Safety updateHelloI love this time of the year, aftermonths of beautiful summerweather and people complainingit’s too hot, now the majority ofpeople will moan how cold it is! It’shilarious! The topic of weather isoften used in awkward moments,to break uncomfortable silencesin the lift or maybe even form afriendship.Ever thought how the topic ofweather affects our moods andthe way we tackle each day?As Outward Bound AmbassadorJarrod Westrupp quoted hisinstructor at the recent InspireUpper Hutt Young Achiever Awards‘ You can either be cold, wet andmiserable, or just cold and wet’.This was a turning point for him -realising that he was in control ofhis attitudes on the task at hand, and most importantly his emotions. He was fortunate enough thoughto be able to identify this, witha great support mechanismaround him and a life changingopportunity such as OutwardBound. So for those who don’thave that – how do they identifychallenge ahead?Over the chilly months, it’simportant to keep an eye onour neighbours, loved ones andthose who cross our paths on aregular basis. Be healthy and takegood care; understand that somepeople have limited accessibilityto their normal places of routine, and also that relationships ofall kinds can be stressed andunder pressure when faced withchallenges. Watch around youand be attentive to those you’resurrounded by in the community.Be safe.Coming up in June, we’reoffering a third Ethical Bystanderworkshop for hospitality workersas a result of the previous twobeing so successful. This is FREEand all about recognising unsafesituations that have the potentialto lead to sexual violence andhow to address them. Interestedto know more and how this cameto our attention in Upper Hutt?Definitely worth a look! Road safety and employment updateHelloThe year is flying by like alwaysand we have been as busy as everin the Community Developmentteam. In fact we are so busy thatwe have had to get a whiteboardfor our office so that we can makean attempt at tracking eachother’s whereabouts! The last couple of months havebeen full of exciting projects andit has been incredible being partof making a difference to theUpper Hutt community. Membersof our team have been involved inopening the Trentham CommunityHouse, staging a car crash for roadsafety education, organising theYoung Achiever Awards, meetingthe Prime Minister and launchingsome fantastic ‘Working Together’groups.I have been focussing primarilyon senior drivers over the lastthree months. We have a growingsenior population in Upper Huttand it is important that theyreceive as much road safetyeducation as possible. The aimis to see less and less of our 60+population appearing in the crashstatistics over the next couple ofyears. Many of the seniors I haveconsulted with recently havetold me that they can get a bitconfused with the new Give WayRules and they need a bit of arefresher on general road rules. We have developed a Safe SeniorDriver presentation to take to olderadult groups in the community, and it gives them a goodopportunity to ask lots of questionsand clear up anything theydon’t understand. We are alsoproviding funding to Read WritePlus for them to host a road coderefresher course for seniors. Thisis completely free and is a reallyworthwhile course for people whohave not had any road safetyeducation in a few decades!Another senior driver project thatis being planned at the momentis Car Fit. This is an AA basedinitiative that has been successfullyrolled out in other parts of thecountry. The idea is that we havean event day where seniors candrive up to a checkpoint and havetrained volunteers check thatthey ‘fit’ in their car properly foroptimum safety and comfort. It isvery common to see senior driverswho have their mirrors incorrectlypositioned or their seat too close/too far from the steering wheel, which can make it difficult forthem to see other vehicles andpedestrians. Medical issues canalso affect safety whilst driving, forexample, a stiff neck can makeit difficult for people to look overtheir shoulder at a merge. All ofthese issues can be addressed atJade MercerCommunity Development Adviserthe checkpoints. Look out for theadvertisements in the Upper HuttLeader for the date of this event. My employment portfolio hasbeen just as busy and we havehad four women come off thebenefit and into paid work thisquarter. Lots of our current clientsare out and about on workexperience, which has beeninvaluable for their CV’s and also ahuge confidence boost for them.We believe that volunteeringexperience helps our clientsnetwork in the community andmeet lots of people, whilst helpingpeople in need of an extra pair