Getting Started, Againby Gary Hall“In my beginning is my end.” So beginsT.S. Eliot’s poem, “East Coker,” one of hisFour Quartets. At the time of this writing, asKathy and I prepare to move out of the deaneryof Seabury-Western Theological Seminaryin Evanston and into the rectory at ChristChurch Cranbrook, we cannot help rememberingthe time, 31 years ago, when we packedup another, smaller house in another universitytown (Cambridge, Massachusetts) and drovewith two cats to our new life in Birmingham-Bloomfield. We have acquired a lot of stuff(experiences, possessions, blessings, scars) overthose years, but the basic movement is still thesame. Only this time we’re bringing two terriers(Tessie, a Scotty, and Sandie, a Cairn) alongfor the ride. The experience of returning to ChristChurch Cranbrook is at once familiar andnew. Over the course of the interview process,I had the occasion to go running in andaround my old haunts, and when visitingchurch I met half a dozen people I knew wellfrom my earlier time here. It was a joy toreacquaint myself with the familiar landscapeand faces. Yet so much has changed in thethree intervening decades. Two rectors havecome and gone in the interim. The parish hasgrown and developed both in membership andministries. And Kathy and I have watched ourson, Oliver (born at St. Joseph’s in Pontiac)grow up. Along the way Kathyhas had a career as an independentschool elementary librarianand teacher and event coordinatorat Seabury. I have gone tograduate school (M.A., Ph.D. inEnglish at UCLA) and workedas parish vicar, associate priest,English teacher, school administrator, seminary professor anddean, and rector of a parishabout the size and shape ofChrist Church. So though wewill look familiar to each other,we should remember that we’re not quite thesame as we were when we parted company in1981.“In my beginning is my end.” The Christianlife offers just this surprising blend offamiliarity and newness to each and all ofus as we attend, separately and together, towhat God might be up to in our lives. ChristChurch is continuous with the congregationit has been since the 1920s, but God’s Spirithas been at work in it in new and graciousways over the years. Similarly, I am the sameperson who preached, made pastoral visits, ledthe Marquis Club, and taught here in the late1970s, but God has been at work on me, too.In the same way spouses and children and parentscan surprise each other by doing or sayingsomething new and unpredictable when youexpect them to do something else, so you andI should be open to the ways in which we willeach learn something about the other that wenever could have predicted.“In my beginning is my end.” At the closeof Four Quartets Eliot says a complementarytruth: “to make an end is to make a beginning.”Both Christ Church and I are sayinggoodbye to the familiar in December in orderin January to welcome the new. As we do this,we each prepare to greet someone we alreadyknow. As this new year dawns, let us togetherstep into a familiar relationship that promisessomething at once comfortable and breathtakinglynew.Join usforWorship!Saturdays5 PMRite II: A casualservice with music, message and communion.Sundays8 AMRite I: A traditionalservice withmessage and communion.Sundays10 AMA family servicewith message, full choir,SundaySchool andChristianFormation.ContemporaryMusicat the 5 PM and 10AM services on thethirdweekend of themonth.WednesdayMorningEucharist7AM—7:30 AMin St. Dunstan’sChapel is a specialopportunity torefresh mind andspirit. Your 2010 Vestry Candidates!Robert DeniousWhen Cathy and I moved our family here 10years ago from suburban Philadelphia, wemade some wonderful discoveries. One of them wasChrist Church Cranbrook. Like many others, thefirst time I walked into the church, I was awed byits physical beauty. Since then, I have watched withgratitude as each member of our family has becomemeaningfully involved in the life of the church. Our two children, Rob, Jr. and Nancy, wereconfirmed here under the capable tutorage of Fr.Cory Randall. Today each of them is fortunate tocount Cory as a friend. Cory pays them an annualvisit at their college in Massachusetts. Several yearsago, Cory was a regular on the sidelines at many ofNancy’s high school athletic contests, becoming sowell known that Nancy’s teammates would announceto her: “Your priest is here.” As you might imagine,Cory’s steady and cheerful presence made a deep impressionnot only on our daughter, but on her teammates,so much so that it prompted many of them toask Nancy about her church and her faith.Fr. Ed also did a lot for our children, encouragingtheir participation in the acolyte corps, encouragingthem to stand up in front of the congregationand teaching them to appreciate the majesty of ourEpiscopal liturgy. He too attended athletic events, bringing his camera and capturing the action on film.Speaking of film, I should mention that Ed launchedour son’s television career when he invited him to be aguest on his cable show.Cathy has served on