Third Year 2012-2013 [MPhys Course]Choice of CourseDuring Michaelmas, you must decide whetheryou will take the three year course (BA) orthe four year course (MPhys). Your tutor willhave received the results of your Part A examinationover the long vacation, and if youhave any doubts concerning which course youshould take you should discuss the situationcarefully with your tutor in the light of yourexamination results. After Part A the examinerswill have published a list of those studentseligible to proceed to the MPhys course; thestandard required is the equivalent of a II.1Class or better in Part A. You should bear inmind that the four year course is designed tobe a challenging one and will involve an appreciableamount of advanced work. You willalso be expected to work more independentlythan during your first three years. If you takethe four year course, 42% of the total marksleading to your final degree classification willdepend on work done in the 4 th year.Part B ExaminationThe examination will take place at the end ofTrinity Term and consist of six papers: B1: I.Flows, Fluctuations and Complexity and II.Symmetry and Relativity, B2: III. Quantum,Atomic and Molecular Physics and IV. Sub-Atomic Physics, B3: V. General Relativityand Cosmology and VI. Condensed-MatterPhysics. Students will be required to answertwo questions from a total of four on each ofthese papers. The material will be covered by lectures, tutorialsand classes concentrated in Michaelmas& Hilary of the third year. Full details of thesyllabuses are given in Appendix E.Practical Work including Written SkillsThe requirement for practical work for PartB is 10 days (usually 6 days in Michaelmasand 4 days in Trinity), The solo practical takesplace in weeks 3-6 of Michaelmas Term.. Itis possible to substitute 6 days of practicalwork, by taking a second short option, but aminimum of 6 days must be offered. There isalso an assessed practical, see page 9.There is no practical work in Hilary butstudents should write a report on the onepractical they have done on their own. Thepractical report write-up is part of the trainingin written communication skills and contributesto Written Skills in Part B.The Practical Course Handbook and http://www.physics.ox.ac.uk/teach/exammatters.htm will contain details of the handling oflogbooks.Short Options & Language OptionDetails of the Short Options (and alternatives)are given on page 27. It is possible tooffer a second Short Option in place of 6 daysof practical work.Alternative subjects, extra practicals andextended practicalsGiven the necessary permission, it is alsopossible to offer alternative subjects or anaccount of extra practicals or an extendedpractical in place of the compulsory ShortOption. Details are given on page 27.Changing from the MPhys to the BAIf you are considering transferring from theMPhys to the BA, this must be done throughto your College. If you change to the BAbefore you have entered for the MPhys PartB (4 th week of Hilary Term),you will have todo a BA project and either a BA group projector an extra assessed practical. You willhave to formally withdraw from the MPhysdegree course via College and re-enter to dothe BA course. If you decide to change to the BA after youhave entered for the MPhys Part B (4 th weekof Hilary Term), you will have to formallywithdraw from the MPhys degree course viaCollege and re-enter to do the BA course.Your classification will be determined byperformance in Parts A and B of the FHS.Those who enter the FHS and satisfactorilycomplete the fourth year will be eligible topetition for a Masters degree, the MPhys, but those who, for whatever reason, do notwish to proceed to the fourth year, or whobegin but do not complete the fourth year, are still eligible for the BA, as determinedby their performance in Parts A and B ofthe FHS.
