By Friday<strong>of</strong> 6 th week you will be required to return aform indicating your option choices in order<strong>of</strong> preference.Alternative Major OptionsIt is possible to substitute another subject inplace <strong>of</strong> a Physics Major Option, provided thecourse and exam already exist and are <strong>of</strong> sufficientweight. Permission must be sought viathe Assistant Head <strong>of</strong> Teaching (Academic)in Trinity Term <strong>of</strong> your third year.Exam EntryEntry for the FHS Part B exam is at the end<strong>of</strong> 4 th week <strong>of</strong> Hilary Term, and 3 rd week <strong>of</strong>Trinity Term for Short Option choices (exceptfor certain alternatives). Specific details willbe published by the Examiners.The Examination Regulations provides guidancefor students with special examinationneeds. “... Fluctuations, flows and complexity• B1:II. Symmetry and relativity• B2:III. Quantum, atomic and molecularphysics• B2:IV. Sub-atomic physics• B3:V. General Relativity and cosmology• B3:VI. Condensed-matter physics• BT: VII. Classical mechanicsYour selection must include at least two <strong>of</strong>the subjects II, V and VII.Subjects I-VI are the same as the core PartB physics papers taken by MPhys students,which are examined in three three-hour papers,B1, B2 and B3 as shown above, with1½ hours allocated to each <strong>of</strong> the two sectionsin each paper. The syllabus and lectures forsubject VII Classical Mechanics are identicalwith those for the Physics Short Option S07<strong>of</strong> the same name, but the paper is not thesame. The BT paper is specially set for PPstudents, in the same format as the other sixsubjects in Part B, and 1½ hours in length.The weights assigned to the Part B papersin the Finals algorithm are 1 for each 3-hourPhilosophy paper and ½ for each 1½-hourphysics paper.22
