Youth NewsAugust Retreat by Peggy DahlbergBeach clean-up at Sleeping Bear Sand DunesThe Christ Church Cranbrook middle and high school kids got togetherover the summer to go on a youth retreat. The purpose of the retreatwas get to know each other better by working together on a communityservice project, have a bunch of fun and to explore and deepen theirfaith.Looking back on the weekend of August 13-15, I would say “MissionAccomplished!” The weekend began on Friday afternoon with a groupof kids meeting who–for the most part–didn’t know each other gettinginto cars to head to the Traverse City area for the weekend. We stoppedin Cadillac for go-carting and I’ll tellyou what, when a couple of thesekids get their licenses, watch out!!I feared for my life out on thattrack!! The kids had a riot! So didthe adults–Lyle Dahlberg, Christopherde Movellan and Mark Williamsand me! (Why is it that I liketo go fast in my own car but not ina go-cart??) After we settled downwith ice cream cones, we headedoff to the retreat site with a slightBonfire and S'Mores!detour by a yak farm. Followingdinner on Friday night we had a bon fire, roasted marshmallows, mades’mores and were entertained by Jackson Prepolec and Christopher deMovellan playing guitar.Saturday morning came early and we met at the Sleeping Bear SandDunes Visitor Center to receive our instructions on our beach clean- upassignment. The group had to record any dead fishand birds, record their level of decomposition andbury them. We also picked up garbage we foundalong the beach. It is amazing how much garbagethere is on a remote stretch of beach! The parkranger explained that some if it is from people onthe beach, but some of it washed up on the shorefrom Wisconsin! To cool off after a HOT morning doing the beachclean-up, the group had lunch and went for a swimat the Empire Beach. We had to get moving thoughto go to the Platte River for our afternoon ofkayaking! What a great time! Back to the retreatsite for dinner and then off to thedrive- in to watch two first runmovies!Sunday morning was a time tosleep in so we had our church serviceon the deck. Fr. Cory Randalldubbed it “Christ Church CranbrookNorth”! We served eachother communion and read prayersrelating to taking care of each otherand the Earth. In what should have been a quietride home with three car loads ofsleeping teenagers, Christopherde Movellan kept the kids engagedwith a game of texting trivia (don’tworry, the drivers were NOTtexting!)We arrived back at the CCC parkinglot with exhausted but happykids, hugs goodbye and a newacolyte out of the group!I think that the stage is set forPastor Beth tocome in and havean eager group ofkids who want toserve others, havefun together andexplore and deepentheir relationshipwith God.Thank you for thisopportunity to serveand get to know youin this capacity! I look forwardto watching these amazing kidsdevelop into responsible, caringyoung adults. My faith in thefuture is very positive based on theyouth at CCC!Enjoying a good old-fashioned drive-in movie.Join usforWorship!Saturdays5 PMRite II: A casual servicewith music, message andcommunion.Sundays8 AMRite I: A traditional servicewith message andcommunion.Sundays10 AMA family service withmessage, full choir,Nursery, Sunday Schooland Christian Formation.Contemporary Musicat the 10 AM services onthe third weekend of themonth.Wednesday MorningEucharist7AM—7:30 AM in St.Dunstan’s Chapel is aspecial opportunity torefresh mind and spirit. The Calendar of Saintsand Commemorations isused for the selection ofprayers and Scripture. This service is followed bya Bible Study.7