ofhands.Careers Clinic is still being heldevery Thursday in the Upper HuttLibrary and myself and EricaHerron (Programmes Coordinatorin the Library) have been helpingthe general public with their CV’sand cover letters. We have alsohosted a series of job seekingseminars in the library for thepublic. We see a lot of people inCareers Clinic who have very lowself-confidence, and this affectstheir ability to find employment. The seminars were carried outby ‘motivational speakers’ andfocused on confidence buildingand self-esteem.This will be my last entry in Chatter,as I am leaving the Council, butif you want more information onanything relating to Road Safetyor Employment, then pleasecall Jess on 527 2794, or email atjessica.setu@uhcc.govt.nz until areplacement is found.I would like to thank all of thestakeholders who have supportedme so well in both my Employmentand Road Safety projects. It hasbeen a pleasure working with youall.Jade6 Chatter | Winter 2013

Activitieswere tailored to incorporate thistheme as much as possible. The week started with aperformance at Expressions Artsand Entertainment Centre byKing Homeboy, New Zealand’ssix-time Beat Boxing Championand world record holder for thelongest individual beat box. KingHomeboy was very personableand kept the small but enthusiasticcrowd enthralled during this twohour long workshop. He is ranked16th in the world for Beat Boxers, and showcased his talents well. However, there were some fineperformances by the majority ofthe event’s attendees, so he’dbetter watch out, as there aresome great up and coming beatboxers here in Upper Hutt. There were a number of activitiesavailable for the remainderof the week to young people, aged 12 to 24 years. TLC is anew programme for physically andintellectually disabled youngsters, providing young people aged 15to 24 years with the opportunity toenjoy interactive story time, poetry, crafts, and music.Judging by the numbers inattendance, Aqua Beatz, anevent held at H 2 O Xtream, wasthe most successful event withapproximately 300 young personsattending on the Friday night. The final event was ‘YoungLegends, Upper Hutt Youth DayOut’, held along Railway Ave.This event was organised andrun by the Upper Hutt YouthNetwork and special thanksneed to go out to all those whoplayed a part in getting the eventoff the ground, namely CAYAD(Community Action on Youth andDrugs), Collision, Vibe, Youthtown,Orongomai Marae, Upper HuttBaptist, Christian Fellowship UpperHutt and the Police. Their supportand organisation made for afun event. Too bad the weatherdidn’t turn it on for us, as I expectthe turnout would have been fargreater. The ninth annual Inspire 2013Upper Hutt Young Achiever Awardswas once again a cornerstoneevent. The event was held in theGenesis Energy Theatre at theExpressions Arts and EntertainmentCentre and the evening was asuccess. We received 31 outstandingnominations, and judging provedan extremely difficult task, butin the end Faa Tuuina won theCulture Award; Heldane Hardine, the Mayoral Award; Rachel Field, the Service Award; with EmilyPatterson taking out both theLeadership and Supreme Awards.Steve SmithCommunity Development AdviserPerformances on the night wereexceptional with some amazingtalent on display. Kyra Radovich,Lani Allanson and Renee Coffey allsang with gusto, Jarrod Westrupp(Outward Bound Ambassador)gave a heartfelt and inspirationalspeech, and the HeretaungaCollege Bollywood dancersrounded the evening out nicelywith great colour and flair. Formore details on this event refer tothe feature article on page 18.My colleagues within CommunityDevelopment also need a bigmention. When the chips weredown, as in when the stresslevel was increasing, everyone(especially Ceci) came to theparty and assisted greatly, sothanks team. The official launch for the UpperHutt Mature Resident’s SurveyReport took place on Tuesday28 May in the Expressions foyer, and it’s great to make the results ofthe survey available to the publicand to all those organisations thatcan assist in making Upper Hutt abetter place to live for our olderpersons. Settlement support updateHelloMother Nature has been sowonderful to us this year! We arewell into autumn and still able towear short sleeves! I am so thankfulfor the weather this year!I attend regular meetings withagencies that work in one way oranother with migrants. Recentlywe started discussing how eachagency is preparing in case ofa natural disaster. As part ofmy journey to strengthen andempower the ethnic communityof Upper Hutt, I met with three keyagencies which will be amongstthe first to offer assistance.Imagine you are in a countrywhere you do not