Dulux Trade Light & Space: makingrooms feel brighter and more spaciousLight & Space is a range of specialcolours, available in five water-basedDulux Trade finishes, that harnessrevolutionary LumiTec technologyto make rooms feel bigger andappear brighter.Light & Space is perfect for creating a bright, cheerfulhealing environment, and making the most of places withlittle natural light such as corridors and alcoves. It hasa unique ability to reflect light that would otherwise beabsorbed. In tests to compare light absorption values, walls decorated with Light & Space colours absorbed8% of the visible light, whereas conventional emulsionfrom the Dulux Trade range absorbed 16%.This ability to maximise available light can result in theuse of up to 22%** less energy by minimising the needfor artificial lighting. That’s the equivalent of reducingthe bulb wattage in the room from 50W to 40W. PRODUCTSCASE STUDY:Starring role for Ecosure in Birmingham theatres. The QE contract is a huge £559m developmentin Birmingham - the first acute hospital to bebuilt in the city for over 70 years. It covers anarea of approximately 500,000m² over 9 floorsand contains 30 theatres together with enoughrooms for over 1,000 beds.Having been awarded the contract, FH Harvey’sfirst step was to enlist the support of the ICI PaintsAkzoNobel specification team. As FH Harvey is aContract Partner of Dulux Trade, we were able todiscuss the project in detail before deciding torecommend ultra tough, wipeable Dulux TradeDiamond Matt for general wall areas; a moreadvanced anti-bacterial coating for the theatrerooms and Ecosure Gloss for the woodwork. The benefits of using Ecosure were threefold.Firstly, the paint’s water-based formula has a lowerenvironmental impact than standard Dulux Tradeproducts without compromising quality andperformance. It has reduced VOC content and is 30%*lower in embodied carbon. Secondly, Ecosure Glossremoves the risk of yellowing, which was importantin this case due to the length of time the first areaswould be left standing. Thirdly, the paint dries quicklyto an attractive high sheen finish.Result: a safe and visually appealing environmentfor patients, visitors and hospital staff.| 15

Create colour

COLOURCreating colour schemeswith patients in mindColour in a healthcare environment should do much more than just make thebuilding look attractive. Well-chosen decor can contribute positively to thecreation of an environment in which patients can feel comfortable and at ease. The following pages feature colour schemesspecifically designed for the healthcare environmentby our commercial colour consultants. We have dividedthese schemes into three key types of space: publicareas, patient accommodation and treatment rooms. Each location has its own very different requirements andconstraints, influenced by the needs of the people whooccupy or use it.Begin by choosing a Neutral as this will be the maincolour used for the majority of wall surfaces, flowingthroughout the area. Accent colours are stronger shadesto create visual interest, whilst the colours for doors arestronger still. These colour differences are importantin order to create the necessary levels of colour contrastto help visually impaired people find their way aroundin line with The Equality Act Guidelines (see page 26).For larger versions of the colours featured in this guidevisit www.duluxtrade.co.uk to order free A8 samples.STEP 1STEP 2STEP 3ExampleAlways start by selectinga neutral for your mainwall colour.Choose one of theseshades for the featurewalls. Finally, choose a colourfor the doors.Main WallsFeature WallsDoors90YY 83/03942RB 63/13750GG 71/18030RB 16/14482YY 85/03848BB 56/16250GY 74/27310BB 07/150Green Clay00.00.00York White| 19

Colour in Public SpacesPublic access areas within healthcare facilities offer tremendous scope for colourchoice, but it is still important to bear in mind the needs of patients, clinical staff andvisitors to ensure that these spaces look and feel at home within the overall scheme.NeutralsBegin by choosing a neutral. This willbe the main broad wall colour thatflows through the scheme.ColoursWaiting areasAs most people spend a considerable amount of timein these areas colour schemes should be uplifting andinteresting. Visually attractive accent colours can be usedto not only highlight different departments, but also tocreate a modern and contemporary environment.90YY 83/036Corridors and Receptions82YY 85/038Hospital corridor areas can often be confusing and lookvery institutionalised. To aid navigation and way finding, longcorridors can be divided with strong accent colours eitherfor directional purposes or department identification. Thiscan be achieved by highlighting certain junctions within theseareas. The area behind the reception desk should also behighlighted in order to identify it to the visiting public.RestaurantsGreen ClayRestaurants and cafe areas need to have a differentatmosphere to the rest of the building. Warmer palettesmake people feel most comfortable and relaxed, thereforeby using these tones the areas should appear warm andinviting to encourage use.York White20 |

Colour in patient roomsPatient rooms should be comfortable, calm, non-intimidating, safe andpersonalised. Lighting is often subdued, so this should influence colourchoice. Excessive use of bright colours can interfere with visualdiagnosis and lead to overstimulation.NeutralsBegin by choosing a neutral. This willbe the main broad wall colour thatflows through the scheme.ColoursWard areasIt is important to keep these areas light and fresh as colourswith too much saturation could effect visual diagnosis. To give interest, a softer palette can be used to highlightkey features such as behind the sink area, cupboard doorsor window walls. It is still important however to ensure theseareas give a modern and uplifting impression as patientsoften spend long amounts of time in them.TimelessPaediatric UnitsOchre WhiteChildren’s wards need to be interesting and vibrant.Using a simple combination of pure accents can createan impression of fun that is appealing and reassuringto children. Using a clear and unsophisticated palettecan help to reduce patient anxiety and confusion bydistracting their senses.Intensive care30GY 88/014These areas need to be calming and restful. A soft neutralcolour is recommended in these areas, however to avoida bland looking environment, muted and soothing accentscan be used in small areas.81YY 87/03122 |

