Report | AFS Spring ConferenceRising Above the EconomyBy Edward C. Gregor, Editorial Board ChairmanDr. David Pui addresses session at American Filtration & Separations Society Spring Conference.Even though the country is in aneconomic downturn, a snapshotof the American Filtration& Separations Society Spring Conferencein Minneapolis, May 4th-7th,made it look like the industry was experiencingboom times. According toSuzanne Sower, AFS Executive Manager:“The 2009 and 22nd AnnualSpring Conference was the best attendedsince 2004 when the AFShosted the World Filtration Conferencein New Orleans. We feel attendancewas a direct result of the educationalknowledge exchange and networkingrelationship opportunities offered bythe AFS to its membership. Underthese market conditions, individualand companies can be very choosywhere they spend their money, so weare thrilled with the industry supportof the AFS.”The number of conference sponsorshipsand exhibitors were also upover recent years, a fact not lost on Dr.Barry Verdegan, AFS chairman, whocommented, “Attendance and participationwith conference sponsorshipsand exhibitors from many of the industry’sleading companies, combinedwith the strength of the short coursesand technical program produced ourstrongest and best attended conferencein recent memory.”TECHNICAL PROGRAMThe conference began with theeight half- and full-day short courses, taught by many of the industry’s leadingtechnologists and most knowledgeablemembers.Subjects offered included: Basics inLiquid Filtration & Separations; BasicGas/Air Filtration & Separations; AdvancedEngine Filtration; AdvancedTopics in Filter Testing; Microfiltration6 • August 2009 • www.filtnews.comMembranes; Ultrafiltration Membranes;Nonwoven Air FiltrationMedia; Electrostatic Charging and Electretsfor Air Filters; and Liquid FiltrationTesting Basics. Filtration | Activated CarbonsGRPD Comparison of Unusedand Used Activated CarbonsBy Henry Nowicki, Wayne Schuliger, George Nowicki and Barbara ShermanGranular activated carbons(GAC) are the best availabletechnology (BAT) to purifyand protect global drinking water supplies.GAC can be manufactured from awide variety of natural resource materials.Coal and coconut shells are the dominantraw materials to manufacture GACfor the drinking water application (1). Allactivated carbons are not the same. Thisvariable family of activated carbons havefine micro-, meso-, and macro- porestructures. The micro and meso pores aremost useful for accumulating water contaminants(1). These sized pores can berevealed with the Gravimetric Rapid PoreSize Distribution (GRPD) test method.Over the last nine years PACS Laboratorieshas provided many applications forGRPD (2-17). This paper presents a newapplication for GRPD. GRPD is nowbeing used to compare the difference betweenunused and used GAC in drinkingwater applications and other applicationsto reveal which pores are filled with adsorbates.By unused GAC we mean startingGAC, which has never been usedbefore. By used GAC we mean unusedGAC, which has been through a specificapplication, such as drinking water or industrialwastewater applications.Chart AWHAT PORES ARE USED?For a potential or actual activatedcarbon user it is important to knowwhat pores (adsorption spaces) areneeded in the specific application. There are a myriad of different activatedcarbons and applications. Mostactivated carbon users do not knowwhat pores that are used in their applications.Today it is possible for users todetermine what pores are needed.Knowing what pores are filled in theapplication provides the opportunity toselect a carbon with more of the poresthey need. With more pores in the application, the user can expect the finishedwater to be improved and providethem with longer service times.GRPD RESULTS EXECUTIVE SUMMARYFour client samples (Chart A) ofgranular activated carbon (GAC) werefully characterized using the GravimetricRapid Pore Size Distribution(GRPD) method. Two samples wereunused GAC and two were used fromthe unused GAC samples. (The clienthas determined the definition of used). The unused GAC were Calgon F-400(Y-334) and Norit 830 (Y-336).All four samples were compared toeach other and a commercially availablePCB coconut-based carbon of approximately1200 iodine number. Noneof the samples had a weight loss greaterthan 2.3% on conditioning (heating thesamples to 150ºC in argon and holdingfor 25 minutes).Losses of less than 8 percent indicatea well-stored sample that has