SENIOR SCHOOL
PRELIMINARY
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
2011
FOREWORD
Students,
Congratulations on your decision to pursue senior studies at Maitland High School. The
next two years will be demanding, but very rewarding for those who approach their
studies responsibly.
It is the intention of the school to work closely with each of you, and your home carers,
to ensure you make the most of your Higher School Certificate studies. We urge you
each to structure your time effectively to ensure that the responsibilities of study, home
commitments and necessary leisure activities are balanced.
It is important to understand that success in senior studies ultimately rests with each
student. The school will provide quality teaching and every possible support, but your
results are largely determined by how hard you work and the extent to which you can
enhance your knowledge, skills and understanding through effective home study.
The school recommends that each student should allocate 2 to 3 hours per day to their
home study program. As a part of their regular home study regime students should:
• Complete set homework, assignments, essays and formal assessment tasks.
• Revise/learn work previously covered and/or content of the day’s lessons.
• Read novels, prepared sheets, relevant reference materials.
To assist you to become a more successful independent learner and home studier, the
school will again be staging a senior study camp this year. Your participation in this
valuable support activity is urged. (Funds are available through the Student Assistance
Scheme to ensure that students do not miss out on this camp because of financial
difficulties.)
Senior study is demanding. Inevitably you will encounter some difficulties along the
way, but please remember to seek help as soon as possible to ensure that minor
difficulties are addressed and do not become serious problems. Your Class Teachers,
Year Adviser, Head Teachers and I are here to support you.
I am confident that 2011 will be a very successful year for our students.
Maitland High School 2011 Preliminary Assessment Booklet
PREAMBLE
2011 PRELIMINARY COURSE ASSESSMENT POLICY
Introduction
This material incorporates NSW Board of Studies Assessment requirements, and is provided for
the information of Preliminary Course senior students at Maitland High School.
The formal assessment program for the Preliminary courses delivered by Maitland High School
in 2011 is described within this booklet, and all information is accurate at the time of printing.
The specific time of some assessment tasks detailed within the various course entries may need
to be modified, but students will receive appropriate advance notice of any variations in class.
What are the Board of Studies requirements for completing courses satisfactorily
Preliminary Course work in a subject must be completed satisfactorily in order to gain a Board of
Studies Preliminary Course Record of Achievement. Students may not be admitted into a
Higher School Certificate (Year 12) Course without satisfactory completion of the relevant
Preliminary Course.
To satisfactorily complete the Preliminary Course, students must have:
Followed the course developed or endorsed by the Board;
Applied themselves with diligence and sustained effort to the set tasks and experiences
provided in the course by the school; and
Achieved some or all of the course outcomes.
The Board further requires that where a student has been given zero marks for failure to
complete assessment tasks totalling more than 50% of the final course assessment mark, the
Principal must certify that the course has not been studied satisfactorily.
What is assessment
Assessment is a compulsory feature of Preliminary and HSC Courses. The purpose of
assessment is to evaluate student achievement of course outcomes which cannot easily be
tested in formal examination situations, as well as of those skills tested by examinations.
On their HSC Result Notices students receive an assessment mark for each of their courses.
These marks are based on the quality of student performances in specified course assessment
tasks, undertaken whilst completing the relevant HSC course. Similarly, in Preliminary Courses
student achievement of learning outcomes is assessed through specified tasks.
The Board of Studies has identified components that must be included in the assessment
program of each course and the proportion of marks to be allocated to each component. These
vary from subject to subject, relating to the learning outcomes of each course. Assessment
tasks are developed by the school to measure student performance in the course components
and outcomes. Some of the outcomes can be tested by a formal exam, so a certain proportion
of the assessment is derived from major exams.
The purpose of this booklet is to summarise the assessment tasks, outcomes and components
that will be required for each Preliminary Course.
Maitland High School 2011 Preliminary Assessment Booklet
What must students do
The Board of Studies and the school expect students to have completed all assessment tasks.