Vestry and hasserved in many other capacities at CCC,including organizing Advent by Candlelightfor several years. I am grateful toher for many things, including introducingme to many of you. It’s nice to havea spouse who is outgoing. As for me, I suppose it’s worth notingthat I enjoy coming to worship atour church. Some of the less fortunateof you who have happened to sit nearme on the left side of the aisle, aboutmidway back, will also know that I lovethe Episcopal hymnal. I am not shyabout belting it out. I have served on acommittee or two, volunteered here andthere, but frankly haven’t contributed asmuch as many of you have to Christ Church Cranbrook.Service on Vestry would help me begin torectify that, and I would welcome the opportunity toserve in this way as we welcome our new rector.Joyce TurlandIt is an honor for me to be asked to run for the vestryat this magnificent church. We are truly blessedto have this great facility, a gift of the Booth family. We have an excellent staff and programs in place andI look forward to working with our new Rector, GaryHall, as he brings new direction to our parish. At Christ Church I am a member of the EpiscopalChurch Women. I have served as the group’s Treasurerfor many years, and have worked on the annualRummage Sale and Book Sale.I am also the volunteer Parish Health Nurse. Ichair the Parish Health Ministry, arrange the annualFlu Clinic, serve as the nurse for the Vacation BibleSchool, take the blood pressures and assist with healthissues of our guests from the South Oakland Shelter,as well as parishioners when requested. I was instrumentalin the successful completion of the healthrelated aspects of the licensing application for theLittle Lambs. I was involved in the purchase of twodefibrillators and I arrange the training of the staffand ushers. In my professional life, I was a publichealth nurse both in the Grand Blanc Schools and forthe Oakland County Health DepartmentBorn in Lowell, Massachusetts, I am a lifelongEpiscopalian and have been an active member atchurches wherever my husband Bill and I have lived. For example, at St John’s Royal Oak, I waselected to the vestry and served as SeniorWarden. I have just completed serving mythird three-year term as a Member of theBoard of Trustees at St Anne’s Mead, anEpiscopal Assisted Living and Nursing CareFacility in Southfield. If you asked those with whom I haveworked, I believe they would say that I ama team player, have served as a memberand chairman of many committees in mynursing and private life, and understand thecooperation and respect necessary for vestryservice. I have the desire, time and energy toserve and pledge my best if elected.5

Your 2010 Vestry Candidates! - ContinuedClark M. Harperam honored indeed to be nominated to serve onI the Vestry. Serving would be taken very seriouslyby me.I am a third generation member of ChristChurch Cranbrook. My grandparentsmoved to Bloomfield Village in the early1930s, and found this wonderful church. My Grandfather, Cornelius Mark Harper,Sr., served a term on the Vestry, and myGrandmother, Mary Harper, served onthe Altar Guild. I went through SundaySchool, and joined the Dewitt Club (whenit was operating) and the Marquis Club(when that was operating). Around my lateteens and into my early twenties I did notattend regularly, but I kept finding myselfdrawn back to my “home church,” and inmy late twenties started to attend more.I have now served 10 years in the UsherCorps and am one of three Head Ushers. Ialso serve as a Lay Visitor, Lay Eucharist Minister (assoon as I take one more test), Funeral Ministry andI always do a lot of volunteering for the SOS Shelter(driving, dinners, and overnights). I find all theseundertakings very rewarding, as we are directed by theBible.I have a varied background, including militaryservice (U.S. Army), business, Financial Aid Director, and a Legal background. I also served in fourdifferent Executive Board positions in my Fraternity,Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity, including President in the semester when we wentco-ed, thus ending a long-running dispute with ourNational Office. I am familiar with Robert’s Rules ofOrder from my days in the Fraternity. I’ve seen lifefrom many different angles, and feel this will help meto bring experience and “thinking outside the box” tothe Vestry.I feel the most pressing matter that will be beforethe Vestry is the budget and our stewardship. This economy is wrecking havoc with Churches allover, but we need to do more. Our new Rector willneed sufficient funding for what we are currently supporting, plus funding for new service and outreachwhich he may wish to pursue.John Wakevainenhave been a member of Christ Church CranbrookI for 25 years and have three grown children; Maggie,Kate & Andrew who participated in and attendedSunday School, Acolyte Core & YouthChoir at CCC. I also have three wonderfulgrandchildren (ask me about them sometime).I Graduated from University of Michiganin 1973 with a Bachelor of