speak thelanguage and an earthquakestrikes. Your house is damagedand water and power services arenot working. For people new toNew Zealand the language barrierand the lack of local knowledgemay make it even harder tomanage life after a disaster. Manyalso do not have the support offamily members or communityconnections. The migrants in our communitycome from every continent, withvery different terrains and naturaloccurrences. Each countrymanages disaster in variousdifferent ways. As New Zealand ison a fault line, services are veryaware, proactive and organisedin comparison to countries thatdo not suffer very often from theseevents. On Wednesday 8 May, therewas an information sessionfor newcomers to our regionpresented by NeighbourhoodSupport, Civil Defence andthe New Zealand Fire Service. It focused on being preparedin case of a disaster and theimportance of being connectedto your community. We haveall learned something from theevents in Christchurch. Therefore,I believed quite strongly that itwas important to get differentservices together to prepare ourmigrant community in case of acatastrophe.Peter Walker from Civil Defencereminded us that “in a disaster, the emergency services and yourlocal council will be extremelybusy. Help may be limited forup to three days. You could bewithout water, electricity, gas andtelephones. We cannot preventdisasters, but you can take somesimple steps to ensure you willbe able to be prepared and beable to cope. All of us must thinkahead and be prepared. Storingemergency water, knowingwhere survival items in your houseare, and having a householdemergency plan are key steps totake”. Are we actually prepared?“The first point of contact ifsomething does happen, isoften the people immediatelyaround you. So getting to knowwho lives around you is veryimportant. NeighbourhoodSupport is all about connectingneighbours and encouragingthem to communicate. It isabout building safe, resilientand caring communities”, saidKathryn Flannery, Coordinator forNeighbourhood Support forUpper Hutt. “Knowing yourneighbours empowers peopleto support each other in times ofneed”.Cecilia TitulaerSettlement Support officerOf course, emergencies are notjust of a natural type. We alsohave accidents in the home. GrantHaywood, Senior Station Officerfor the Hutt/Wairarapa Fire Area, taught us how to avoid house andrural fires, and what to do in caseone starts.A supportive community is ahealthy, happy one. Knowing thathelp is just one door away fromus means peace of mind. Knockon your neighbour’s door andsay “hi!”. If someone new movesinto your street, go and introduceyourself. Get involved withNeighbourhood Support. Organisea ‘bring a plate afternoon tea’in your driveway to meet others.Have regular meetings. Make aplan with the people who livearound you. This keeps you safe every day asyou will be protecting each other.Make it your purpose to build thecommunity around you into astrong one.CeciChatter | Winter 20139

Community Development intern updateHelloHope you are all well and backinto the swing of things. I’m prettysure everybody is in Upper Hutt- that feeling of things gettingdone has well and truly returned.Especially with the openingof new shops on Main Street, including The Open Wardrobe(a second hand clothing shop),Marleyz Cafe (a café and cateringcompany), House of Oom(made to measure dance andsportswear) and Carolyn WatkinAntiques pop up shop (homeware, giftware and women’s wear). Then there’s the opening of theTrentham Community House, andNeighbours’ Day Aotearoa 2013,and my project Maidstone Murals. The Maidstone Murals projectwas my little baby for aboutsix weeks. The purpose of theMaidstone Murals project was toprevent the possibility of graffitioccurring at the new Maidstoneturfs, as well as beautifying thearea, and exposing the UpperHutt community to various typesof art. We had three artists whoparticipated in this project; allfrom The Learning Connexion’sSchool of Art and Creativity. Some of the boxes might looka bit familiar, as one of theartists we used, Anna Jenkins, also participated in the ChorusCabinets project. The other twoartists (Stephanie Que and CoryMathis) were first timers to this sortof painting, but they did very well. There were a few hiccups, such asMother Nature, sickness, and thepaint bubbling, but we were ableto sort all of these out by 30 April, just in time for the anti-graffiti to bepainted over the top of the nowbright and beautiful cabinets. Sogo and have a look, and see whatyou think. There are also somepictures on page 23. But evenmore exciting, is that the TrenthamCommunity House Charitable Trust,or Trentham Community