each subjectat the time of tryouts, with no less than an “S” in conduct,