Science inForestry and in 1993 earned a Master ofScience in Finance from Walsh College. My career has spanned 36 years at DTEEnergy in various positions, currently inSupply ChainCurrently I coordinate Lay Visitor schedules, programs and activities such as FriendshipTeas 2-3 times a year, annual dinner forour guests from the South Oakland Shelter, distribution of flowers from the altar eachSunday during non penitential seasons including theChristmas Poinsettias and the large array of flowersfor Easter. I am also a Eucharistic Visitor; takingHoly Communion to parishioner’s who are unable toattend church.Other activities that I participate in at CCCinclude being a Eucharistic Minister and Lay Reader,Usher at special music and liturgical events and assist6with Memorial/Funeral Receptions, Newcomer Connectionbrunches and various other functions.I am a member of the Docents who provide guidedtours of CCC’s many treasures and am also a memberof the Art Works CommitteePreviously I have served on the Vestry and wasChair of the Personnel Committee. I also taughtChurch School.I am honored to be asked to be a candidate forVestry. How we welcome our new Rector, Gary Hall, and how we move forward under his leadership willbe critical at CCC in the next few years. We all need to be engaged as we welcome andassist our new Rector, Gary Hall, as he starts his newministry at CCC. We should be open to change andlisten to The Reverend Canon Hall and his prioritiesas he works to improve the life and programs offeredto parishioners. As we engage and welcome change we should placespecial emphasis on being pastoral with the implementationin the coming years. Change is never easybut I believe it is easier to accomplish lasting changeif it is done with a compassionate and caring tone forone another. How we implement change as a faithcommunity will be as important as what changes weimplement.

Gretchen D. LambertSpiritual journey; I was baptized, confirmed, marriedand my son was also baptized at CCC. Mymother was an active member of the church and isnow residing in the Columbarium. My husband and I moved to Texas in 2003 andjoined the Episcopal Church there where my husband,Mike, converted from Catholicism to Episcopalian. We returned to Oakland County in 2004 and triedchurches closer to our home. The music, preaching and teachingministries of CCC are very important to me, and ifelected to the Vestry I will look for ways to supportand enhance those ministries. Also, as the parent ofa ninth grader, I believe it is critically important forCCC to find a new and effective way to minister tothe spiritual needs of high-schoolers, both for today’steenagers and for the large number of younger childrenwho fill our church school classes today. I amInvolvement in CCC:• took Alpha in 2001• am a member of the Altar Guild• participate in the Newcomers brunch• stay as an overnight chaperone for SOS andassist with driving• assist with set up and clean up for special occasions• am involved with the Alternative Gift Fair• joined the now defunct parking lot driverprogram• am on the Christian Formation Commission• participated in Habitat for Humanity• walk for Lighthouse and Crop walks• Co-founded Servant SaturdayI was fortunate to attend many of FatherTerry’s adult education classes which helped me, alife long Episcopalian, learn more about my faith.Direction; I would like to see spiritual education, community and outreach as focal points in the upcoming years. I am a firmbeliever in judge not lest ye be judged and look for that to continue to be an integralpart of our church.Professionally; I am a customer service manager for a Fortune 16 company maintainingtop service levels and currently running 15% under budget.Extracurricular;I am treasurer of my local Toastmaster club and enjoy Yoga and kayaking.Personally; I have been married since 1985.We have one son, Matthew who resides in Miami and is an architect specializingin urban revitalization. In closing; I am honored by the invitation to run for the vestry. I ask that you notlook at me as one you may have seen but to look into my heart and soul to see theperson I am and what I can offer to you, the people of CCC.eager to play an active role in parish leadership as wechart our future with a new rector.Since moving to Southeastern Michigan, I havebeen active in the leaderships and boards of anumber of non-profit, educational and culturalorganizations. Among other things, I havebeen involved in fund-raising for the UnitedWay and I serve on the Board and ExecutiveCommittee of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Board of Governors of CranbrookInstitute of Science and the Board of Trusteesof Cranbrook Educational Community. Your 2010 Vestry Candidates! - ContinuedAlong with my wife and daughter, Jackie andJordan, I began attending regular services atChrist Church Cranbrook in 1999. We were warmlywelcomed and my early church experienceincluded participation in a men’s fellowshipgroup led by Ron Spann.Jordan was confirmed and