House(TCH), has finally OPENED! Jesshas worked alongside the Trustfor months and the opening wasjust such an amazing event. Thehouse looked wonderful, and wasabsolutely bursting with peoplewho had come to celebrate theopening. But the positive energydidn’t stop there, as there is nowa volunteer by the name of CyndiMiller who is there full time everyday. So pop in and have a look- see if there’s any way in whichyou can volunteer. Don’t everthink you can’t offer anything. Ilistened to a talk the other day byVirginia Francis (Timebank UpperHutt) and she gave us a quotefrom Edgar S.Chan (former lawyerfor the Native Americans in thelate 60’s and early 70’s) whichis “If you can breathe, you cangive something”. You never knowwhat people might need, so don’tdoubt yourself.Sian HiltonCommunity Development InternAnother cool thing that hashappened in Upper Hutt is thecelebration of “Neighbours’ DayAotearoa 2013”. To help the UpperHutt community celebrate thisday, Community Development setup a competition called “Dob inYour Neighbour”. The purpose ofthe competition was to “dob” in aneighbour who has always beenthere when you needed them, orperformed a huge ‘one off’ act ofkindness when you least expectedit. The response to the competitionshowed just how close the UpperHutt community really is. Therewere neighbours who walkeddogs because their owner hadbeen in a car accident; anotherbought over a cup of tea andhelped their new neighbour (whothey had never met before) moveinto their new house. All entrieswere really lovely to read, but wehad to pick one winner over all,and they were Tim and SharleneWateford, who look after theirneighbours’ children at any time,so that their Mum can concentrateon her business, and never ask foranything in return. For their prize, they received two tickets to a showat Expressions, four family passesfor H 2 O Xtream and a certificate. For the other entries we sentthem a letter, detailing whatNeighbours’ Day Aotearoa 2013and ‘Dob in Your Neighbour’ wasall about, sharing with them whattheir neighbour had said aboutthem, and enclosing a certificatefor being an extraordinaryneighbour. Bettycontinued reading at Tea andTales every month from 2004until retiring from libraryservice in 2012.The original purpose ofTea and Tales was toencourage a wider interestand knowledge of thereading material held in theLibrary, as well as offeringlibrary members who areless mobile an opportunityto meet on a regular basisand to chat about booksover a cuppa. These sessionsstill take place today andare included in the GoldenOpportunities programme.Council applauds Betty forher significant commitmenttowards providing socialopportunities for matureresidents. The Mayor then pointedout some interesting statisticsand trends with respect to lifeexpectancy, which parallel theneed for the provision of servicesfrom both Council and otherorganisations.Shayne Nahu, Group Managerfor the three District HealthBoards Service Integration andDevelopment Group was nextto deliver his speech. Mr. Nahumentioned that a number ofthe reports outcomes werepleasing from the Health Boardsperspective, particularly withrespect to accessibility of medicalappointments, however therewere a number of areas still towork on. Andrea Curtis, DirectorCommunity Service introduced theGolden Opportunities programme, which is to be launched atnoon, Wednesday 12 June. Thisprogramme has been developedby the Upper Hutt City Library asa direct response to the findingsof the report and from the interestshown already it promises to bea very popular programme. It willdeliver a range of social activities, such as Tea and Tales, as well ashealth and safety workshops toUpper Hutt’s mature residents.Next to speak was MaryRichardson, an Upper Hutt matureresident herself, and involved in toomany groups and organisationsto list! Mary provided a veryentertaining and heart-felt speech, which was warmly received byattendees. Mary focussed on thepositive aspects of the report andurged invited guests to do thesame.Guests were then invited, uponcompletion of the formal part ofthe evening, to network, mix andmingle, whilst listening to some finepiano playing from John Morrison, supporter of Expressions Arts andEntertainment Centre. The 2012 survey was open to UpperHutt residents over 50 and couldbe completed online or in writingon a printed survey form. 2847printed surveys were distributedthroughout Upper Hutt, includingdistribution to over 50 communitygroups, social service providers, churches, retirement villages,as well as being available atCouncil`s two libraries and at themain Council reception. Therewere 768 responses, an excellentresult.A synopsis of the findings of the2012 survey reveals that surveyrespondents generally felt safeat home, with transport, andin public. Most respondentsreported feeling healthy andhappy. However, around 5% haveexperienced some form of abuse, intimidation or victimisation in the12 Chatter | Winter 2013