been protectedfrom moisture pick-up from ambientair during handling and storageand was also fresh and not oxidized. Interms of total adsorption pore volume10 • August 2009 • www.filtnews.comboth unused samples out-performedthe used version by 16.8% and 14.9%,respectively. The difference between theunused GAC themselves is only about3%, and the difference between the usedGAC samples is less than 1%. However, the difference in used samples is dependenton the material adsorbed andthe degree to which the carbon is saturated. All four samples were similar interms of the shape of their characteristiccurves, but subtle differences in porestructure at different adsorption energylevels can be seen in the differentialcharacteristic curves.GRPD METHOD SUMMARYEach GRPD run measured morethan 300 adsorption and desorptiondata points covering seven orders ofmagnitude in relative pressure (isothermalbasis), and three orders of magnitudein carbon loading. The massadsorbed was also divided by the carbonmass to generate a weight percentloading for easier comparison. The rawdata is plotted in Figure 2. At 150ºC theadsorbent gas, C134a or 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane(TFE), is introduced andthe loading increases as temperature isdecreased. Note in Figure 2 that themass loading was plotted against temperaturebut the relative pressure wasalso changing. There are three variablesaffecting performance that change frompoint to point: vapor pressure, partialpressure, and temperature. To make comparisons easier, thelarge data file of adsorption and desorptionpoints at different temperaturesand relative pressures was simplified.First the data was interpolated to get 30evenly spaced points covering the entiredata range. Next the adsorption anddesorption results were averaged to getthe equilibrium values (the difference

Table 1.Figure 1.between adsorption and desorption wasminimal for this sample – no hysteresis). The y-axis is converted to pore volumemeasures, in cc liquid adsorbed orcc pores filled per 100 grams carbon, insteadof weight percent. The average interpolateddata for these characteristiccurves is presented in Table 1, and Figures1 and 1b expanded.PERFORMANCE PREDICTION MODELSThese curves are the only carbon relatedinformation required to predictFigure 1b.physical adsorption performance usingthe Polanyi Adsorption Potential theory. These single and multi-component,gas and liquid phase computer modelsare used to predict carbon performanceand are available from PACS. Filtration | Activated Carbonsformance predictions the followingpolynomials describesthese carbon samples:In the equation, y is thecommon logarithm of pore volumein cc/100g carbon and x isthe e/4.6V adsorption potentialin cal/cc. Characteristic curvepolynomials are also listed inAppendix A.ADSORPTION ISOTHERMSThe characteristic curves arealso translated into adsorptionisotherms using the programsmentioned above: Figure 3 forMTBE (weakly adsorbed material),Figure 4 for benzene(more strongly adsorbedspecies) and Figure 5 for phenolat pH=7 (quite strongly adsorbedmaterial).PORE SIZE DISTRIBUTIONSThe Kelvin equation, modifiedby Halsey, can be used toconvert the characteristic curvedata to calculated BET surfaceareas or pore size distributions. This is not useful in terms of performanceevaluations, but someaudiences are more comfortablewith the concepts of pore radiusand a series of capillary sizeswhen thinking about activatedcarbon. Figure 6 shows the cumulativepore size distributionsthat we include but find of littleuse. The single and multi pointBET surface area was calculated12 • August 2009 • www.filtnews.comfrom these curves.CONCLUSIONThe amount contaminantsloaded onto GAC is directly relatedto the influent concentrations. In drinking waterapplications the raw water has lowconcentrations, which results inlightly loaded used GAC. GAC iscompletely used when the influentand effluent are equal. Drinkingwater GAC applications use3-20% of the original total porevolume in the unused GAC. Thispore volume difference betweenunused and used GAC can be revealedby the GRPD test method. In contrast to drinking water applications, industrial GAC usagetypically results in use of 20-70%of the original total pore volume inthe unused GAC. Industrial GACapplications typically have PPMconcentrations in the raw waterand drinking water has PPB concentrationsin the influent. Concentrationdifferences determinehow much of the unused pore volumeis filled in the used GAC.ABOUT PACSPACS is celebrating its 25thyear of providing technicalproducts and services for the activatedcarbon industry. All authors can be reached atPACS Testing, Consulting, &Training, 409 Meade Dr,Coraopolis PA 15108 Phone: 1

