<str<strong>on</strong>g>European</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Recommendati<strong>on</strong>s</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stabilizati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Steel</strong> Structures by Sandwich Panels2.3 DesignerAdditi<strong>on</strong>al informati<strong>on</strong> about <strong>the</strong> sandwich panels and <strong>the</strong> fastening needed for <strong>the</strong>stabilizati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> supporting structure shall cover <strong>the</strong> rotati<strong>on</strong>al stiffness and <strong>the</strong> in-planeshear stiffness, and <strong>the</strong> strength <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sandwich panels and c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>s and <strong>the</strong> shear stiffnessand shear resistance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fasteners used to fix <strong>the</strong> sandwich panels to <strong>the</strong> supportingstructure. The designer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sandwich panels shall verify <strong>the</strong> resistance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sandwich panelsand fastenings to meet <strong>the</strong> requirements given by <strong>the</strong> primary loads to <strong>the</strong> panels and by <strong>the</strong>additi<strong>on</strong>al loads caused by <strong>the</strong> stiffening <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> single steel members. The designer shallprepare drawings which show <strong>the</strong> types, materials and dimensi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sandwich panels, and <strong>the</strong> types, materials, dimensi<strong>on</strong>s and positi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> all fasteners and possibly <strong>the</strong> order to befollowed in installing <strong>the</strong> fasteners <strong>on</strong> site. He shall define <strong>the</strong> tolerances to be fulfilled infastenings. The design shall be based <strong>on</strong> relevant nati<strong>on</strong>al and <str<strong>on</strong>g>European</str<strong>on</strong>g> standards andtechnical approvals. The designer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> steel structure needs to know <strong>the</strong> properties <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sandwich panelssuch as <strong>the</strong> allowed span length in l<strong>on</strong>gitudinal directi<strong>on</strong>, required support width, shearstiffness, and torsi<strong>on</strong>al restraint, and <strong>the</strong> required type, number and positi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> fasteners. Heshall define <strong>the</strong> stiffness needed to support <strong>the</strong> supporting structure against buckling failure <strong>on</strong>an acceptable level. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> fasteners might affect <strong>the</strong> load-bearingcapacity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sandwich panel such as <strong>the</strong> support reacti<strong>on</strong> capacity and <strong>the</strong> reducti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>wrinkling stress at <strong>the</strong> intermediate supports under uplift loadings. Thus, <strong>the</strong> designer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sandwich panels shall know <strong>the</strong> structural requirementsresulting from <strong>the</strong> stabilizati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> supporting structure and possibly, based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> steel members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> supporting structure, re-check <strong>the</strong>resistance <strong>of</strong> sandwich panels and fastenings. At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> design process full assembly documentati<strong>on</strong> shall be prepared and deliveredto <strong>the</strong> owner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> building and/or to <strong>the</strong> partner, who is resp<strong>on</strong>sible for <strong>the</strong> assembly.2.4 Manufacturer <strong>of</strong> sandwich panelsThe sandwich panels used as stabilizing elements shall fulfil <strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>of</strong> EN14509 [24] shown by <strong>the</strong> CE-mark <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> product (see chapter 1.2) and <strong>the</strong> applicati<strong>on</strong> rangegiven in this document. Depending <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> case and practice, <strong>the</strong> manufacturer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sandwichpanels shall provide additi<strong>on</strong>al informati<strong>on</strong> about <strong>the</strong> stiffness and resistance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fasteningsor about <strong>the</strong> shear stiffness and torsi<strong>on</strong>al restraint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stabilizing system. The possibledocument with additi<strong>on</strong>al informati<strong>on</strong> compared to that given in CE marking according to EN14509 shall be based <strong>on</strong> test results and calculati<strong>on</strong>s.2.5 InstallerBefore starting <strong>the</strong> assembly, <strong>the</strong> installer shall perform <strong>the</strong> following c<strong>on</strong>trols:• Check and verificati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> documentati<strong>on</strong> for assembly: relevant drawings, list <strong>of</strong>fastening elements, details for fixing, assembly and fixing sequence50