last year, which is a concern. One quarter of the overall group, and almost half of the under 65sare not confident about theirfuture financial security. The vast majority of respondentsget out and about as much asthey wish. Most are in regularsocial contact with friends, familyand groups, and feel respected inthe community.Of most concern is the smallgroup (approximately 10%) ofrespondents who reported feelingsocially isolated, fearful, andaffected by depression. These findings will contribute tochanges to Council’s communityprogrammes and service delivery. As mentioned, the GoldenOpportunities initiative has alreadybeen developed at the CentralLibrary in an effort to address theissue of social isolation.Additionally, the survey resultshave formed the basis for initialdiscussions with other agenciesand community groups, in aneffort to address the main issuesraised by the report. There are exciting times ahead, providing that all agencies whohave an interest in the well-beingof Mature residents work togethertowards a common goal; that goalbeing a healthy and safe future forour mature residents. We believe this to be attainable,so let’s continue working togethertowards providing the rightenvironment for our matureresidents, as identified by thereport, to ensure that all who livein Upper Hutt find it an enjoyableplace to reside. The report can be viewed onlineat www.upperhuttcity.comGolden Opportunities — programme of eventsLaunchWednesday 12 June noonEnjoy a light lunch and aperformance by Jade Eru,followed by a quiz withrounds on Upper Hutt andbooks. Introducing ...Grandparents Raising GrandchildrenWho are we?We are a non-profit Charitable Trust, based inNew Zealand, established to support grandparents/kinwho are raising grandchildren/whanau children. Our mission is to provide support services that help toreduce stress, promote and preserve the wellbeing offamilies/whanau and maximise stability in the lives ofgrandparents, kincarers and children in circumstanceswhere the children are not being raised by theirparents. How did we start? In 1997, Diane Vivian took over the care of her small, traumatised grandchildren, and could not believe thestress she encountered.Setting about to discover what help or support wasavailable in 1999, she found there was none! Shedecided there must be many others in her position andput an ad in the paper. The phone did not stop ringing.A need had been identified. In consultation with Jill Nerheny, the Birkenhead /Northcote Community Co-ordinator, a support groupwas set up under the controllor of the CommunityFacilities Trust. A public meeting was held and theyknew they had a tiger by the tail. As the group grew, they spent many months venting, weeping, sharing andbuilding trust. The group set the objectives and a visionstatement, which now form the founding documentand guiding principles of all the Grandparents RaisingGrandchildren groups or Grandparents and Kincaregroups.Today there are many support groups throughout thecountry, reaching from the far North to Invercargill inthe South. IThe importance of laughter...The importance of laughter to ourhealth and well-being is becomingincreasingly more recognised bythe medical profession, health careproviders, as well as the population atlarge.Nothing is more personal than yoursmile and your laughter. They are yourpersonal signature and are totallyunique to you.Babies start laughing when they are tento twelve weeks old. When they laughtheir whole body jumps and bounces.Everything in their small bodies isengaged in a laughter that is innocent, pure and totally without inhibition.Children at the age of five laugh on theaverage 400 times a day. Unfortunatelythat greatly diminishes as we get older.Mature adults laugh on average four tosix times a day.If people only realised how goodlaughter is for them. It is a verypowerful force that affects the wholebody. Breath released during a heartylaugh has been measured as fast as 170miles per hour. The physical benefits of laughter arephenomenal. It stimulates the brain, the nervous system, the respiratorysystem, the hormonal system, and thebody’s muscles. In addition, it lowers blood pressure, lightens depression, strengthens theimmune system and reduces stress. For us to stay healthy, we need torelease built-up tensions. Manypeople release their tensions