LIFESTYLESPINCYCLE DIARIESTALYN-TERZIAN GILMOURAweek has gone by, and Istill can’t shake the blues... but at least it looks likewe’re actually going tobe on time today. Kids are dressedand fed, bags are packed for school, and just as we go outside to load everyoneup, disaster! There is rottenfood everywhere: I forgot to closethe garage door last night and raccoonsgot into my green bin!A quick cleanup later and I’mthinking the crisis has been averted, when up the driveway comes mycleaning lady – the one that keepsrearranging all of my stuff; the onethat keeps breaking things in myhouse; the one I’m putting off lettinggo because I’ve never fired anyonein my life. Oh, geez, we’re fine, thankyou for asking. I will pay you, forsure, I’m so, so sorry! See you nextweek. Thank you so much. Okay, bye.”Before you judge, part of the roofdid fall off last week, and tomorrowa roofer is going to come and put itback on, so … not a lie, just a stretch.I hop in the car with the restof the gang who have now (thankgoodness) offered me a ride to thesubway. Purse? Check. Spare bagwith shoes? Check. Latte? Checkitycheck check! Things are startingto go my way – I think I’m going toshake this funk after all – I mean, what a comedy of errors this morning, right? And I survived. This subway is disgusting; it iscrowded and hot. I hope I don’t almostfaint again. Focus: Perhaps Ishould turn off Zero Dark Thirty andjust stare at the ground – somehowtorture scenes seem too akin towhat I feel like I’m going throughright now. Hmmm, why don’t theyhave the A/C on? Ouch! What the –ouch! Some totally oblivious womanhas not only just stomped on myfoot with her big, high-tech sneakers, but when I turned to see whatwas going on, she clocked me withher giant backpack. And now there’sa medical emergency and I’m stuckhere? Funkity, funk, funk! It’s eight hours later…I did makeit to work, had a not-so-productiveday evaluating my life again andmanaged not to cover myself withmy lunch this time – so all in all, notbad. And now I’m at my son’s baseballgame (which I signed him up for as away to at least cross one more itemoff my list). We’ve been in our neighbourhoodfor close to five years andthis is a great way to get involved –and yes, this new-ish environmentwill be just as tricky for me as it willbe for him … I just wish I wasn’t insuch a funk.I look around. There’s a group ofwomen who seem like they’ve beenon this circuit for years: They havetheir folding chairs, their travelmugs and hunter boots (on this unseasonablycold and rainy Tuesdayevening I am wearing a thin T-shirtand Converse and am willing thesun to come out) and they appearmore interested in comparing notesover their latest acquisitions, recipesand social agendas. Iknow this because I got the onceoverwhen I was carrying our gearto “their territory” so I did a quick180 and changed course. But, oh no. I’ve now wound upwith the really nice and inclusivegroup. You know these people – theyare overly sweet and complimentary. They want to know every littledetail about you and where youcome from, seem oblivious to thefact that you only met five secondsago, and for some reason believethat you are just as interested in everydetail about their lives: “We’vebeen at this league forever! You’lllove it! We live right over there ... seemy house? What about you? Whatstreet? What number? My son, X,has been playing for the past twoyears but just look at him, he can’tfocus or listen – X! Pay attention tothe coach! – I swear that child is goingto be the end of me. You know,he won’t eat any vegetables! Whatdo I do? You must have some ideas?Which one is yours?” Oh boy.So now I’m sitting by the dugout.TUESDAY NIGHT16.07.2013 P. 07CONFESSIONS OF A MODERN-DAY RENAISSANCE WOMAN:FUNKY BLUES, PART 2This really is the best spot anyway– near all the kids and I can reallyget into the game. TRAVELFROMIN AWILD,WILD LANDIBy ANDREW EVANSWide and deep, the St/ Lawrence River’seastern stretch is a venue for whales- andthe kayakers who want to see them.ate the elk meat for lunch aftercooking it over an open fire I builtwith kindling on the stony shoresof the zigzagging Saguenay Fjord, here in eastern Quebec. The impromptu barbecue seemed like a veryQuebec