Furthermore, students must:
• make a serious attempt at assessment tasks, and avoid any behaviour which disrupts class
colleagues during an assessment task;
• approach each assessment task honestly and avoid any assessment malpractices such as
cheating, or copying other’s work;
• submit work for assessment directly to the relevant teacher, and ensure that receipt is noted;
• inform their teachers in advance if they know they are going to be absent for an assessment
task;
• ask their teachers about any assessment tasks which may have been notified during an
absence from school;
• lodge an Illness/Misadventure Appeal Application (see proforma following) within one school
day of their return to school, where a task has been missed because of absence; and
• provide proof that they had a valid reason for the non-attempt or non-submission of a task.
Students are also strongly advised to inform/discuss any matters in advance (with their
teachers) which may affect either:
• The standard of presentation of their assessment task work; and/or
• The timing of submitting a task.
Procedures relating to malpractice
All work presented in assessment tasks and external examinations (including submitted works
and practical examinations) must be your own or must be acknowledged appropriately.
Malpractice, including plagiarism, could lead to your receiving zero marks and may jeopardise
your Preliminary and HSC results. Malpractice is any activity that allows you to gain an unfair
advantage over other students. It includes, but is not limited to:
• copying someone else’s work in part or in whole, and presenting it as your own;
• using material directly from books, journals, CDs or the internet without reference to the
source;
• building on the ideas of another person without reference to the source;
• buying, stealing or borrowing another person’s work and presenting it as your own;
• submitting work to which another person such as a parent, coach or subject expert has
contributed substantially;
• using words, ideas, designs or the workmanship of others in practical and performance tasks
without appropriate acknowledgement;
• paying someone to write or prepare material;
• breaching school examination rules;
• using non-approved aides during an assessment task;
• contriving false explanations to explain work not handed in by the due date;
• assisting another student to engage in malpractice.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Maitland High School 2011 Preliminary Assessment Booklet
In the administration and management of assessment tasks students will be given:
• sufficient warning for each assessment task, or regarding variations to the assessment
program for a course – a minimum of two weeks’ notification;
• clear guidelines on assessment tasks when they are set – about what is required, when it is
due, and how it will be marked (ie marking criteria);
• clear and meaningful feedback about their performance on specific tasks;
• progressive feedback about how they are performing in each course relative to other
students in the course (recorded as the Assessment Ranking on two formal school reports
during their Preliminary year);
• information/warnings of school concerns, where they are in danger of not meeting Board or
school requirements in a course, in time for them to address and correct the problem. (In
addition to Teacher/Head Teacher interviews, up to two formal Board of Studies warning
letters per course will be issued by the school so that students who are not meeting
requirements will be able to correct the problem).
• appropriate consideration/support arrangements when they have raised genuine problems in
advance, or when they have provided proof in the Appeals process of valid reasons for the
non-attempt or non-submission of a task;
• appropriate provision in course assessment programs for students transferring from other
schools/interstate;
• appropriate consideration, should they be granted permission by the Principal to change
courses, and the adoption of a revised assessment program; and
• a school review/Board of Studies appeal, if they are informed by the Principal that the school
is recommending to the Board that they have not studied Preliminary course(s) satisfactorily.
What will the school do if students fail to meet their assessment task responsibilities
Where a candidate fails to submit or complete an assessment task specified in the assessment
program, the following policy will apply:
• A deduction of 20% will be made for each day late, up to a maximum of five days (a
weekend counts as two days).
• If work is more than five days late, it must still be handed in with ZERO MARKS being
awarded.
• Up to five days extension may be given for late work, if in the view of the Appeals Committee
there is a valid reason for the lateness.
The school’s assessment will not compensate for factors such as extended illness,
misadventure, or domestic problems. However, a student who is absent, or adversely affected
during a particular task, will not necessarily receive a zero mark for that task, but has an
opportunity to appeal to the Assessment Appeals Panel.
If a student is unable to complete any assessment task by the due date, he/she may hand it in
unfinished and receive marks according to the quality of the work done. If the incomplete task is
accompanied by an Appeal Application (see proforma following), consideration may be given to
an extension of time should circumstances warrant it.