by doingexercise, Yoga, Tai Chi, or meditation. There is, however, a simpler way, andthat is laughter. When we laugh, even chuckle, theentire body works toward improvingyour health and wellbeing.Laughter is also a pain reliever, as ittriggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers, whichprovide a temporary distraction fromthe pain.Medical professionals have recognisedthe powers of laughter and are startingto use humour and laughter in thetreatment of patients.Laughing is totally natural. It’s organic;naturally sweet, 100% wholesome;has no chemicals; no preservatives;no artificial additives; you don’trequire batteries; it’s low in energyconsumption and high in body energygain; it’s non-fattening; it’s nonpolluting;free of cholesterol, trans-fatand saturated fat; you don’t have tojoin an expensive health club, wearridiculous spandex outfits; you canpractice it 24 hours a day; and there isabsolutely no cost.Oh, and if you’ve never heard of“Laughing Yoga” - do a google searchand give it a go - although perhaps notat work......AAGR ETP L ACETOLVEUpper Hutt City CouncilCommunity GrantsClosing Thursday 25 July 2013, 5.00 pmFor community groups either working in Upper Hutt or forcommunity organisations that benefit the residents ofUpper Hutt.Criteria for allocation of funding1. Maidstone Murals ProjectDue to the great success of the Choruscabinet murals, Council decided to have afew of our own cabinets made into artworks. All twelvecouncil cabinets at the new Maidstone turfs had makeovers fromordinary cabinets into bright and beautifulThey were transformed by three artists;Anna, Cory and Stephanie; all three of theseartists are from The Learning Connexion’sSchool of Art and Creativity.works of art.The whole project started with Jess and Ipaying a visit to The Learning Connexionand informing the artists of what theyneeded to do to be considered for the project. From this meeting we received 22 designs. Unfortunately there areonly twelve cabinets, and so only twelve designs could be picked. Seven designswere picked and a further five designs were commissioned by the Council from theartists whose designs they had already selected. From here I had to contact the successful artists, and ask them to have their new designs, paintsand brush requirements all in by 27 March. Thisdate came around and by the end of the day Ihad nearly everything I needed. I then put inan order to Resene for all the paints.I gave the artists three weeks to complete theircabinets, which most of them did. But then abump in the road came up, when all of oneartist’s cabinets’ white paint bubbled quite badly. This was because moisture had become trappedbehind the paint, which meant that the paint hadto be peeled off and re-applied. But luckily I hadset a deadline that allowed for weather or otherhold ups, and all cabinets were completed by26 April, in time for the official opening of the turfs. The whole project is now all finished and thecabinets look amazing, so go and have a look!Sian HiltonCommunity Development InternChatter | Winter 201323

Mock Car Crash - the consequences of drink driving‘Telling a parent their child has died is the hardest part of the job’ – Constable Lewis DiamondThis was the hard hitting message that was conveyedto students at St Patrick’s College in March.Community Development worked in partnership withthe Fire Service, Police, Wellington Free Ambulanceand Gee and Hickton Funeral Directors to stage amock car crash in the grounds of the college. Thestudents came out of morning assembly to a mangledcar wrapped around a tree in their front field withthree of their fellow students bloodied inside. The scene was narrated by Constable Lewis Diamond, who told a story of three young boys who hadattended a party and not organised a way to gethome. They had made the decision to drive and thiscrash was a consequence of their actions. The policewere first on the scene with the breathalyser ready forthe ‘drunk driver’.They found the passenger in the front seat had beenkilled in the accident and the passenger in the backseat had been severely injured. The Fire Servicearrived next and proceeded to cut the door and roofoff the car to gain access to the young students. Theambulance then took the injured person out of the caron a spinal board and the funeral director arrived atthe end of the scene to take away the ‘dead body’ inthe hearse. The students from St Patricks watched the scene withawe and listened quietly to the narration. Road Safetymessages were conveyed throughout the scene andby the end of the 20 minute presentation, everyonewas silent. This really indicated to us that they had beenlistening and it had an impact on them. We thoughtthat an event like this would be more effective atgetting our messages through to the young peoplethan a presentation or other similar methods we haveused in the past. The narration gave the whole scene apurpose and prevented it being just something excitingand fun for the students to watch. We had some fantastic feedback from teachers, students and other road safety partners who werepresent at the event and we will therefore be rolling itout in other schools in the region in upcoming months.Chatter | Winter 201329

