THE3201 S. Standard Ave., Santa ana, California 92705TIME FOR A NEW RADIATOR?WITH WARM WEATHER STRAIGHT AHEAD, IT MAY BE TIME TO CONSIDER A NEW ONESummer is on the way, and that means lots of drivingand lots of heat. In this issue of the Danchuk Updatewe show you how to keep your classic cool, and dressher up a little, with a new aluminum radiator and anelectric fan.If you are running a stock engine in your classic thenthe stock cooling system is probably all you need. Butif you are running a high horsepower engine, in stopand go traffic (like a cruise), chances are you haveexperienced some problems with cooling. Changingover to a system designed and built with today’stechnology will go a along way to keeping your carfrom limping along the side of the road looking for thenearest watering hole. Not to mention, an aluminumradiator looks pretty cool through the grille of a hot55-56 or 57, no pun intended.Note:1955-57 Chevy’s mounted their radiators in differentpositions, depending on which enginewas installed, V-8 or 6-cylinder. The V-8 radiatormounted in the V-8 position, engine side of the coresupport, and used a V-8 core support. 6-cylindercars mounted the radiator on the grille side of thecore support for clearance, since the 6-cylinderwas longer than the V-8, and used a 6-cylindercore support. We are installing an electric fan and our car usesa V-8 core support. There is not enough room betweenthe back of the radiator and the front of theengine to put the fan in the V-8 position, so we areutilizing Danchuk part #11236 conversion bracketsto move the radiator to the 6-cylinder position. This will give us the necessary clearance. If yourcar already mounts the radiator in the 6-cylinderposition, and you are running a V-8, you will notneed these brackets, as you will have plenty ofroom already.MANUFACTURER OF 1955-56-57 Chevrolet Restoration PartsD A N C H U KMADE IN THE USAYou will need these Danchuk parts:• 13270 Radiator, or use the 13274 Triple Flow• 13452 Electric Fan Kit• 11236 Conversion Brackets, 6-Cylinder Position• 11236A Fan Mounting Brackets• 044 Upper Radiator Hose• 10856 Lower Radiator Hose• 12163 Hose Clamps (4)You will also need:• Semi-Gloss Black Spray Paint• Scrap Cardboard (enough to cover the finson the radiator for protection)• Masking Tape• Hose Cutter, Razor Cutter or Carpet Knife• Flat Blade Screwdriver• 3/8" Ratchet• 7/16" and 1/2" 3/8 Drive Sockets• 7/16", 1/2" and 9/16" Open-End Wrenches• Drip Pan for Coolant1.) Drain the coolant from the radiator into the pan byopening the petcock that is located on the front of thebottom tank, grille side.2.) RADIATOR INSTALLdiator, engine side, using your 1/2" and 9/16" open-endwrenches. Workcarefully here, asyou don’t want totwist the coolerlines. Loosen thebolts on the side ofthe radiator usingyour 9/16" socketor open-endwrench and 1/2"open-end wrenchand remove them.4.) Watch for anyshims that may be between the core support and theradiator and save them. If you are running a 6-cylindercore support you may need them again. Remove theradiator and set it aside.6.) Once it is removed, put the bolts back in placeand tighten to secure the pulley back to the waterpump.7.) Remove theconversion platesfrom their package.(If you havea 6-cylinder coresupport you willnot be using them.)Hang them in aconvenient placeand paint themblack to match thecore support.8.) While you wait for them to dry, remove the newradiator from the box. Be careful, as the fins on analuminum radiator are fragile. Using your razor cuttercut two pieces of cardboard large enough to cover theradiator core. Tape them in place on both sides of thecore with maskingtape. This will helpto protect the finswhile you do theinstallation.9.) Install the conversionplates bylining the horizontalholes up withthe original holesin the core supportwhere the radiatormounts. The otherend of the plate passes through the core support openingto the front side near the grille. Install the providedbolts into place, (leave loose at first, you will tightenusing your 1/2" and 9/16" open-end wrenches).10.) Test fit your radiator. Adjust the brackets so theradiator fits without interference and tighten.5.) With the radiator out of the car, remove the stockfan from the water pump using your 1/2" socket and3/8" drive ratchet.2 (800) 648-4728 • www.danchuk.com11.) Remove the radiator and place face down on abench. Remove the cardboard from the inboard side.12.) Next, install the electric fan, which mounts directlyon the back of the radiator.13.) You will either have to fabricate brackets yourself(or use what Flex-A-Lite provides), or you can purchasethe brackets we made for the application that sandwich

