AND THERE WERE in the same country shepherds
abiding in the field, keeping watch over
their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the
Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord
shone round about them: and they were sore
afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not:
for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great
joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is
born this day in the city of David a Savior, which
is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto
you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling
clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there
was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly
host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the
highest, and on earth peace, good will toward
men. -Luke 2:8-14
Advent by Candlelight
Ed Mullins ©
aAdvent by Candlelight is an absolutely beautiful evening and a perfect
way for busy women to start the holiday season. Beautifully decorated
tables serve as the backdrop for shared hors d’oeuvres, dessert and
coffee. Afterwards, a procession leads women into the sanctuary to
enjoy music and hear four women of the church share their insights on
the Advent season. Hostesses invite seven other women from inside
and outside the church to join them, and provide festive decorations for
their table, an hors d’oeurve to share and a favorite dessert.
Advent by Candlelight will be Monday, December 7 at 6:15 PM.
Blue Christmas
Sunday, December 13 at 4 PM
For some, the holidays have a way of focusing and heightening our
sadness and fears. We can feel “out of step” with the celebration
going on everywhere around us. At the Blue Christmas service we
will have a chance to address the issues that are weighing some
of us down. There will be words of encouragement, prayers for
healing, glimmers of light and hope for tomorrow. Please join us.
Holiday Giving
aAt this time of year we often have parishioners
who want to give a special Christmas offering
over and above their pledge. So that the
church accounting office correctly interprets
your giving intentions during the holidays,
please do the following:
If you wish to make a pledge payment:
• Use your regular
pledge envelopes
for the month of
December.
• Make your
check payable to
“Christ Church
Cranbrook.”
• Write your envelope number and “2009
Pledge Payment” on the memo line.
If you wish to make a Christmas
contribution:
• Use the Christmas envelope dated
December 25, 2009.
• Make your check payable to “Christ
Church Cranbrook.”
• Write your envelope number and
“Christmas 2009” on the memo line.
If you would like to make both a
Christmas contribution and a pledge
payment:
• Please write separate checks and use
the appropriate envelope for each
contribution.
4-Part Offering
• When making your check for the 4-Part
Offering for Altar Flowers, Music,
Outreach and Columbarium, please
indicate “4-Part Offering” on the memo
line.
• If you would like your offerings to be
acknowledged in the Christmas Eve
bulletins, please return your request form
no later than December 10.
From The Priest-In-Charge
My Dear Friends at Christ Church Cranbrook:
It is with both joy and sadness that I greet you
for the last time as your Priest-In-Charge. Joy
in that Gary Hall will be leading you as Rector,
beginning January 4, 2010. Sadness that my
time with you (almost ten years) will be over and
I will miss you greatly.
The past eight months have been the most
fulfilling of my Priesthood. I have learned how
gifted our parishioners are and how blessed we
are to be a part of Christ Church Cranbrook. I
have learned that with your assistance, CCC can
“come alive” and make new programs happen
effectively. I have learned what an excellent staff
(laity and clergy) can do together to move our
Church forward. I have learned how wonderful
music can add to a worship service but also how
our choir can inspire people of all ages. I have
seen our children thrive under positive leadership
and pray that this program will grow and
prosper.
Our parish continues to grow in diversity
and inclusivity and my fond wish is that this
will continue. A major part of my ministry has
been to see our church (and others where I have
been fortunate to serve) welcome newcomers
and those who in some way might be considered
by others as“different.” I Will Never Give Up
That Effort.
We are a blessed parish whose foundation is
our Faith as shown to us in the Trinity. Our
Lord Jesus Christ will continue to show all of us
God’s way.
© Chris Chen, Life & Style Photography
As I say goodbye, I want to thank you for
your support and efforts in areas too numerous
to mention. In response to my asking back
in my first sermon in May, you gave me many
thoughts, concerns, and creative ideas. Your
input was invaluable. As you go forth, you will
always be in my thoughts and prayers. May God
bless each of you.
May the peace of Christ be with you now and
forever.
What are You Doing on
c
Christmas Day?
Christ Church Cranbrook will continue the tradition of hosting the
annual Christmas Day brunch for senior citizens. In the past, parish
members have helped us provide hospitality and holiday cheer
to people who otherwise might spend Christmas alone. Will you
consider bringing food, or helping with the set-up, service, or cleanup
again this year? You could make this service to our seniors part of
your Christmas tradition.
Some food items required are: roast turkey with dressing, mashed potatoes, cooked ham, rolls &
butter, candied yams, pies (apple, pumpkin, and pecan), and cookies. We also need items like: festive
paper napkins and styrofoam, lidded meal trays.
If you are not the culinary type, please consider helping as a driver (bringing home bound seniors
to and from the brunch), with set-up (9:30 AM to 11:30 AM), as a server (11 AM to 1 PM), or with
clean up (12:30 PM to 2 PM).
