CRMA AND THE MISSOURI SCHOOL OF JOURNALISMANNOUNCE FINALISTSFeb. 22, <strong>2012</strong>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEwww.citymag.org<strong>2012</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Regional</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> <strong>Awards</strong> <strong>Finalists</strong><strong>Magazine</strong> professionals from around the country chose 152 finalists representing 36 publications in the27-year-old <strong>City</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Regional</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> Association’s national awards competition. <strong>Magazine</strong>s ofvarying circulations competed in 31 categories, including editorial, design, online, e-newsletter <strong>and</strong> anew multiplatform storytelling category. Judges named five finalists in most categories <strong>and</strong> will soonchoose one ultimate winner in each. The winners for work completed in 2011 will be announced at theCRMA’s 36 th Annual Conference to take place May 19–21 at Caesar’s Palace Hotel & Casino in LasVegas.Topping the list with double-digit nominations were Texas Monthly, Los Angeles <strong>Magazine</strong>,Philadelphia <strong>Magazine</strong>, Atlanta <strong>Magazine</strong>, Chicago <strong>Magazine</strong> <strong>and</strong> 5280 (Denver). <strong>Magazine</strong>s with atleast five nominations include D <strong>Magazine</strong>, Portl<strong>and</strong> Monthly, Seattle Met, St. Louis <strong>Magazine</strong>, <strong>and</strong>Washingtonian. Boston <strong>and</strong> Yankee <strong>Magazine</strong>s each received four nominations, while Honolulu<strong>Magazine</strong>, MPLS St. Paul <strong>Magazine</strong> <strong>and</strong> Orange Coast <strong>Magazine</strong> each received three. Judges alsorecognized a number of publications with small <strong>and</strong> mid-size circulations such as Charlotte <strong>Magazine</strong>,Cincinnati <strong>Magazine</strong>, Clevel<strong>and</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong>, Indianapolis Monthly, Main Line Today, Martha’sVineyard <strong>Magazine</strong>, Memphis <strong>Magazine</strong>, Milwaukee <strong>Magazine</strong> <strong>and</strong> New Orleans <strong>Magazine</strong>, all ofwhich received two nominations. Eleven other magazines received one nomination each. They include:417 <strong>Magazine</strong>, Baltimore <strong>Magazine</strong>, Birmingham <strong>Magazine</strong>, Buffalo Spree, B-Metro <strong>Magazine</strong>, Diablo<strong>Magazine</strong>, HOUR Detroit, Inside Columbia, Marin <strong>Magazine</strong>, Pittsburgh <strong>Magazine</strong> <strong>and</strong> Westchester<strong>Magazine</strong>.This year’s editorial nominees covered topics such as:• the encroachment of the education crisis into institutions of higher learning• the death of h<strong>and</strong>writing• the Catholic Church’s response to allegations of sexual abuse <strong>and</strong> cover-ups• concussions, brain damage <strong>and</strong> the <strong>National</strong> Hockey League’s lack of acknowledgement of theproblem• a woman who had 15 abortions in a 17-year period to exercise control over her body <strong>and</strong> hercircumstances• a beloved <strong>and</strong> respected professor’s less-than-amicable departure from the university where heworked to overturn wrongful convictions <strong>and</strong> helped abolish the death penalty in Illinois• the recovery of Joplin, Missouri following a devastating tornado that nearly destroyed the cityOther contenders focused on missing people, a raging fire, a lucrative speed trap, a state’s financialcrisis <strong>and</strong> the best ways to give back.


More than 90 judges, including representatives from publications such as Better Homes <strong>and</strong> Gardens,Bon Appétit, Budget Travel, ESPN The <strong>Magazine</strong>, Esquire, Food Network <strong>Magazine</strong>, GQ, Men’sJournal, Men’s Health, <strong>National</strong> Geographic, Outside, People, Popular Science, Rolling Stone,Runner’s World, Sports Illustrated, Taste of Home, The Atlantic, Vanity Fair <strong>and</strong> Whole Living as wellas journalism professors from the Missouri School of Journalism, selected the finalists.The competition is open to members of CRMA <strong>and</strong> other city <strong>and</strong> regional magazines throughoutNorth America that qualify.
