Graduate School <strong>of</strong> Management. The Law Schoolalso initiated new Deals courses and the TransactionalLawyering Competition, the first <strong>of</strong> its kindat any top-rated law program. The Clarke BusinessLaw Institute, which sponsors the competition, hasgrown this year with the hire <strong>of</strong> an executive director,and is actively recruiting for additional facultyin business law.A key part <strong>of</strong> the Law School’s future is building onits core strength in International and ComparativeLaw. After a six year search, the Law School filledthe Anthony W. and Lulu C. Wang Chair in ChineseLaw this year and established exchange relationshipswith prominent law schools in India andChina. The Law School anticipates adding moreforeign law visitors, as well as foreign-trainedscholars to the permanent faculty.<strong>Cornell</strong>’s Legal Information Institute (LII) is thepreeminent conveyor <strong>of</strong> web-based legal informationin the world and is a powerful form <strong>of</strong> outreachfor both the Law School and the <strong>University</strong>. In thepast year, LII’s site was visited by over 14 milliondifferent people from more than 200 countries, andin one month accounted for 65 percent <strong>of</strong> uniquevisitors to all <strong>Cornell</strong> <strong>University</strong> websites. Half amillion websites link to LII. The LII has majorprograms with developing countries to providecitizens with open access to legal materials,thereby promoting democratization and economicempowerment. The coming year will mark the 20thanniversary <strong>of</strong> the LII, culminating in a conferenceat the Law School in October 2012 that will host500 visitors from LIIs around the globe.With the appointment <strong>of</strong> a new Director <strong>of</strong> Clinical,Advocacy, and Skills Programs and the start <strong>of</strong> anew civil rights clinic in spring 2012, the LawSchool expects to see continued enhancement andcoordination <strong>of</strong> clinics and other skills initiatives.<strong>Plan</strong>ning for the capital building program continues.<strong>Cornell</strong> Law School aims to break ground in thesummer <strong>of</strong> 2012 on Phase 1, which will provideadditional classrooms underground to the east <strong>of</strong>Purcell Courtyard, as well as a new entrance to thecampus. Later phases involve repurposing lockerroom and library stacks within Myron Taylor Hallin dynamic ways, as well as renovating Hughes Hall.Samuel Curtis Johnson GraduateSchool <strong>of</strong> ManagementThe Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School <strong>of</strong>Management’s mission is to develop business leaderswho create, transform and sustain successful organizationsaround the world, generate researchand scholarship that shapes the future practice <strong>of</strong>management, and train the next generation <strong>of</strong>business scholars.In FY 2011-12 Johnson will continue to make criticalinvestments in faculty and programs to furtherglobalize the school, strengthen our centers andinstitutes, deepen our connections to business, andrecruit the faculty <strong>of</strong> the future.Veterinary MedicineThe College <strong>of</strong> Veterinary medicine remains thetop ranked veterinary school in the nation, but itfaces several major challenges in maintaining itsnational stature and achieving the principal goal <strong>of</strong>transitioning from a national to a global leader inanimal health. These challenges include a relativelysmall class size and high tuition, increasing studentdebt, significant budget pressures, and issuesassociated with an aging faculty.Major goals for 2011-12 include: continuing efforts torenew and revitalize the faculty; modestly expandingthe size <strong>of</strong> the entering class to 102 students beginningin the fall <strong>of</strong> 2011 and to establish a classexpansion facility project to enable further enrollmentgrowth as a top institutional priority; developingalternative revenue sources such as clinicalrevenue from a for-pr<strong>of</strong>it clinical operation (CUVS)opened in 2011 and various domestic and internationaleducational initiatives; and, continuing t<strong>of</strong>oster basic and clinical research activities in priorityareas such as infectious disease control, comparativeOperating <strong>Plan</strong> — Details15
