Bobemigrated to Canada in 1912, followed by sister Cissey and her soldier. 22Beck—twenty-seven and single in 1901—lived where she worked at 340 Hornsey Rise,Islington. A nice address for genteel domestic service. I imagined shiny dark-brownbalustrades curving open at the bottom of a set of wide stairs and imperious but kindly voicescalling for her service, although perhaps it was nothing like that.Islington, London 1908‘Beck!
