foundation newsWe all lost a true friend and supporteron February 6th with the passing ofVera Ginn, who died at home on her98th birthday.At the time of her death, Vera wasserving as honorary chair of the DorothyLove Capital Campaign, and the experienceand insight that she brought wasinvaluable.Never one to seek recognition forherself, Vera remained modest, quietlydirecting funds to worthy organizationslike Dorothy Love without fanfare orpublicity. Even at the age of 96 as a leadcontributor toward the construction ofDorothy Love’s new front concourse andentryway, she chose to use the namingopportunity to honor the memory of herparents, Cecil H. and Martha M. Ginn.And because of her lead gift, DorothyLove was able to move forward with thismuch-needed expansion. The new frontconcourse will allow visitors to locate themain entrance easily, create room foradditional meeting and office space, andprovide a smooth traffic pattern from thereception area to areas within the mainbuilding. A new gift shop and lounge willserve as a wonderful place for residentsand visitors to congregate.A long-time resident of Sidney – havingmoved there in 1924 – Vera’s career centeredon elementary education as both ateacher and a principal. After her father’sdeath she owned and managed the GinnGrain Company in Sidney for severalyears until she sold the business.Philanthropic service was a naturalpart of life for Vera. She annuallyattended the national convention of DeltaTheta Tau, a national philanthropicsorority. Vera remained active in theSidney community as well, serving on theBoard of Directors for the Houston GrainElevator. And in December of 2005, shewas honored with the presentation of her80-year pin as a member of the PleiadesChapter, Order of the Eastern Star.Throughout her lifetime, Vera gavenearly $850,000 to Dorothy Love, andmore than $500,000 of that total wasgiven through eleven separate CharitableGift Annuities. For her giving to DorothyLove, Vera is counted as a member ofthe Trustees’ Roundtable, the NamedEndowment Circle – Program Level, andVera Ginnthe Living Legacy Society. She felt mostpassionate about supporting the Life CareCommitment, and spiritual life initiativessuch as the construction of the chapeland the spiritual life endowment. Hersupport of Dorothy Love with charitablecontributions, often in memory of herparents, has provided countless benefits toits residents.Vera gave joyfully of her energy,expertise and personal resources to makelife better for us all. Although we willmiss Vera, her legacy of giving and allshe inspired and nurtured throughouther lifetime will live on in our hearts andcommunity for many years to come.10