If a student does not hand in any evidence of work by the due date, he or she will automatically
be awarded ‘N’ (for non-attempt) unless an appeal is lodged. [NOTE: An ‘N’ Award is equivalent
to a zero (0).]
Students who are suspected of malpractice in any assessment task will be referred to the Head
Teacher of the subject who will write a report for the Appeals Committee who will then make a
ruling about the penalty to be imposed.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Maitland High School 2011 Preliminary Assessment Booklet
How can students appeal
Appeals lodged must be handed to the Head Teacher responsible for the subject on the form
prescribed in this booklet. These forms must be handed in on the first day of attendance after
the closing date for the task. [Forms are available from all Head Teachers, your Year Adviser
and the Board of Studies representative (Mrs Chapman-Hardy for 2011).]
The Head Teacher Administration (Mrs Chapman-Hardy), will request the formation of the
Appeals panel, consisting of the Deputy Principal and Board of Studies representative.
The school’s Assessment Appeals Panel will consider the evidence and decide whether to:
• Grant an extension of time for the assessment task, without any penalty;
• Grant an extension of time, with reduced marks;
• Permit a substitute assessment task to be set;
• Confirm the mark, zero or otherwise, which the teacher has already given; or
• Award an estimate, based on other evidence.
NOTE:
i) There is no ground for appeal against the value of the mark given.
ii) The Year Adviser will maintain a file of all appeals lodged.
iii) Medical Certificates are expected in cases of absences through illness.
Change to Pattern of Study (Subjects/Courses/Units)
Any change to the pattern of study undertaken by a student must be carefully planned with the
Year Adviser. The first step for a student wishing to change their pattern of study is to collect an
‘Application to Change to Pattern of Study (Subjects/Courses/Units)’ form from the Year
Adviser. It is important that the student continues to meet commitments for all courses until the
change requested receives final approval from the Principal. For example, it is not acceptable to
stop attending a course simply because a request to drop the course has been lodged. Serious
difficulties can arise if the proposed change is not approved and the student has not been
meeting commitments for that course assuming the proposed change would be approved.
‘Application to Change to Pattern of
Study (Subjects/Courses/Units) form.
Forms available from the Head Teacher
Administration.
Conclusion
Students are urged to refer to the information provided in this booklet regularly throughout their
Preliminary studies. The guidelines and course assessment information provided here will
ensure students have access to essential advice on their assessment programs. [Where
circumstances that are not addressed in these guidelines require supplementary decisions, the
Principal (or designate) will determine the appropriate course of action.]
Maitland High School 2011 Preliminary Assessment Booklet
Senior Studies Information – Year 11 2011
1. Award of the Higher School Certificate requires the study of a minimum of 12 units in the
Preliminary Course and a minimum of 10 units in the HSC Course. Both the Preliminary
Course and the HSC Course must include the following:
at least 6 units from Board Developed Courses including at least 2 units of a Board
Developed Course in English;
at least three courses of 2 units value or greater;
at least four subjects.
At most, 6 units of courses in Science can contribute to Higher School Certificate eligibility.
2. Study can be either full time or part-time. Students can pursue pathways, which means
they have up to 5 years to accumulate respectively their Preliminary and HSC Records of
Achievement. Students can repeat courses. Full time Year 11 students are required to
attempt at least 12 units of study, consistent with the pattern outlined in (1) above.
3. Each subject is divided into two phases – the Preliminary Course (the part of the course
which is attempted initially; generally the course studied in Year 11) and the HSC Course
(the course attempted once the Preliminary Course has been satisfactorily completed;
generally the course studied in Year 12).
4. University entrance is based on the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). If a
student wishes to receive the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), he/she must
study a minimum of 10 Board Developed HSC units.
5. School organisation has been structured to ensure that students meet the time
requirements of each of their Board of Studies syllabi (120 indicative hours for each 2 unit
course and 60 indicative hours for each 1 unit course, in each of the Preliminary and
Higher School Certificate years). The Preliminary (Year 11) components of each course,
including the Yearly Examination, will have concluded by the end of Term 3. This means
that, provided students have completed Preliminary Course requirements satisfactorily,
Higher School Certificate studies will commence from the beginning of Term 4, 2011.