became a regularparticipant in the Journey to Adulthoodprogram. She and Jackie were soon baptizedat CCC. I was later baptized, as well. For most of my time at Christ ChurchCranbrook, it has been my pleasure to serve asa Lay Reader for various services. I’ve also enjoyedreading several times for the Festival ofGifts Service and at least two special readingsof God’s Trombones. In September, 2008, Iwas asked to serve on the Rector Search Committee.Working with Pamela Redfield, PeggyDahlberg and Robin Eikenberry on the parish profilesubcommittee, we compiled a new parish profile thatwas sent out to the various candidates who expressedIEmery KingMollie Proctoram honored to be a 2010 candidate for Vestryof CCC. We, as a church community, have gonethrough many transitions over this past decade andnow we are poised to welcome a new Rectorto lead us into the next. There is much energyand many resources among us and cultivatingthe vitality in the congregation is somethingthat is important to me. The excitementon the faces of our children as they enterthe church for the Eucharist; the spiritualdevelopment experienced through our variedliturgies, inspiring music and able clergy; theChristian formation created among familiesand friends; the range of leadership we havefrom new members to the mothers and fatherswho have the joy of using the prefix “grand”;all this and more places us on a foundationfrom which to continue the development ofour connectedness with Christ through each otherand those around us.I spent my formative years within the EpiscopalChurch at St. James in Birmingham, singing in thechoir and participating in the Junior Altar Guild. After completing college with an MBA in Financemy career in banking took me to Atlanta. While thereI held active roles at the Cathedral of St. Philip inBuckhead. From church school teacher, VacationBible School (VBS) coordinator, president of thechurch’s nursery guild, to committee chair for theirannual Antique Show, my life was fulfilled serving inmany differing capacities and sharing in the spiritualgrowth of my children, James and Alex.8interest in applying for the position of Rector. Inaddition, Kingberry Productions -- founded by Jackieand I -- produced a video on Christ Church Cranbrookthat also became a part of the parish profile. Itis hoped that it will be used to tell the story of CCCfor some time to come. My participation on thesearch committee has given me a much deeper andbroader understanding of not the Episcopal faith, butthe inner-workings of our church. The administrativeresponsibilities of managing a church of this size areconsiderable. The most meaningful gift of my membershipat CCC is a greater awareness of Christ in my lifeand the lives of my wife and daughter. Jackie andI regularly attend bible study with JoAnne Holtonon Friday mornings. She and our classmates haveenriched our lives beyond measure through the graceof our Lord, Jesus Christ. I have agreed to seek electionto the vestry because I want to continue to serveChrist and be an expression of Him in a significantand tangible way.Once my family moved back to Birmingham in1998, we joined Christ Church Cranbrook. I immediatelypicked up where I left off in Atlanta andbecame a Sunday School teacher, VBS leader and“Choir Mom.” I became a member of the Vestryin 2001 and served as Assistant Secretary. Overthe years other opportunities presented themselveswithin Children’s Ministry, the initiation of Adventby Candlelight at CCC, Strategic Planning, Auctionfor Outreach, Christian Formation Committee, aswell as, behind the scene support for our family andoutreach activities.During the work week you can find me just east onLone Pine where I am an Investment Officer in ThePrivateWealth Group at The PrivateBank. Mark Williamshave been a member of Christ ChurchI Cranbrook since marrying my wonderful wifeDiane in 1986. I have been an active usher since1986 as well. I have previously served on thevestry through the last transition to a new rectorand prior to that as ad hoc Treasurer. Diane andI have encouraged our children Margo (20), Glynis(16) and Rhys (10) to participate and growwithin the church. It has been very rewardingand fulfilling to be a part of their spiritual journeyand life.I am interested in serving on the Vestry againso that I can contribute to our community andhelp work for its future success. Our new rectorwill need support in his first years with ourcongregation. In many ways the Vestry will needto be creative with the resources of the Church,as the current economic conditions persist, whilewe try to expand and improve the programsavailable to our parish. I believe in a holisticapproach to programs that provideproportional service to our parishbased on its many constituents. Oneof the most important is our youthprograms and ministry to them. I feelit is the best way we can foster growthand maintain the long term financialstability of Christ Church Cranbrook.During my day job, I am the Presidentand CEO of Heber Fuger Wendin,Inc.