RADIATOR INSTALLbetween the conversion brackets and the mountingbrackets on the radiator. A rubber seal around the frontof the fan seals against the radiator core so the fanpulls air through the core, not from around it.17.) Using yourflat blade screwdriverand twonew hose clamps, install the lowerradiator hose.Note:The stock rating for the radiator pressurecap on 55-57’s was 7 lbs. If youare using an original heater core do notinstall a higher pressure cap, as you willdamage the core. If you are running anaftermarket AC system with an updatedheater core you may be able to install a12-16 lb. cap. Check the manufacturesrecommendations.14.) Attach the bracket to the fan with the providedbolts and tighten with your 1/2" open-end wrench.15.) Being as careful as possible (a second set ofhands will help here) mount the radiator/fan assemblyin place between the conversion brackets.16.) Install the boltsand tighten usingyour 1/2" and9/16" open-endwrenches. Makesure the fan issnug against thecore but not toosnug. You don’twant to damagethe fins.18.) Then install the upper hose on the thermostathousing. It will be longer than it needs to be so line itup and trim it the proper length with your hose cutterand install with a new hose clamp. All you have left to do is wire up the fan. As there arenumerous places the electronics can be mounted anddifferent configurations for A/C and non-A/C cars, weare leaving that up to you. Follow the manufacturersinstructions, which are included in the fan kit. Our newaluminum radiator looks great, and it works really welltoo! (21 & 22) Best part is you can do this job in anafternoon. Help your classic beat the summer heatwith a new aluminum radiator and electric fan. All thecool cars are doing it.19.) Install the radiator overflow hose by pushing overthe hose bung. You can now fill the radiator with coolant, check for leaks and install a new pressure cap.Danchuk . . . “There’s No Comparison”3

Why We Think You Should Buy American!Danchuk’s Passionate about Manufacturing,Take a minute to give this some thought . . . .The fastest way to get through and out of thisfinancial crisis, this recession that our country is in,is for us to support American businesses by buyingAmerican products that are made in the UnitedStates of America.Even though our economy is deteriorating and ourunemployment rate is skyrocketing, some Americansare still going out and buying foreign cars. TheAmerican auto companies make great cars for greatprices; there is no reason to buy foreign. For thatmatter there is no reason to buy most things foreign, there are great websites that guide you to Americanproducts. All you have to do is type “Made in USA”or “Made in America” on any of the major searchengines and you will be amazed at how many sitesare set-up just for the sole purpose of pointing outAmerican made products. The time has come to support the country we all livein and love so much. If you’ve ever travelled outsideof the U.S.A then you know that most countries haveadapted this patriotism and attitude long ago. Youare hard pressed to find American made productsin other countries because they support their owncountries and local economies. They would laughat you for asking for American products, so whyshouldn’t we be laughing at them for expecting usto buy their products? Our classic American cars deserve the best. Theywere made over 50 years ago by the best craftsmenin the world and still should be. You still havea choice to buy American parts made by Americantool, die and mold makers. Danchuk Manufacturingmakes more American parts for these classics thananyone in the industry, and we are coming out withmore. We know you can sometimes purchase partsthat appear to be the same for a few bucks less, butif you really take a good look at them you’ll find thatthey don’t even come close to comparing. Take alittle time and read our “No Comparison” ads. Mostother “manufacturers” are just middlemen peddlingforeign products made who knows where. Theysell inferior parts to you for a slightly cheaper price, but you’ll soon learn they aren’t the quality or fit anAmerican classic deserves.Don’t contribute to the worst recession this countryhas ever seen since the Great Depression. Justask any company that manufactures in this countryand most will tell you that they make it almostimpossible to sell our products overseas yet theyeffortlessly flood our country with millions of inferiorand sometimes dangerous products. At this rate theimported products will eventually ruin our businessesand our