6. Students are only permitted to change subjects in the first four weeks of Term 1, provided
the change is in the student’s best interest and all previous necessary class work and
homework can be completed. The Preliminary phase of study only extends for the first
three terms of the year, so permitting later course changes would seriously disadvantage
incoming students to new courses.
7. Some senior students may have a different pattern of day-time attendance from the
junior school. Courses may begin from 7.30am; others are being provided through
Maitland Schools Network, TAFE, and other providers. Consequently some students may
start and/or finish outside the routine 9am to 3.25pm school day. Students who do not
have scheduled lessons at the beginning and end day are not required to attend at those
times. However to be allowed a late arrival or early departure the student must complete a
VOR (variation of routine) form and have such an attendance pattern authorised.
8. Year 11 progress reports will be provided on two occasions. Reports towards the end of
Term 2 will consist of an assessment rank and a comment for each course. A full yearly
report will be distributed in Term 4. Upon satisfactory completion of their Preliminary
courses, students are awarded an official Board of Studies Record of Achievement.
Unless otherwise advised, this will be distributed at the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony in
September 2012.
Maitland High School 2011 Preliminary Assessment Booklet
Vocational Education and Training (VET) Courses
Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses are offered as part of the Higher School
Certificate. They enable students to study courses, which are relevant to industry needs and
have clear links to post-school destinations. These courses allow students to gain both Higher
School Certificate qualifications and accreditation with industry and the workplace as part of the
Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). These courses each have a specific workplace
component and a minimum number of hours students spend in the workplace or a simulated
workplace. Students receive special documentation showing the competencies gained.
As these courses are dual-accredited, formal assessment has the dual purposes of reporting
achievement in the Higher School Certificate, and of providing evidence of AQF qualifications
and related Statements of Attainment.
The courses are assessed on a competency basis. The student’s performance is judged against
a prescribed standard. A participant is judged as competent or not yet competent, on the
basis of a variety of forms of evidence, linked to the requirements of the workplace.
A Higher School Certificate examination in the VET curriculum courses is available. Students
who wish to have their courses as counting towards university admission are required to
nominate during the HSC year to undertake the optional HSC examination. The exam will be
independent of the competency-based assessment during the course and have no impact on
student eligibility for AQF qualifications. However, it is essential that all students have the
experience in their preliminary courses of formal exams and assessment tasks, so that they can
make an informed decision about the optional HSC exam they can undertake in 2012. Similarly,
schools provide assessment marks to the Board of Studies partly to ensure that the appropriate
provision can be make for students who miss their HSC exams because of accident, illness or
misadventure.
An assessment outline for each of the following courses:

Construction
Hospitality
Metal and Engineering
Retail Services
Sports Coaching
will be issued by the relevant faculties.
All students must satisfy the log of skills identified in the course. These skills are documented in
the Student Log Book. Failure to be ‘marked off’ on skills may result in unsatisfactory completion
of the Preliminary Course and the withholding of the relevant AQF qualification / certification.
Individual course assessment schedules will be handed out to students and
signed off on in each specific course.
Maitland High School 2011 Preliminary Assessment Booklet
Maitland High School Assessment Outline
Core + Electives:
Preliminary Sport Coaching - VET
The assessment components in this course are competency based. This means that students need to demonstrate
that they have gained and can apply the specific knowledge and skills of each unit of competency. Competency
assessment is graded as “not yet competent,” “developing,” “competent’. This means a course mark is not
allocated. Each student will also undertake a mandatory 35 hour work placement.
Depending on the achievement of units of competency, the possible qualification outcome is a Certificate II in
Sport (Coaching) or a Statement of Attainment towards Certificate II in Sport (Coaching).
The exam events will be confirmed by your teacher as they may be used for the assessment of competencies
and/or BOS/reporting requirements.
Selected units only to be confirmed by your teacher.