Filtration | Metalworking CoolantAdding Filtration to Save Moneyon Metalworking Coolant UsageBy James J. JosephThere are several ways to addfiltration systems to existingcoolant reservoirs without investinglarge sums of money and saveon the costs of coolant disposal. Thethree techniques are to install the following:• A sidearm coolant cleaning deviceto an existing reservoir withno filtration.• A coolant “polishing” device toimprove the clarity of an existingfiltration system.• An off-line coolant recovery systemfor batches removed fromindividual machines. This article is the first in a series ofthree on how to implement the techniques.During difficult economic timeseach of these techniques are possiblewith a minimum investment and thepotential of a “quicker” payback fromthe money saved by reducing thenumber of coolant dumps and disposal. The key is to not necessarilylook for a total revamping project, butto use the funds for dumping as abudget to improve the system to wheredumping frequency is reduced and anet savings is realized.SIDEARM COOLANTSidearm filtration (known as bypassor kidney loop) is when a cleaning deviceworks off a single reservoir to cleanthe fluid and send it back to the samereservoir. Figure 1 shows that it is anadded cleaning unit where none existedbefore. Although the term filtration ismainly used, the units could be anycleaning mechanism including filters, centrifuges, magnetic separators or retentiontanks.DETERMINE THE BUDGET RANGEThe premise of this approach is tosee if the money spent for dumping anddisposing of dirty coolant can be usedto install a filtration system whichwould improve the coolants’ clarity anddumping would be less frequent. Thegoal is to have the combination of newfiltration and less dumping to be at alower annual cost. This is based on thefact that trucking or treating wastecoolants is viable, and in compliancewith the environmental laws. If they arenot, then the economics take on a completelydifferent set of inputs. Therewill be advantages in tool life, machinemaintenance and lower scrap, but theseitems can only be estimated and usuallytake too long to quantify. These rewardswill be measurable after thesystem is in place. Since the majority ofthe costs are related to dumping, disposingand replenishment, efforts todetermine their costs should yield ageneral idea of the money involved. The calculations can be simple arithmeticfor a given system:1. Calculate the volume of liquiddumped and disposed in one year.2. Determine the cost of disposing ofeach gallon (trucking away, wastetreatment).3. The volume of disposed fluid bythe cost per gallon will give anannual cost.4. Add labor costs for each dump forthe same year if they are significant.5. Add the cost of the fluids which areneeded to replenish the dumpedcoolant.6. The total will be the target forthe annual expenditures.Of course the quantities of fluidshould be large enough to justify someaction. That does not mean the facilityhas to be a large process. It could be arelatively small volume operation, which is dumped often in weekly ormonthly cycles. For example, a typical metalworkingoperation with a 5,000-gallon reservoir, which is dumped every 6 weeks, costsabout $53,280.00 per year. The recog-Figure 1. Sidearm systemFigure 2.14 • August 2009 • www.filtnews.com

nizable scenario includes: coolant disposalcost of $1.00 per gallon, newcoolant concentrate at $8.00 per gallon, and the mixed coolant concentration at4 percent. This does not count somelabor costs, which may be applicable.Even if the money is saved quicklythere usually is not enough cash to installa full flow system, which wouldextend the life of the coolant indefinitely;plus it would take too muchtime. Therefore, it is more realistic tosee if a sidearm system could be addedand achieve the goal where the combinationof installing/operating a new filterand the lower number of dumps cansave money.SIDEARM OPTIONSSidearm selections are usually basedon using a flow rate as a percentage ofthe process flow rate. Also, it can bebased on the number of times, within agiven time period, the reservoir’s volumeis sent through the cleaning device,i.e., 5,000 gallons at a rate of50GPM has a turnover every 100 min-Figure 3.