thing to do, hut now Jimmy Deschenes iswarning me, in the rounded and peculiar Frenchdialect of the Saguenay, “Don’t let him stick his pawson you.”I nod to Deschenes, who at six feet tall and solidlybuilt looks the part of a Canadian frontiersman. Heis eyeing the wolf the way a matador sizes up a bull. Islowly kneel on the ground to face the lanky animal, which is taller than a German shepherd, with a longjaw and ears stretched to un-doglike proportions. In a second, he rushes toward me, his jaws openand aimed for my throat. Then he licks me. Jacob thewolf is lapping away every last bit of elk from myface, and I can’t help laughing.I’m eye-to-eye with a wild animal born in thewoods of Quebec, a predator designed by natureto hunt and kill elk – a predator that is licking mychin as if we’re at a dog park. But we’re not in a park;we’re at Deschenes’ 700-acre farm, a “family vacationcentre” that offers many recreational activities– and helps care for abandoned and injured wildlife. It’s the perfect place for me: Wildlife and wildernessare what lured me to Canada’s largest province inthe first place.Quebec sprawls across 595,000 square milesand extends more than 1,200 miles north to south(the distance from New York to Miami). This immensityencompasses swaths of forests. mountains, lakes and rivers that are home to one of the densestconcentrations of wildlife in North America. JimmyDeschenes is among a select group of professionalanimal workers with a permit to keep wildlife.Besides wolves, he works with moose, bison andraccoons, and keeps various farm animals.“We got Jacob when he was a pup,” he explains tome, “and trained him carefully so he would be usedto people.”“How does a farmer keep a lone wolf in captivity?”I ask, knowing that wolves are pack animals.“By forming my own pack,” Deschenes says.‘’Male wolves always submit to the dominant, oralpha, male in the pack, so I stuck my dog in the pento serve as the alpha. it worked. But as Jacob grows,he probably will become more dominant and lesspredictable. In other words, wilder.”Jacob will have plenty of company. Quebec’s wildwolf population is estimated at around 5,000 animals, thanks in part to an abundance of wildernessfor roaming – land I’m about to roam myself.

TUESDAY NIGHT16.07.2013 P. 13Weathered boats vital to life on the Magdalen Islands, take arespite after a busy summer season spent catching fish and lobster.Laid across my car’s steering wheel, my mapshows a green thumb of land jutting out towardthe Atlantic Ocean and France: Quebec’sGaspe Peninsula, the final northern hurrah of theAppalachian Mountains.I start the engine and drive northward fromTadoussac, measuring time by the shifting sunlighton the St. Lawrence River. The map designates thisarea as uninhabited, but I know this wilderness isalive with moose and caribou, cougars and lynx, badgers, black bears and minks. The towns become scarcer as I drive. When I askfor directions, I discover that the standard distancein Quebec is 2½ hours. It doesn’t matter where Istop or whom I ask; the response is universal.“A peu pres deux heures et demie,” says the old manin his small shop – “about 2½ hours: It’s the ballparkdistance from Tadoussac to the riverside town ofBaie-Comeau, where I’ll catch the ferry to the GaspePeninsula. The shopkeeper’s shelves display staplesof backwoods Quebec: fishing lures, hunting gear, bags of salty cheese curds, pints of wild blueberries. From Matane I head inland, toward the untamedcentre of the Gaspe Peninsula. As the road begins toclimb the Chic Chocs Mountains I note a sign markingthe Chic-Chocs Wildlife Reserve, which bordersthe Pare National de la Gaspesie. Folded green peaksglow with late-day sunlight, an evergreen panoramarippling against the blue-lavender twilight.I find the inn where I’m staying. I hear a faintgushing sound: Chute Helene, a waterfall that paintsa long white streak in the distance. I follow thetrail through woods and across the InternationalAppalachian Trail. I eye the pool at the fall’s base –and soon jump in. The water is bracingly cold anddeeply refreshing. I feel animal, alive, as ill belong inthis eastern Eden.