It only takes one committed person to make adifference for children...Riverton, a town of 1900, is standing up as acommunity where child abuse will not be tolerated, all thanks to the passion and commitment of oneperson - Marina Seager.Marina who is the Manager at Riverton Childcare, completed the Diploma in Child Protection Studieslast year through Child Matters. The Diplomatraining highlighted how important it was that wholecommunities became trained in child protection,to allow them to both recognise and respond tochild abuse, as well as proactively work to preventchild abuse in the community. Marina decided sheabsolutely had to equip her community with the toolsto ensure children were kept safe.On the 4th and 5th March 2013, after 8 months ofwork by Marina, almost every school teacher, kindyand childcare teacher, community worker and youthworker in Riverton attended a one day workshop onrecognising and responding to child abuse. For Marina to gain the commitment to attend fromthe large majority of those working with children inthe Riverton community, was a huge achievement. The fact that so many people have this training willmean that the entire community will be not only moreaware and equipped to help, but also better ableto work together for the benefit of the children in thecommunity. How did she do it?The first thing Marina had to sort out was how shewas going to get funding for the training. Sheapproached the Riverton Community Charitable Trustwith her idea and sold them on how important it wasto have to have this training in their community. TheTrust was keen to be involved and initially agreed tofund one full day workshop for 30 people.Marina then went to the community and the hugeresponse to the training prompted her to return to theRiverton Community Charitable Trust and seek fundingfor a second day of training for another 30 people. The Trust again was keen to support this valuablecommunity initiative.Marina’s first focus of who to get to attend was theschools and childcare providers, the group who spendmost time with the children and who are best placedto recognise if a child may be at risk of abuse.Despite challenges with taking time away fromschool, Marina convinced all the teachers and somesupport staff to attend the training from AparimaCollege, Riverton Primary, Riverton Childcare, RivertonKindergarten as well as a teacher and bus driver fromIsla Bank School and a teacher from nearby ThornburySchool. Aparima College utilised a teacher only dayto send their staff on the training, and Riverton PrimarySchool split their staff into two groups and pulled inrelievers to cover the group in training each day.Marina then also contacted the local communityworker and community youth worker, who were alsokeen to attend.Further evidence of this community pulling togetheris that the Riverton Union Church, Riverton New LifeChurch and Aparima Girl Guiding provided morningand afternoon tea for the participants. This initiative is going to improve outcomes for childrenin Riverton. It is an amazing example of what acommunity can do when someone recognises a needand decides to make it happen.Congratulations Marina and the Riverton communityChild Matters would like to acknowledge the fantasticwork done by Marina Seager for her community.Marina absolutely demonstrated the child focus andcommitment of a child advocate. We would also like to congratulate each school andcommunity organisation from the Riverton communityfor recognising the importance of child protectiontraining and making it possible for all their staff toattend. We believe that Marina and the Riverton communityshould be held up as an example to other NewZealand communities of how to keep their childrensafe! Please visit our website www.childmatters.org.nz -especially if you are worried about a child - becauseone person can make a difference.32 Chatter | Winter 2013

