TOURISM
The Moravskoslezský kraj (Moravian-Silesian Region) is located in the easternmost part
of the Czech Republic. It is a very diverse and varied region, which can offer visitors
many attractions. The region is divided into six main tourist areas, each of which has
its own specific character. The territory borders on two alpine areas: The Beskyds,
with the highest point at Lysa hora, with picturesque nature and a complex of more
than twenty wooden churches, which rank among mediaeval rarities; and the Jeseník,
with the highest point of Moravia and Silesia, Praděd, with virtually pristine nature.
The Poodří, with the enchanting river bed of the Odra River, contains a colourful array
of chateaux, castle ruins and urban monumental reservations. The districts of Ostravsko
and Karvinsko enjoy an exceptional character provided by a tradition of deep mining
of black coal and metallurgy. Unique technical monuments located here are evidence
of this fact. We also find here relatively large numbers of religious jewels. Těšínské Slezsko,
with its atmospheric wooden buildings, folk customs and faces may be remembered
as the border between the past and present. Opavské Slezsko, with its broad palette
of attractions and monuments, is attractive particularly for its chateaux, historical
cities and also military-technical monuments from the unique fortification system that
originated in the years 1935–1938. The centre of this district is the city of Opava with
its historical core and the oldest museum in the Czech Republic.
Everyone can truly find his/her own way in the Moravian-Silesian Region.
The chateau acquired its original floor plan, shaped like a quarried, nearly circular section and
a superb arcade courtyard, during renaissance modifications in the years 1556–1608. After the
Battle of the White Mountain, the Bruntál chateau was acquired by the Order of Teutonic Knights.
It was altered to its current Baroque appearance by the architect F. A. Neumann in the years
1766–1769. Open to the public are the halls, rooms and representative spaces of the chateau
with preserved Rococo wall paintings is furnished with original furniture, a library and armoury.
Preserved in the interiors are richly decorated Rococo stoves. A park is adjacent to the chateau
building, part of which includes a salla terrena. Open to the public.
A cluster of wooden buildings from the years 1891–1898 designed by the architect Dušan Jurkovič
in the spirit of Wallachian and Slovak folk architecture (Libušín with old Pustevna, Maměnka
and bell tower). Among these unique buildings are the interiors of Libušín with three Secession
chandeliers, a sideboard, china cabinet, and clocks. Placed around the tables are one hundred
This concerns a significant document of Silesian brick Gothic architecture. The building was
established in the years 1390–1394 on an octagonal floor plan. Today it bears the name – Swedish
chapel - acquired in connection with the use of the building by the Swedes in the period of the
Thirty Years' War for Protestant divine service. Preserved in the interior of the chapel are high-
quality, very valuable wall paintings from the 1 st half of the 15 th century This thematically unique
This consists of a triple-nave Gothic cathedral architecture from whitewashed masonry, the
building of which began around the year 1300 and was completed with the realisation of the “old”
sacristy in 1361. The church, with its monumental mass and primarily its twin spires of different
heights, markedly appears in the panorama of the city. Primarily Silesian artists participated in the
decoration of the interior. Paintings in the presbytery were painted by the Moravian Jesuit Ignác
Raab; the marble tomb of Karel of Liechtenstein in the presbytery is the work of the Opava sculptor
Jan Jiří Lehner from the middle of the 18 th century; the author of the main altar was the sculptor
J. Schubert; and the oil paintings are the work of F. I. Leichner. Open to the public.
MIChAl MIne In OSTRAvA (důl MIChAl v OSTRAvě) F10
This represents an extraordinarily valuable authentic industrial area along construction and technical
lines. The essential influence on the form of the mine was the reconstruction completed in 1915,
which was realised according to the design by the architect of the Vienna school, František Fiala.
Part of the area is the unique collection of electrical mining machinery and compressors from
the beginnings of electrification. Operations in the Michal Mine were terminated in 1993. The
concept of its memorial protection and renewal is directed at the preservation of the entire area
in the form of the period of operation, as if the people who worked there had just stopped
yesterday and left everything in its place. Open to the public.
nOvý JIčín i8
The beginnings of Nový Jičín lay in the 13 th century, even though municipal privileges were
granted to it during the time of Jan of Luxemburg in 1313. The pride of the city is the regular,
four-sided square lined with arcades, which following renovation, are the apex of mediaeval
municipal urbanism here. In particular, the two-storey municipal house “Old Post” from 1563
is worth mention. The centre of the square is graced by a plague column from the beginning
of the 18 th century and a stone fountain with sculptures of dancing peasants in German herder
clothing. Another landmark is the Žerotín chateau, headquarters of the Muzea Novojičínska (Nový
Jičín Museum), whose exhibits provide an overview of the development of hat-making fashions
and the history of the city. www.novyjicin.cz
PříBOR h9
As a market village established by Příbor count Arnold of Hückeswat in the 2 nd quarter of the
13 th century. The town hall was first mentioned in 1564. Over the course of the Thirty Years'
War, the city was filled several times with soldiers of the warring sides. The municipal houses
in the centre are predominantly Renaissance with Baroque modifications. Dating from the period
of the founding of the city is the Gothic parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin with
a monumental spire. At the end of the 17 th century, the Piarists built an adjacent dormitory here,
which today houses a museum and permanent exhibition devoted to the celebrated native
Sigmund Freud. www.pribor-mesto.cz
The city, about which first written mention dates from 1359, today is called the “Moravian
Bethlehem” for its picturesque nature and unique collection of municipal folk architecture.
The city is dominated by the ruins of the Štramberk castle with the round tower called Trúba.
The picturesque square is lined with masonry houses with elements of late Baroque and Empire,
in adjacent streets again stand timbered cottages with high stone foundations. These buildings
from the 18 th and 19 th centuries are an architectonic rarity for their irreplaceable character in the
Czech Republic. www.stramberk.cz
Originally this mining location, with foundries and quicklime production, was first mentioned
in 1339 as a small town. Today this village is interesting in that timbered cottages have been
preserved to this day. This involves single-storey timbered houses covered by ridged roofs
(later by asbestos cement or tin) and with the marked tendency toward stone foundations.
www.hermanovice.cz
First mention of the village dates from 1377. Located in the village are two rows of facade oriented
houses with regular developed areas. This involves single-storey, predominantly masonry residential
as well as economic buildings from the turn of the 18 th and 19 th centuries. The local settlement
can be classified within the eastern Sudeten type. One characteristic is the vertical articulation
of the roof space in which the lower floor was dirt and the upper floor served as a granary.
TOURISMUS
ältesten Museum in Tschechien.
in Tschechien. www.stramberk.cz
