Since you guys have worked togetherand with Burton before, does that causeyou to have to push yourself to make sureyou’re not too relaxed?Catherine O’Hara: No, I don’t think youever go to work with Tim Burton too relaxed.I don’t mean that it’s not wonderful and fun. It’s just because he’s so great that you want tobe great for him. It’s really fun to work withhim. I don’t know why, but people think hemight be moody or broody or something, buthe’s very cool and loose.Q. How much does character designcome into play when you are coming upwith the voices in a movie like this?CO: So much. It’s everything. You alwayssee the illustrations first.Martin Short: Tim has an idea of how heimagines the characters, but he doesn’t knowthe specifics of it. So ... you might spend awhole session just trying different voices, different accents, different pitches. Then ifyou stumble on to something, he’ll say, “Ohthat!”CO: He’s as true to himself as you canpossibly be, and it’s rare to work with adirector who can be that true to himself allthe time. His original illustrations are themovie.Q. With the boon in online video overthe last few years, have you noticed anew wave of appreciation for your SCTVdays, now that so many people around theworld have access to it?MS: I’m not aware of that so much. InCanada, it’s certainly shown much moreoften. I think in general, the older you get, because there are so many outlets like cable,DVD, Blu-ray, you strangely become morerecognizable because you’re constantly inthe public consciousness by the nature ofwhat you’ve already done.CO: And maybe as you get older, the kidswho watched you are now at an age wherethey’ll talk to strangers.MS: Finally! Well, SCTV did always havesuch a strange connection with people thatthey like felt just they had discovered it, somaybe that created a greater passion.CO: It’s true. Only three people knewwhere to find it.For the full interview, visit www.toromagazine.comJohn Shearer / Associated PressWeeknights at 6channel 9 • ctstv.comENTERTAINMENT IN BRIEFSWEDEN TO OPEN MUSEUM SHOWCASING ABBASTOCKHOLM, Sweden — A travelling ABBA exhibit is to geta permanent home in a new museum dedicated mostly tothe Swedish quartet.Former band member Bjoern Ulvaeus said today that“ABBA The Museum” will be part of a Swedish music hallof fame to be inaugurated in Stockholm next spring. The museum will feature some of the band’s glitzy stagecostumes, instruments and other mementos.Ulvaeus said he hoped all four former ABBA memberswould attend the opening, but ruled out any chance of astage comeback, saying, “We are the only group of thatstatus that has never been reunited. Brad SmithBrad Smith, 29, is the first man chosen tobe The Bachelor in Canada. The CFL freeagent and native of Hudson, Que., sayshe’s ready for love and is looking for thewoman of his dreams. He’ll have 25 womento choose from as he starts his quest on theseries premiere tonight at 9 p.m. on Citytv.Smith talked to tonight about romance, true love and rom-coms.Q. Why did you decide tobecome The Bachelor?A. To be honest withyou, it was a life-meetsopportunitymoment. I wasin the right place at theright time to not only finda life partner, but also toexperience all the amazingopportunities that go alongwith being The Bachelor.Q. Are you a fan of the U.S.version of the show?A. Absolutely. I wasintroduced to it manyseasons ago by my bestfriend’s girlfriend and havewatched ever since.Q. Do you think you canfind true love on a realityshow?A. I think you can find truelove anywhere. The factthat cameras are aroundshouldn’t take away theopportunity to find truelove – the one personyou’re meant to be with.Q. Do you think youcan fall in love withmore than one person,as we have seen onThe Bachelor and TheBachelorette?A. Absolutely no chance. Tome, being in love with twopeople at the same timewould demean the natureof true love.Q. What is your version ofromance?A. For me, romance canbe found in everyday littlethings as opposed to grand,over-the-top gestures.Q. Who is your go-toperson for romanticadvice?A. I’ve never asked forromantic advice fromanyone. Romance meansdifferent things to differentpeople.Q. Is there a celebrityor historic couple youadmire?A. No two relationships arethe same. I think you haveto aspire to be the kind ofcouple that you want tobe. If you look to be likeother couples, then you’renot really exploring thetrue potential of your ownrelationship.Q. Apart from the show,do you remember aparticular date that youconsider to be the mostromantic?Any date that includeswatching a great movie, enjoying a glass of wine andeating Skittles. Romance issimple. I don’t think thatspending your inheritanceto make someone else feelspecial is romantic. Justbeing with them and doingeveryday things togetheris what makes it feelromantic.Q. What’s your favouriterom-com?A. Right now, it’s TheSwitch. In general, I love allrom-coms starring JenniferAniston.Q. Boxers or briefs?A. Manager Amy says that the popularityof Latte Mei overseas motivated herto open her own café here on Dundas.“This is something you couldn’t reallyfind in Toronto,” she says, referring to theshop’s signature savoury cream teas. While the café does offer other optionssuch as slushes, milk teas, smoothiesand more, Latte Mei’s savoury creamsare certainly front and centre, quite literally– they’re advertised on four hugebanners in the store).Amy explains that these drinks ($3.99-$4.49) are all about the mix of sweet andsalty. “This cream is not like a cream likeyou’ll find at other places in the city. It’ssavoury – not really sweet. It sort of hasa cheesy taste.”Customers can pick from one of avariety of teas imported from Taiwan asthe base, including green, wheat, brownrice and black tea. After specifying thesweetness, the drink is topped with thefresh cream and dusted with a sprinkle ofgreen tea powder.“You don’t drink it with a straw,” Amyexplains, adding that a sip from the rimensures a good balance of cream and tea.The optimal drinking time, she says, is anhour.I decide to try the savoury cream greentea, and despite Amy’s warning, I stillsort of expect more of a sweet whippedcream. But this cream is much thickerthan your average whipped cream, andsalty rather than sweet. A big sip yieldsa good balance with the cool, sweet tea,and certainly unlike most cream toppingsyou’ll find at conventional coffeeshops. But if you aren’t ready to take the savoury-teaplunge just yet, Latte Mei hasa full menu of other options, includingthe rosewater juice and basil seed combothat’s my personal favourite. The basilseeds become gelatinous in the drink, offeringa little bit of a bubble tea texturewithout having to swallow huge blobs oftapioca.Latte Mei also makes hot waffles toorder (with pearl sugar – the best part)and offers seating for about 10 peoplealong with free Wi-Fi. The café is opendaily during the week from 11 a.m. to 11p.m., and on weekends from 11 a.m. tomidnight.