For those of you who do not know who I am, my name is Lewis Diamond, and I am one ofthe Hutt Valley's six Community Constables, two of which including myself, are based here inUpper Hutt.Well I've been a bit busy of late with moving into my new house and now that I've got thismortgage that’s bigger then the Rimutaka Hill , I can honestly say that I will be working forever.Anyway enough about me, let's talk about what has been happening in our community crimewise.Crime trends:A community newsletter from your Upper Hutt Police teamThe following graphs are for the period February through to April.Theft from vehicles (TXC) and theft of motor vehicles (unlawful takings) still continue to plague theTrentham areas. Particularly in the train station car park, and more recently vehicles that areparked opposite the Trentham Shell Service station that are for sale.Trentham continues to be an area hit hardest for property related offending. Burglaries are beingreported as occurring mainly during working hours of Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm.Police are working on a number of initiatives to tackle this on going problem. We will continue to patrol these areas, including the monitoring of known offenders, their associatesand activities. Nine people so far have been arrested for burglaries over this particular period.Remember, if you see anything suspicious Drop or unusual, Page Fields do Here not hesitate to phone the Policeimmediately.BURGLARY30Count of Suburb252015OffenceBURGLARY1050BIRCHVILLEBROWN OWLCENTRALCLOUSTON PARKEBDENTOWNELDERSLEAHERETAUNGAKINGSLEYHEIGHTSMAIDSTONEMAORIBANKPINEHAVENSILVERSTREAMTIMBERLEATOTARA PARKTRENTHAMWALLACEVILLEWHITEMANSVALLEYSuburbChatter | Winter 201337

A community newsletter from your Upper Hutt Police teamSmart devices for Police:As some of you may have heard recently, thePolice around the country are receivingiPhones and iPads to assist with crimeprevention and general day to day policing.More then 6000 frontline Police Officers will bereceiving their smart devices in a three monthroll out period which started in April. Police staffin the Wellington District, are the first in thecountry to receive their devices. This technology has the potential to saveofficers 30 plus minutes each shift, instead ofreturning back to their station, finding acomputer and typing in information either forour noting purposes, photographs or jobs thatthey have attended. The whole idea aroundthis is to stop Police from being bound to theirstation filling out numerous forms. This will freethem up to be out policing the community, butstill being able to access critical databases, current updates and/or receive vitalinformation.I look forward to receiving mine later on thismonth.CRL - Crime Reporting line:This is a new reporting and advice line that willtake care of all routine Police inquiries over thephone - 24 hours a day, all year round. It has been operational in the Wellington Districtsince the 10th of April.Should the public wish to report a historic crimeor receive some general advice, they want tobe able to do this quickly and easily over thephone. Asking people to come down to thestation, or to contact a particular officer can betime consuming and can create unnecessarypaperwork. The CRL operators will take down all the detailsfrom people who want to report historic mattersor crime (e.g. burglary or theft), which nowmeans many jobs that were attended bythe front counter staff or by sending a responsecar, will now be dealt with by theCRL over the phone. The public will be automatically redirectedto the CRL operators when they ring on thenormal phone lines.Call 111 in emergenciesCall 111 and ask for Police when: Someone is badly injured or in danger. There's a serious risk to life or property. A crime is being committed and theoffenders are still there, or have just left. You've come across a major publicinconvenience, like trees blocking a statehighway. Any of these things are happening nowor have just happened. If you can't decide whether it's a real emergencyand you're still worried, call 111 andask us. We'll help you work out what to do.For more information on calling 111, visitwww.111.govt.nzIf it is not an emergency, phone your localpolice station.Community House:It's good to see the Community House inTrentham is up and running. The CommunityConstables will be there from 1:30 - 3:30pmevery Wednesday afternoon. However, wewon't be sitting inside the house for the twohours waiting for someone or something toturn up - we will be walking the beat andletting the neighbourhood know that thePolice are in the area ,which includes thenearby schools.Feel free to pop in and say hello.Well that’s it from me. Enjoy your autumnand winter nights, be good out there, keepwarm and stay safe.Chatter | Winter 201339
