Even thoughhe doesn’t have full votingrights in the first year of histerm, he plans an active twoyears, a pace he’s accustomedto as an activist from Rialto.“I don’t plan to sit on thebench and just watch. I wantto work on issues that affectstudents at Cal <strong>State</strong> <strong>San</strong>Bernardino and other CSUcampuses,” Jackson said. “Iplan to meet with people at<strong>CSUSB</strong> and the chancellor’soffice on what issues areimportant to them. I plan towork with the other trusteesand the governor’s office.”The Board of Trustees setspolicy and provides guidancefor the 23-campus system, itsstudents and 44,000 facultymembers. The CSU systemis the largest single-administrationprovider of highereducation in the world. Anyincreases in financial aid by theboard could reduce the overallamount of student loans andlower the staggering amountof debt newly graduated studentsaccumulate from thoseloans.<strong>CSUSB</strong> President AlbertKarnig praised Jackson as ayoung man determined tomake a difference in dealingwith issues that affect CSUstudents, faculty and staff.“Corey Jackson is a specialyoung man,” Karnig said. “Infact, despite being only 22, healready has an established andwell-respected track record indealing with K-12 and highereducation issues. Corey isthoughtful, extremely personable,very intelligent and committedto educational excellence.”The trustees also appointthe chancellor and vice chancellorsfor the system as wellas campus presidents. Jackson,who as the student representativewill have full votingrights in the second year ofhis term, was one of eightindividuals appointed by thegovernor. Unlike the otherappointees, Jackson does notneed legislative confirmationbecause he is a student representative.<strong>CSUSB</strong>’s first studentCSU trustee was KevinGallagher, who served from1978-80.“Each of these highlyqualified individuals shares mycommitment to higher educationand will work passionatelyto ensure the continuing successof the <strong>California</strong> <strong>State</strong><strong>University</strong> system,” said Gov.Schwarzenegger of Jacksonand his other new appointees.At <strong>CSUSB</strong>, Jackson hasserved as a member ofthe Student Union Boardof Directors and as legislativecoordinator for the<strong>California</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>, <strong>San</strong>Bernardino Lobby Corp. Healso serves as the chairman ofthe Housing Redevelopmentand Beautification Commissionin the city of Rialto. He hasparticipated in a number ofcommunity activities andgroups. He has been the statepresident of the <strong>California</strong><strong>State</strong> NAACP Youth andCollege Division, founderof the Future ProfessionalLeaders Organization andstudent board member of theRialto Unified School DistrictBoard of Education.22<strong>CSUSB</strong>Fall/Winter 20<strong>04</strong>
