We are veryexcited about this install since it is one ofour proudest parts. We have been manufacturingthe 1957 Side Panel Inserts forover two decades now. These weren’t thefirst part that we manufactured but theywere certainly one of the hardest to dateto figure out. There are so many processesinvolved to get these babies right it isjust mind boggling that Chevrolet did it45 years ago. It is one of those processesthat is the reason for this installationarticle. We have just recently improved,or should I say perfected, the forming diethat creates the correct compound bendin the back of the panels so that they snugup to the rear of the quarter panels. Weare really excited about this and thoughtthe timing might be right to swap thetwenty year old set out on our own 1957Convertible.RemovalStep 1.) The first thing we did is appliedthe 3M masking tape on the paint directlyabove the mouldings. The reason forthis is that sometimes when you removestubborn mouldings you may have towiggle and/or pry them a bit to get themloose and we certainly don’t want to riskscratching or chipping the paint. 2.) Thisstep may not totally be necessary but werecommend lifting the car up a bit andremoving the rear tires for easier accessto the moulding nuts. Always be sure touse jack stands when lifting and supportinga car. 3.) Remove the rear seat. Firstremove the lower cushion then the upper.4.) Using the Phillips head screwdriver,remove the rear quarter window trim. 5.)Using the door handle clip removal tool(Danchuk part #637), remove the windowcrank handle and door handles if you havea four door. Next, remove armrests anddoor panels. 6.) Remove access panelsusing the Phillips head screwdriver. Somepeople have removed the access panelsover the years and not replaced them,so don’t be too surprised if they arealready gone. 7.)Now reach insidethe access holeand remove themoulding nutsusing the 3/8”socket or wrench.8.) Remove therest of the nuts from the moulding. Theseare accessiblethrough thewheel opening.Now removethe lowermoulding. 9.)Remove thefront uppermoulding. Thisshould be a breezesince you have alreadyremoved the nutsfrom inside the quarterpanel. If, however,there are push-in clipson the moulding, carefullyuse your puttyknife to gently pry the moulding off at theContinued on page 7From the Gm...Is it hot out or what? The flaws varya bit, some are incredibly minorwhere as some may be a blisteror scratch on the chrome. We doour best not to put a part on salethat is unusable. Most of the flawsare cosmetic and you could repairthem if you so choose. Due to thesmall quantities of some of theseparts we have purposely sent outthis Update weeks before the saleactually starts. There’s some greatstories out there about these classics, and we truly enjoy hearingabout their transformations from rust buckets to road rockets.This issue we want to share with you a story we thought was aperfect example of literally going from a rats nest to a “real ‘57Chevy”. In his own words, owner Jim Stewart of Spring Valley,Arizona tells us the story of his Chevy metamorphosis.Hi Friends,While driving to a job one morning in Dewey, Arizona, I spotted this pile ofdebris beside the road. It turned out to be a verylarge pack rats’ nest. It was a pack rats’ nest coveringa car engine. And there was a car attachedto the engine and the pack rats’ nest!On interviewing the owner, it was disclosed thatthe car had sat there 28 years - with no wheels.and there She sat...and sat...and sat...Brush was growing up under a couple of fendersand the engine.I was told by the owner that many people hadtried to buy the car. I tried four times andfinally we made a deal. They couldn’t find thetitle and had to get a duplicate. They handed me100 keys and said “Good Luck”.Got some wheels and tires at a junkyard and had awrecker haul it out. Then it went to the back yard to bestripped. The interior was gutted and all the stainlessand chrome came off. Then to the engine shop for enginerebuild, transmission, radiator, starter, generator,brake system, and all electrical - and a couple thousand other little items.Then to the body shop - really taken apart.Then to the glass shop andfinally upholstery.Moving rightalong...the nest...And now what we have is a REAL 1957 Chevy!1957 Side Panel InstallationContinued from front pagepush-in clip point. 10.) Removethe upper long moulding.You will need to use theputty knife for this moulding asall the clips except one are ofthe push-in style. The one thatis not is the very rear. Sometimesthemouldingcan be slidback andwill releasefrom theclip, butif youcan get it off it may be easier.When you remove this mouldingstart prying at the front ofthe piece and work your wayto the rear. 11.) Remove thelocating screws that are attachingthe side panel to the body.12.) There is usually some kindof silicone or putty on the backof these panels so it may benecessary to pry the panel offwith the putty knife. 13.) Lastbut not least, clean the surfacethoroughly in preparation forthe new panels.InstallationStep 1.) We like to use a littlesilicone on the back of thepanel for anextremelytight seal. Thisis not necessarythoughand you don’tneed to do it.If you do decide to use siliconemake sure that you apply itin a way that will not trapwater under the panels, forinstance vertical lines or smalldots. 2.) Place panel on thebody and attach to the locatingholes. Be sure to leavebetween 1/8” & 3/16” of paintshowing at the rear of the panelbetween the taillight housingand the panel like original.If the panel lifts slightly off thebody at the rear you can applya small dot of silicone to holdit perfectly in place. Rubberpads and a clamp come in realhandy for this. 3.) Once youare satisfied with the positionand fit of the panel, reinstallthe mouldings. Start with theupper long moulding then theupper curved or small moulding.When those are on installthe lower moulding. Makesure it is positioned how youwant it before fully tighteningthe nuts on the back side. 4.)Once that is all done, reinstallthe interior door panels,handles, armrests, window trimand lastly the rear seat.I hope this article was clearand easy to understand. Itonly took us a few hours andreally made a night and daydifference on the side of thecar. We offer our panels witheither a brass plated goldfinish on the Bel Air and crestor with our forged aluminumgold anodized. We prefer theforged aluminum with anodizebecause we feel it is moreoriginal and better matchesthe front and rear vees. Thatis totally your preference sinceGM did it both ways back inthe day.