country. The best way to combat this economic slide beforeit turns into an all out depression is to support thecountry we live in and love so much, “America”.Buy Quality, Buy American andGod Bless America!DANCHUK Q & AEvery GOOD Question Deserves an Answer!!Q: I just purchased a ’57 Bel Air. Can I run it on regular unleaded gasoline or should I run a leadadditive? I have had people tell me I should run an additive, but I don’t really understand why.A: Whether you should run a lead additive or not would depend on the engine in your ’57. Amongother things lead in gasoline helped to lubricate the valves and valve seats, preventing them fromburning. When lead was banned and taken out of gasoline as an additive, engine builders beganputting hardened valve seats in heads to help longevity. If your heads have been treated to hardened seats then you can run unleaded without any concerns. If they have not and you drive your car frequently you should probably consider running one of themany additives on the market. Road to El MoroccoThe El Morocco was thebrainchild of a wealthyCanadian car enthusiastnamed Rueben Allender, who wanted to turn ChevyBel Air’s into affordableversions of Cadillac’s ElDorado, so more couldknow the joy of driving astylish automobile.56 & 57 ChevroletS“The public is already brainwashed into the belief thatCadillac’s, and particularly El Dorado’s, fins representthe epitome of motordom.”bbIf you are a fan of 1955-57 Chevrolet’s then you haveprobably heard of the “El Morocco”, the rarest Chevroletever built. The El Morocco was the brainchild ofa wealthy Canadian car enthusiast named RuebenAllender. Allender was a Cadillac fan; he had ownedmany through the years and had just purchased a newEldorado Biarritz convertible. He loved the styling, luxury and, of course, the status driving a Cadillacgave you. He also realized that most people, eventhough they wanted one, just didn’t have the moneyto buy one. In 1955, when the new Chevrolet cameout, Allender thought that he could build a car thatwould look similar to an Eldorado, without the price tag,out of the new Bel Air. A smaller, easier to maneuverCadillac, one that his children could learn to drive with. And he was in a position to build it. In fact Chevroletactually helped Allender with his project when theycame out with the 1956 Bel Air, which looked evenmore like the Cadillac he was trying to emulate thanthe 1955 model he had originally thought to use.Allender made his fortune buying and selling warsurplus textiles after WWII. As his business grewhe started buying up surplus automotive seat covers, headliners, rubber mats and carpeting as well. By1955 he had branched out into surplus automotive trim, hardware and weatherstripping. The R. Allender Companypurchased so much product that they purchasedanother new 3 story warehouse on Van Dyke Avenuein Detroit, near Jefferson Avenue in which to store itall. In fact, the majority of the parts Allender usedto build the El Morocco came from this warehouse, which also served as the production plant.12 (800) 648-4728 • www.danchuk.comAllender hired, according to an article written in 1990by Jerry Heasley and published in Special InterestAuto Magazine, an experienced tool and die makernamed Robert Thompson in early 1955. Allenderput Thompson in charge of the El Morocco projectand Thompson designed and engineered both the1956 and 1957 editions. The name El Morocco waschosen for two reasons. El Morocco was the nameof a popular Manhattan nightspot, so it was recognizable, and the name El Morocco was very similar toEldorado. This meant that only a few letters wouldneed to be cast to make Eldorado badges into ElMorocco badges. The donor cars, which were purchased from Detroit’sDon McCoullagh Chevrolet at $50.00 over cost, hadno modifications made to the frame, drive train orinterior so the El Morocco was identical to a ‘56 Belairin that respect. The outside of the car, however, wasa different story. In keeping with the Eldorado theme, the El Morocco had Cadillac Eldorado like tailfinsmade from the new wonder material, fiberglass. Aman named Cyril Olbrich, an experienced fiberglassfabricator who worked for a local Detroit company,Creative Industries, made the molds for the tailfins.Olbrich was also hired to attach the fiberglass finsto the Bel Air body and mold them into place. Allthe side stainless was custom made in Allender’swarehouse by Robert Thompson and the few partsthat Thompson couldn’t make, or find in Allender’sstock, were fabricated by Wettlaufer EngineeringCo, another local Detroit company who specializedin automobile body trim.