Sign up sheets are on the bulletin board outside the Guild Hall. We hope to see your name!
that
continue to depend
Festival of Gifts
dDon’t miss the chance to experience CCC’s annual Festival of Gifts. Our acolytes will participate
in this traditional pageant, filling nativity roles and reading Bible passages to reenact the
Christmas story complemented by live animals such as sheep and goats.
The Festival of Gifts gives parishioners an opportunity to share their Christmas joy by bringing
new and unwrapped gifts to
the cradle of the Christ Child to
be distributed to human service
agencies. Some suggestions for gifts
include warm clothing for all ages,
toys, games, books for children,
hats, gloves or mittens, toiletries,
and gifts of money to support these
agencies. This is a good opportunity
for families to shop together and
talk about why we give to others
You can enjoy the Festival of
Gifts on Saturday, December 12
at the 5 PM service or Sunday,
December 13 at the 10 AM
service.
Saint Nick & Tree Trimming Party
t This is a genuine family event you won’t want to miss! Saint Nick’s Tree Trimming party
will take place Sunday, December 6, in the Hospitality Center after the 10 AM service.
Saint Nick will greet children and read stories. Children will enjoy creating Christmas
ornaments and can hang them on the tree themselves. There will also be a cookie
decorating activity.
Families can feel free to either purchase an ornament for the tree, create one at home, or
create one at the party. Don’t miss it!
Docents’
Corner
o Of the many artists who produced works for Christ
Curch Cranbrook, we have chosen to focus on Samuel
Yellin, metal worker (1885-1940), because 2009
marks the centennial year of his studio in Philadelphia.
This studio is still operating under the leadership
of his granddaughter, Clare Yellin. Several other
metal smiths contributed art works to Christ Church
Cranbrook, notably Frank Koralewski who crafted
the candlesticks on the altar and Edward F. Caldwell
Co. who prepared the cross shaped chandeliers.
Samuel Yellin, however, is considered the American
master in the art of iron sculpture. Amazingly,
his gift was apparent when at age 11 he was sent to a
school in Russia noted for its focus on the arts. It was
there he earned the nickname, “The Devil Born with
a Hammer in his Hand.” His teachers must have noticed
the bright, precocious child with a touch of the
imp, for his personality in later years was described
as, “a man of easy loquaciousness and greater energy.”
He charmed his associates and clients as much by his
personality as by his work.
By age 17, he had completed his apprenticeship
and was a master metal worker. At age 20 he came
to America from Poland. Only four years later he
founded his own company in Pennsylvania. He also
had a studio in New York City, where he died of a
Samuel Yellin, Metal Worker
heart attack at the age of 55. Between the years of
1909 and 1940, Yellin produced innumerable works
of great beauty and variety. At its peak, his ironworks
employed more than 200 people. When he could
not find American-born blacksmiths, he hired newly
arrived immigrants of all nationalities. Though they
spoke no common language, their work united them.
Yellin was established in America when George
Gough Booth hired him to work at Cranbrook.
Mr. Booth, who himself had worked in the family
metal working business, had visisted Yellin’s forge in
Philadelphia. Yellin crafted the gates to Cranbrook
house on Lone Pine from Mr. Booth’s design. His
works can also be seen at the DIA, the DAC, and the
Detroit Public Library. By the time orders stopped
because of the Great Depression, Yellin was a wealthy
man. Rather than closing his shop, he kept his staff
busy with new designs; thereby spending most of his
fortune but still using his considerable talent.
Most of the wrought iron door locks at CCC were
excecuted by Yellin, including the front door to the
nave and the door to St. Dunstan’s Chapel. In his
own words, Samuel Yellin called ironworks the “salt
and pepper of art.” It does not stand alone, but it
enhances the beauty of the wood.
t The Rector Search Committee is pleased and excited to announce the appointment of
The Very Reverend Gary Hall, Ph.D., as the seventh Rector of Christ Church Cranbrook.
Father Hall comes to us from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in
Evanston, Illinois, where he served as Dean and President for the past five years.
The members of the Vestry expressed great confidence in Reverend Hall, finding
him not only quite experienced but offering the energy and enthusiasm needed
to continue the mission of our parish.
Some CCC parishioners may remember that Reverend Hall served as Assistant
Minister in the late 1970s while his wife, Kathy, was Assistant Director of Religious
Education. Their son, Oliver, was born here and baptized at CCC.
His first day in office will be Monday, January 4, with his first sermons being
the following weekend.
The Reverend Joyce Matthews Elected President of
Standing Committee
On Tuesday, November 17, Christ Church Cranbrook’s own Pastor Joyce Matthews, Associate
Priest, was elected President of the Standing Committee. This is quite an honor and
reflects highly on CCC.
Please join us in congratulating Pastor Matthews!