He cited threereasons why “green shoots”are appearing in the S&P/TSX composite index.First, the benchmarkperformed a bullish goldencross yesterday. This occurswhen the 50-day movingaverage climbs above a rising200-day moving average.Second, this technicalindicator is supported by thelarge proportion of stocksmoving higher. Robergenoted that golden crossesled by such market breadthhave occurred just threetimes in the past decade. On average, the S&P/TSXcomposite rose 5.3% in thefollowing three months and9.7% in the next six months,Roberge told clients.Thirdly, the strategistpointed out that high-betastocks have just started toparticipate in the rally. He believes the indexis unlikely to hit a peakbefore the year-over-yearperformance gap betweenhigh and low-beta stocksclimbs much higher thanzero. That measure is still innegative territory.Roberge also upgradedhis weighting on Canadianbanks and life insurancecompanies to overweight, citing the forecastedconvergence in forwardvaluation multiples ofequity groups and stockswith similar dividend yields.“This arbitrage or renormalizationin riskappetite is made possiblebecause of the hyperreflationpolicies conductedby world central banks,” hesaid in a research report.Roberge noted thatCanadian lifecos and banksprovide dividend yields of5.1% and 4.3%, respectively, comparing to 4.8% fordefensive groups such asutilities, REITs, pipelinesand telecoms. AUTOWEDNESDAY NIGHT03.10.2012 P. 12Photos by Justin PritchardVOLVO XC60 R-DESIGNDialling up performance while maintaining refinementBy JUSTIN PRITCHARDThe standard Volvo XC60 is a long list of things– but aggressively sporty and exciting to look ataren’t on that list. The cool thing about exciting and sportyVolvos is that they’re awesome. And to the delightof fans of family-ready Swedish speed, theautomaker has recently offered a tuned-up XC60variant called the XC60 R-Design.As with other R-Design Volvo models, the diallingup is more substantial than a body kit, rimsand spoiler. Sure, you’ll notice that the R-Designis considerably more assertive-looking than thestandard model – thanks in no small part to agreat-looking set of alloy wheels, a two-tone colourscheme, various body upgrades and a sexyred paint job.But other important upgrades have been appliedas well.Stiffer springs and shocks work with thickerstabilizer bars for markedly reduced body roll, more direct responses to steering inputs anda more engaging experience when carving uptwisty roads. The big wheels help here, too. This isn’t asports car – but for its size and weight, XC60R-Design acts eager to please when pushed inthe backroads.Volvo’s creamy-smooth, three-litre straightsixturbo engine has been given a higher turbochargerboost limit and associated computermodifications for 25 extra horsepower. That’s325 in total.Heaps of low-end pull and quiet, refinedoperation overall make this a real sleeper, withperformance that will leave you satisfied. It haulsserious derriere, but XC60 R-Design prefers togently blast ahead on a wave of turbochargedtorque rather than scream and make a fuss. It’s aremarkable engine that never really feels like it’sworking hard, even at full throttle. The smooth-shifting, six-speed automaticbacks this up. Radar-guided cruise control, which automatically slows and accelerates basedon traffic conditions, should be fantastic on roadtrips, too.I love the extra performance, especially howit never displaces the comfortable, laid-back andrefined experience that are so much part of theXC60’s character. You can relax and socialize inhere with ease – but it’s that much more rewardingwhen you drive the pants off of it.Drivers are treated to a unique premiumcrossover cabin that doesn’t look or feel likeanything you’ll find in another brand.Extra points for the slick waterfall-inspiredcontrol console, potent stereo and front seats –which will likely be the most comfortable you’llvisit in the course of your day. The cabin is allvery richly sculpted, detailed and trimmed. Noissues to note with at-hand storage, entry, exit orcargo capacity. All Wheel Drive works to create fuss-free gripon any road or trail, and works with a powerfulanti-lock braking system to ensure traction ismaximized on any surface.Complaints? Aside from the sometimesharshride, I do wish for faster reaction to gearshift requests through the manual shift mode.Otherwise, XC60 is ergonomic, comfortable, safe, fast and striking to look at.Germany and Japan dominate this market segment– but the XC60 R-Design should help putSweden on the mental radar of premium crossovershoppers, too.The Canadian PressVOLVO XC60 R-DESIGNEngine: Three-litre inline six-cylinder,turbocharged, 325 horsepowerDrivetrain: All Wheel Drive with InstantTractionObserved Average Mileage: 12.5L / 100kmTransmission: Six-speed automaticFeatures: Bluetooth media streaming, CitySafety System, xenon lights, navigation, power tailgateWhat’s Hot: Slick drivetrain, plenty oftraction, great looks, smooth and refined, comfortable and uniqueWhat’s Not: Slow-to-react manual mode, ridequality diminishes on rougher roadsPrice as Tested (XC60 R-Design):$53,695