The 1956 El Morocco used a Kaiser-Frazer horn buttonfor it’s hood medallion and ’55 Willys dash panels forthe “saddle” door top trim. 1955-56 Dodge Coronettaillights mounted side by side above dummy exhaustports gave the rear a look that closely resembledthe Biarritz. The front bumper included fiberglassreinforced ‘Dagmars’, so named after a famousbuxom blonde from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, madefrom reversed ’37 Dodge headlight shells. The rearfins were edged with trim that was sourced from a1955 Ford. To top it all off, Plexiglas extensions wereadded to the ‘56 Bel Air Hood bird’s wings to createa hood ornament unique to the El Morocco and themodified block script “El Morocco” was added tothe hood and deck lid. Hubcaps that mimicked theEldorado’s “Sabre Spoked” wheels were added toround out the look. The price of the 1956 version of the El Morocco wasaround $3250. With a Continental Kit, and many ofthem were so equipped in classic 50’s style, wasaround $3400. Roughly $1000 more than a similarlyequipped Bel Air and well under the price of a Cadillac. This impressed Motor Trend writer, Don MacDonald, and he wrote in the September 1956 edition “Thereshould be ready acceptance. The public is alreadybrainwashed into the belief that Cadillac’s, andparticularly El Dorado’s, fins represent the epitomeof motordom. Unfortunately, many believers can’tafford the real thing; Eldorado sales do not reflecttheir true popularity. We can’t help but agree withAllender that a Chevrolet-based miniature at $3250complete……should be a hot seller.”Problem was, it wasn’t a hot seller. Even though theprice was only $1000 more than a comparable Bel Airthat $1000 was a lot of money in those days and manywho could afford the El Morocco’s Cadillac styling couldafford the real thing. Allender originally thought hewould be buildingup to 10 ElMorocco’s perday. In reality, there wereonly 20 or, dependingon thesource, only 101956 modelsc o m p l e t e d :a mixture ofhardtops andconvertibles.Regardless ofthe actual numbersonly 1 car,a convertible, still exists today. For the 1957 edition, Allender gave Thompson the taskto design and engineer a totally new El Morocco “kit”for the 1957 Chevrolet that would resemble Cadillac’snew Eldorado Brougham. To reach this end the modificationsfor the ’57 El Morocco would be much moreextensive than for the 1956 model. To start, the hoodrocket assemblies were removed, the hood shaved, and the holes filled with scrap steel. All the side holesfor the 1957 side stainless were leaded in. The frontgrill was replaced by an egg-crate design made fromDanchuk . . . “There’s No Comparison”stainless steel and relocated turn signals were added tothe front bumper. The sides were treated to L-shapedmoldings with integral dummy air scoops that lookedlike they had come off an actual Brougham along withthe chrome plated brass lower quarter panels. But the rear of the car is where it really got interesting. The rear tailfins, integral rear bumper and roll pan, provided by Wettlaufer Engineering, made the rearof the ’57 El Morocco look so close to the Cadillac itwas easy to mistake one for the other, at least from adistance. The fins included small red taillights from a1956 Plymouth and the edge moldings looked like theywere taken from a real Brougham. The bumper/rollpan included two small lights, but they were dummieslike the side air scoops, as well as some additional13