“You missed it!’’ a fellow guest shouts to me,pointing in the direction of a moose she’d just scaredaway. Moose far outnumber humans in the ChicChocs, and I’ve been counting on seeing at least oneduring my three days here, but so far all I’ve seenare moose prints. She shows me the photo she took– a digital brown smudge running for the woods.Perhaps this will be my lucky day. I hike on. Moremoose prints, no moose. Another mile; Nothing. Ireluctantly head back.My three-day sojourn passes with no moosesightings, so I prepare to leave. Packing my bags, Iglance out the window for a farewell look at the ChicChocs, and there, like a dream, she is. My moose, asingle, muscled female, munching tree leaves not 20yards away. I step out on the balcony. She sees me.Once again I’m staring into the eyes of a wildanimal – I am so delighted I barely breathe. Then asmaller head emerges. A calf, only a few months old.I freeze still as a statue. It resumes stripping leavesfrom twigs. I’m entranced, until my eye catches anothermovement: A second calf’s head is pushingup near its mother’s massive body. A moose motherand her twins! After all my tracking effort, threemoose have tracked me down. Which reminds me ofthe fundamental rule when observing wildlife: Waitpatiently, and nature will come to you.I get another chance to apply this principle whenI visit Ile Bonaventure, a rocky islet just off the GaspePeninsula’s eastern shore. A high-walled castle ofstone jutting up from the constant splash of the sea,Ile Bonatenture is the realm of North America’s largestcolony of northern gannet seabirds. As I walk across the island, I smell and hear thembefore I see them – more than 100,000 screechinggannets, busy with their lives of fishing, nesting, andflying. The cacophony shocks me. After days in thesilent wilds of forests and mountains, I find myselfin a veritable Bangkok of birds. Up on the cliffs, fluffygrey chicks catch the breeze in their down, impatientfor working parents to come home. These are beautiful birds, white and graceful, with yellow heads and sky blue eyes outlined withblack streaks. Surrounded by them, I take in the louddisplay until my ears are ringing, then drop back towardthe woods of Ile Bonaventure. The dance of nature and man is very much partof daily life on the small cluster of isles called theMagdalen Islands, 150 miles southeast of CapGaspe, the Gaspe Peninsula’s easternmost point. Ascribble of sandbars and islands rimmed with fieryred bluffs, the Magdalens remain a world apart fromthe mainland. They are by far the least known cornerof the province. It’s sunny and warm, and the islands seem practicallyCaribbean with their white-sand beaches andturquoise lagoons. On the beach, oystercatcherspeck for shellfish. Hardworking islanders do thesame, digging in the watery shallows for clams thatwill end up in chowder howls on dining tables.Unlike most North Americans, the Madelinotsstill gather much of their food from the wild. On thiswindswept archipelago, man is predator, fish andshellfish his prey. Every wooden house I pass has adog, a line of windblown laundry, and a few dozenlobster pots stacked against the lee wall.I end my Quebecois where I began it, on theshores of the mighty St. Lawrence River. I camp outon the riverbank in a tent near the water’s edge. IThe dance of nature and man is very much part of daily lifeon the small cluster of isles called the Magdalen IslandsDwelling in the shadow of sunlitPercé Rock, the Gaspé village of Percéoffers tours to the landmark.find myself listening to the lullaby of whales outside. For hours they continue their slow journey, surfacing.loudly exhaling, then slipping hack under thewater. Every few minutes, one seems to whisper tome from the river, like a child begging me to comeand play. The sighs sound again and again, so thatafter midnight I’m compelled to get up and jointhem on the inky edge of the St. Lawrence. All humans need nature – and I have found it inQuebec. Through the hours before dawn I sit alonewith the whales. I can’t see into their eyes, but Isense that they register my presence. We feel eachother’s closeness, breathing together, sharing an extraordinaryencounter in the wilds of Quebec.National Geographic TravelerPhotos by Melissa Farlow
