Support -Post Traumatic Stress DisorderMr M is an ex-serviceman who has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He was aware thatothers suffer from this disorder and current provision does not meet their needs. Mr Maimed to fill that gap by establishing a support group and service for people with PostTraumatic Stress Disorder.Interventions Outcomes ChallengesThe Project Co-ordinator wasable to signpost Mr M toorganisations able to advisehim on formally setting up avoluntary organisation, toenable him to accessfunding, advice on CRBchecks and appropriateinsurance.Mr M’s research indicatedthat the group is the first ofits kind in the country, andwill hopefully be constitutedas a voluntary organisationdelivered from the Centrefor Independent Living inOldham.Mr M found it a challenge tomanage his own healthcondition, establish the newservice and find a venue forthe group to meet in.8. Cooking and teachingMr S has enduring mental health issues and found that cooking made life more bearable andprovided him with some inner peace. He acquired training from the council which equippedhim to teach others; he aimed to deliver a social enterprise focussing on teaching peoplewith a learning disability how to cook.Interventions Outcomes ChallengesMr S needed support toaccess start-up funding, gainadvice from business supportagencies and to assess thepotential impact on hiswelfare benefits if he was toearn money. Mr S neededsupport from the Project Co-Mr S was supportedintensively by the Project Coordinatorfor over twelvemonths and has gained agreat deal of confidence andknowledge over that time.He has learned that hisMr S found it personallydifficult to engage with theworld in addition to copingwith his own health issuesand continuing his role as aninformal carer for his Mother20
ordinator to attend meetingsto ensure that heunderstood and was able toact upon the advice givenillness does not allow him tosustain the drive required toset up a paying enterprise.He is now delivering theservice on a voluntary basis.9. SHOUTJamie has a learning disability and runs a voluntary service providing advocacy to otherdisabled people. The service which is free of charge is run on a weekly basis and is hosted bythe local Centre for Independent Living.Interventions Outcomes ChallengesThe group have receivedadvice and support from theProject Co-ordinator onsetting up and running a nonprofit organisation, accessingCRB checks, policies andprocedures and potentialsources of start-up funding.The group have not to datereceived any funding and willrequire ongoing support togain this if the future of theservice is to be secured.It has been a challenge forJamie to engage withexternal agencies.10. Shop in sheltered accommodationMiss S attended Council run day services for many years before receiving a Personal Budget.One of the day services she attended worked with a local sheltered accommodation servicefor older people, supporting people with a learning disability to run a small shop for theresidents of the sheltered accommodation in the communal area. Under the modernisationof day services within the Borough, this service ceased and Miss S found this difficult toaccept. She was keen to continue the activity and used her new Personal Budget to employa Personal Assistant (PA) to support her to do so.Interventions Outcomes ChallengesMiss S was supported by theProject Co-ordinator toengage with the HousingAssociation to ensure thatthey accepted her as avolunteer in order for her tobe covered for insurancepurposes.The shop is runningsuccessfullyThis model has now beenreplicated in other housingassociation properties byfriends of Miss S supportedby their PAs.Miss S did not want todevelop this into a formalenterprise which was achallenge for the ProjectCoordinator21