The name El Morocco was chosen for two reasons.El Morocco was the name of a popular Manhattannightspot, so it was recognizable, and the nameEl Morocco was very similar to Eldorado.chrome plated brass material, like was used on thequarters, on each side of the license plate recess. The front hood and rear trunk lid were finished offwith the original V-8 “Vee” and the same El Moroccobadges that were used in 1956. To bring it all togetherbuyers could choose from the same wheel coverused in 1956 or a new “Triple Spoked” design thatmimicked the Cadillac. As in 1956, the frame, drive train and interior wereexactly like what came original in the donor cars. The main difference between 1956 and 57 was thatthe lower cost 210 models were used as donors in1957, except for convertibles, the top of the line BelAir models were used in 1956. All cars used the V-8283 engine with a powerglide transmission. All thecars came equipped with a radio and heater.Production figures are pretty consistent betweensources for 1957. The total number of cars producedwas fourteen (actually all the sources say 16, but whenyou look at the numbers of each model, that doesn’tadd up). Ten 4-door hardtops, two 2-door hardtopsand 2 convertibles. The transformation from Chevroletto El Morocco was actually more suited to the 4-doormodels as the Cadillac Brougham was, of course,a 4-door itself. Price wise, the hardtops retailedbetween $2,750 and $2,800 and the convertiblecame in at $2,950. These prices were actually lessthan their 1956 counterparts and only $500 morethan a regular Chevrolet Bel Air.The PoorMans CadillacRegardless of the price it was too late. The factwas that R. Allender and Company were not makinganything on the cars and when a plan to sell themthrough selected Chevy dealerships fell throughAllender, who was in the stages of planning a 1958edition, scrapped the project.Of the original 14 cars built in 1957, only six areknown to exist today. Two 4-door hardtops, two2-door hardtops and 2 convertibles. One of theconvertibles is owned by Jay Leno, you can goto his website and see pictures, and three are onDisplay at Dick Clarks American Bandstand Theaterin Branson, Missouri, one 2-door hardtop, one 4-door hardtop and one convertible. The collection inBranson is touted as the “worlds largest collectionof 1957 automobiles” and can be seen for a smalldonation on the facilities ground floor. Other photosof the 1956 and 1957 El Morocco can be found by asearch on Google or Yahoo. So what are they worth, these El Morocco’s? Almosttotally ignored by Cadillac collectors those who knowof them in the Tri-5 crowd consider them the Holy Grailof Chevrolet’s. In August of 2007 a 4-door hardtop wasput up for sale at the Monterey Sports and Classic CarAuction. Before the car hit the block the estimatedsale price was put at between $75,000 and $120,000.It sold for $77,000. In comparison a 1957 Bel Air 4-door hardtop in comparable condition would sell atauction for between $20,000 and 25,000.14 (800) 648-4728 • www.danchuk.comIt is curious to note that many stories about Allender’sEl Morocco state that Chevrolet, because they soldhim cars at $50 over dealer cost, approved of theendeavor. This is not the case. Were they concernedabout him? Well he was selling the El Morocco asa brand new car, not a modified car. But consideringhow many vehicles he put out we find it hard tobelieve that Chevrolet would care, at least in thosedays. It has been written, however, that at least someof the upper echelon of Chevrolet was interested inAllender’s project. In the winter of 1956 two menstrode into the office of R. Allender and Companyasking to see the new El Morocco. El Morocco? Yes,they had seen Allender’s creation in an article in thepaper, and now they wanted a real look. Apparentlythat was all they wanted for as soon as they hadseen the car they seemed satisfied and quietly leftthe building. Reuben Allender raised his eyebrowson recognizing the face of one of the men from awedding announcement in the newspaper. He wasJohn Z. Delorean. One thing we know Deloreanwould have been surprised to learn is that through abit of “finagling” the first 1956 El Morocco was titledin the state of Michigan as an “El Morocco”, not aChevrolet. How Allender pulled that off one can onlyspeculate…but it is the only time that a Chevroletwas not titled as a Chevrolet in history.bb
