IEEE Educational Activities

IEEE Educational Activities BoardThe IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB) recommends policies oneducational matters and implements programs specifically intended toserve the educational pursuits of IEEE members, the engineering andscientific communities, and the general public. These programs include the broad planning of IEEE educationalactivities, the development and delivery of continuing educationproducts and activities, the development of guidelines for accreditationbodies, the monitoring of accreditation activities, the coordination ofpre-university programs, and the representation of the IEEE in mattersregarding engineering education. The EAB also serves as the IEEE interface in education-related matterswith external bodies and is responsible for administration of the annualassessment paid to ABET, Inc.

University-level ActivitiesObjectives:– Improve academic curricula and ensure theirpurposeful adaptation to the changing technicaland business climate– Improve delivery and effectiveness of engineeringeducation– Improve retention of engineering and technologystudents

Retention:Real World Engineering ProjectsDevelop new projects for first year students of EE,CE and EET that…– Focus students on Real World problems with solutionsthat benefit society– Get students excited about their own, original creativesolutions– Increase student retention through personalsatisfaction and accomplishment– Enhance student accomplishment throughachievement

IEEE’s Role in Accreditation (1)IEEE seeks leadership in accreditationworldwide– Including participation in development andadministration of accrediting bodiesIEEE seeks to develop and support localaccrediting bodies where such bodies do notexist at the present time

Education about StandardsAbout 450 schools have full access to IEEEstandards through IELAbout 10 schools make use of this feature…Standards are mentioned in the ABET programcriteria but in general use of Standards in mostcurricula is sparse

IEEE Standards Education PortalA joint Standards Association / EAB project– Funded in part by the US NSF– Developed by the Standards Education CommitteeAims to provide university educators and studentswith opportunities to learn how to read standards andunderstand them

IEEE Standards in Education• A cooperative effort of the SA and EAB• A portal with State-of-the Art material onStandards Education

Pilot Program Program OverviewExtended through 2008Section, Chapter, Region, or IEEE Affinity Group contacts IEEEEA Staff about interest in organizing a local event.1-3 IEEE Expert Now courses are chosen to be offered at theevent. See IEEE Expert Now catalog for course listing.Courses are delivered to the Section / Chapter via the LMS(Learning Management System) or if online access is notavailable, then delivered on CD-ROM which must be returned.Courses can be offered simultaneously in multiple rooms andthen re-run in second half of meeting.Local experts on topics of chosen courses are recruited tospeak and answer questions at the event.

Program OverviewIEEE Educational Activities (EA) Staffprovides event organizers with feedbacksurveys for all attendees to complete.Surveys need to be returned to IEEE EA afterthe event.Attendees who complete the survey will beprovided with IEEE CEUs for attending theevent.

Getting Started1. Form a team / committee to plan a meeting centeredon IEEE Expert Now course(s)2. Set goals and objectives for the event and contactIEEE EAD to support the effort3. Allow about 8 weeks to plan and organize the event4. Create a budget for the event and determine the fee, ifany, that attendees will be charged and who will becharged (e.g. non-members vs. members)5. Consider scheduling the event to maximizeMembership promotion which would be:

Getting StartedAfter 1 March, for one-half year membership applications, orAfter 15 September, for full-year memberships, which providesthe benefit of 3 months of additional membership6. Engage a student branch(es) as an opportunity for students to a)learn, b) network with experienced engineers, and c) assist withadministration7. Identify a location for the event8. Consider the number of rooms needed—how many courses willbe offered?9. What media equipment will be needed?10. Recruit a local company for sponsorship to cover the costs ofexpenses (e.g. conference space, food, handouts)

Preparing the ProgramReview the list of available courses and choose one to threecoursesMultiple courses can be exhibited simultaneously in different roomsCourses could be presented more than once at the eventCourses are one hour in length, so also allow time for questionsAccess to selected courses will be provided online via an LMS(within North America) or on CD-ROM approximately 4 weeks priorto the eventRecruit local expert speakers on chosen topics to present thecourse and answer questionsPlan to have space to present the benefits of IEEE Membershipand make availableMembership applications and brochures and IEEE Expert NowflyersPlan to allow time after sessions for attendees to completefeedback surveys

Promoting the EventDistribute an announcement by e-mail, localnewspapers, IEEE notice servicehttp://www.ieee.org/organizations/vols/e-notice/ , and onyour websiteAllow ample time for the announcement to circulateRequest membership promotion materials fromMembership Development Supply (allow 4 weeks forshipments to reach you)http://www.ieee.org/organizations/rab/md/mdsupplyform.htmlSend a reminder to registrants within two or three daysof the event

At the EventProminently display an agenda showing the hourlybreakdown of course presentationsProvide name tags for all attendeesPresent the benefits of IEEE membership & distributemembership applicationsPhotograph the eventInvite local mediaInform attendees that in order to receive CEUs, thefeedback surveys provided need to be completed andreturned for each course presentation that they attendDistribute IEEE Expert Now flyers and/or brochuresprovided by IEEE EAD

After the EventConduct an “after action” team / committee discussion to evaluatethe success of the eventSummarize and feedback received from the attendeesPost a report and pictures from the event on your Section / ChapterhomepageReport this Section / Chapter activity into Regional Activities as ameetingPerform an “after action” review with IEEE EAD Staff whichincludes:– Return CDs of the courses (if used) to EAD within one week ofthe event– Send the completed feedback surveys to EAD Staff and thenIEEE CEUs will be issued directly to the attendees who returnedcompleted surveys– Provide EAD Staff with overall feedback on the success of theevent and also note any suggestions for improvement orlessons learned
