Units arenormally offered over 10 evening sessions,usually 5.30-8.00; or 5 Saturdays, usually10.00-4.00.The programme comprises:• Two mandatory Core Units (total 60credits)And either:• Two Option Units (60 credits) and aDissertation (60 credits)Or• Three Option Units (90 credits) and aReport (30 credits)Core Units:The core units are mandatory and focuson key areas of inclusive education. Theyare offered in the Autumn term:• Understanding inclusive educationSaturdays (probably 29/09, 13/10, 03/11,17/11, 01/12: dates to be confirmed)• Research for inclusive educationTuesdays (probably 25/09 – 04/12 withbreak at half term: dates to be confirmed)Option Units:A choice of Option Units is available inthe Spring term, focusing on areas ofspecial educational needs where we canoffer particular expertise. For examplethese may include:• Introduction to the autism spectrum• Specific learning difficulties (dyslexia):developing inclusive practice• Behaviour, emotional and socialdifficulties: developing inclusivepractice• Inclusive teaching for bilingual learnersStudents who for academic or personalreasons are unable to successfullycomplete the 180 credits required for theMasters award may exit with thecompletion of 60 or 120 creditsrespectively (achieved through taughtelements) and be awarded a <strong>Postgraduate</strong><strong>Certificate</strong> or <strong>Postgraduate</strong> Diploma in thesubject area. It’s also possible to studyjust one Unit per year.AssessmentEach Unit is assessed through a writtenassignment equivalent to 5,000 words;this may include alternative formats suchas a presentation. Each assignment isdesigned to be flexible to enable you tofocus your research on an area that ismost relevant to you. Assignments arenormally submitted 6 weeks aftercompleting tuition, in January or May.‘Research Project’ and ‘Dissertation’ arelonger and are submitted in September.Study SupportEach Unit has a website within our virtuallearning environment, Moodle. Thiscontains all your learning materials plus awealth of additional resources you canaccess from home.The Institute of Education at ManchesterMetropolitan University is fortunate inhaving a dedicated education library oncampus, offering a modern, relaxedlearning environment which is kept up-todatewith books and journals in the areaof inclusive education and specialeducational needs.

The Core Units includespecialist briefings on information skillsand assignment writing.Accrediting Prior Learning• Masters credits in a relevant area ofeducation from another University canbe recognised, within ManchesterMetropolitan University regulations• Students with PGCE accredited atMasters level can have up to 60 credits• SENCOs who have been awardedPGCert (NASENCo) have 60 credits• Specialist teachers with a <strong>Postgraduate</strong><strong>Certificate</strong> or Diploma in an area ofSEN can have their credits recognisedtowards MA• Experienced teachers can be awarded30 credits for ‘Accreditation of PriorExperiential Learning’ (APEL) bycompleting an APEL Unit including awritten assignment• Senior teachers who have completedNPQH can be awarded 60 credits bycompleting an application including awritten assignmentFeesFor 2012/13 fees are £660 per 30 creditUnit, or £1320 for two Units for the year.Fees can be paid by instalment.Schools or other employers can sponsortuition fees in full or part. This isexceptionally good value for schools orcolleges, with teachers studying in theirown time researching issues of value tothe school with the support of theUniversity.The Department for Education has aScholarship Fund to pay tuition fees forMasters level Continuing <strong>Professional</strong><strong>Development</strong> for teachers, with SEN asa priority area.
