One student gained a band 6. Onehundred and thirty five year 10 studentsimproved their average score difference by 2points from the 2010 data in English – literacyHSC results for Advanced, Standard andExtension 1 English show strong improvementon last year’s results with both groups achievingwithin the state average range. In Extension 2one student achieved a Band 4, in Extension 1English 80% of candidates achieved a Band 3 orbetter, in Advanced English 90% of thecandidates achieved a Band 4 or better and, inStandard English 64% of candidates achieved aband 3 or better.Years 7 and 8 students participated in theTheatre in Education performances around thethemes of mates and heroes. Bothperformances support English faculty teachingand learning programs for years 7 and 8Fifty five students from years 7 to 10 attendedan excellent performance by Statespeare at theCivic Theatre in Newcastle. Its focus was “IsShakespeare still relevant today?”Years 9 and 10 students participated in acareers in acting workshop run by ex-BHSstudent and TAFE entertainment graduate,Jacob Hayes, and international talent scout,Gina Stoj.Year 9 debating team comprising Abbie Owen,Eliza Baird, Holly Street and Malcolm Barnes,demonstrated their wonderful speaking andargument skills to win the zone finals for 2011.Year 9 students were also involved in theNewcastle Herald Newspaper competition andapart from composing an excellent schoolnewspaper one of the team, won theprestigious young writer of the year as part ofthe competition.3