Colour in treatment and therapy roomsBoth a patient room and a working environment for medical staff, therapy and treatment rooms require very careful consideration.NeutralsBegin by choosing a neutral. This willbe the main broad wall colour thatflows through the scheme.ColoursConsultation roomsAlthough similar to patient rooms in terms of using a warmneutral for the main areas, interest can be achieved byusing a stronger combination of accent colours where visualdiagnosis does not take place, such as behind a desk.30YY 79/053Therapy roomsThe types of colours used in these areas depend uponthe type of therapy or treatment being given. More physicaltreatments, for instance would require a stimulating andenergising combination to encourage physical activity.61YY 85/050Operating Rooms71YY 87/078Most operating theatre walls are green or blue/greenin colour. This to counteract the effects on the eyeof prolonged staring at the deep red of an open wound. As green is the complimentary colour of red, it is ableto neutralize the after-image produced by the surgeon’sconcentration. Creating colour contrast in line withThe Equality Act GuidelinesThe Equality Act Guidelines are designed to help healthcare providers avoiddiscriminating against people with disabilities including visual impairment. The Equality ActEnsuring that neighbouring expanses of colour, suchas walls and doors, are clearly distinguishable by usingcontrasting colours is first and foremost good designpractice. But it is also an important aspect of the guidanceprovided by The Equality Act.The Equality Act Guidelines are designed to helphealthcare workers provide a better service forpeople with disabilities including visual impairment.SkirtingsMaking the skirting the same or a similar colour asthe wall gives visually impaired people an accurateindication of the size of the floor, so they can avoidbumping into walls. For more information and in-depth guidance on colourcontrast, please send for our free CD.Visit www.duluxtrade.co.uk/colourandcontrastLRV and visual contrastDulux Trade have conducted research with the RNIB,Guide Dogs for the Blind and Reading University to lookinto ways in which colour can help visually impairedpeople to navigate a building as easily as possible. Thisestablished that over 80% of visually impaired peopleare able to discern colour differences. So using colourcontrast can make their movement much easier.Approved Document M and BS8300: 2001 advise thatany colours used to differentiate surfaces should vary intheir light reflectance value (LRV) by at least 30 points.WallsThe largest critical surfaces, walls need to be clearlydistinguishable to give visually impaired peoplegreater security.Doors0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 99LRV values range from darkest 0 to 99 maximum possible lightThe whole door and architrave should contrast withthe surrounding surfaces. The only exceptions aredoors to storage spaces, which patients and visitorsdo not need to distinguish.26 |

COLOURCASE STUDY:The Dementia Services Development Centrecalls on Dulux Trade expertiseDulux Trade has helped to develop a series ofcolour ranges that the centre can recommendto those providing care for people with dementia. The Dementia Services Development Centre at theUniversity of Stirling was established in 1989 toimprove the understanding of dementia, and providestraining for doctors, nurses, social workers and others. The project is part of the centre’s new technologysuite, comprising an en-suite bathroom, a livingarea and kitchen. Acting as a ‘showhome’ forthose involved in dementia care, it showcases newtechnology and equipment. To meet the duties of The Equality Act, Dulux Tradewas asked to develop a range of colour schemesthat took into account the need to enhance spatialawareness by contrasting visually adjacent criticalsurfaces by 30 points difference in Light ReflectanceValue – a substantial difference which can leadto dull, monochromatic results without a high levelof expertise and guidance. The colour schemes developed by Dulux Tradeaid those with visual impairment and aid navigation– the lilac or pale green walls within the living andcommunal areas contrasting with pristine white trimand oak doors, and bright yellow bathroom doors.Colm Cunnigham, from the centre, comments:“We needed Dulux Trade to provide a wide rangeof colour schemes from which users could thenchoose the most appropriate base. We now havea range of colour schemes we can confidentlyrecommend to our clients.”| 27

COLOURCASE STUDY:Working with The King’s Fund to“Enhance the Healing Environment”‘Enhancing the Healing Environment’ is the name ofa long-standing initiative by The King’s Fund– an organisation dedicated to supporting thehealth system by working in partnership withhealthcare teams and voluntary organisationsacross the country.Under this initiative, training and capital is providedto enable nurse-led teams of patients, estates andfacilities managers and arts coordinators to workin partnership. The aim is simply to improve theenvironment in which healthcare is delivered andhas been supported by the Department of Health.“We chose Dulux Trade paint as our patient groupliked the extensive range of colours and the personalservice of the colour coordinator, who providedsome great colour schemes. Repainting cycles havebeen extended because of the durability of the paint, and the enhancement of the environment has led togreater appreciation of the area with less damageby patients. The colour scheme worked so well thatwe replicated it in our second ‘Enhancing the HealingEnvironment’ project – providing a child-friendlyvisiting suite within an acute hospital.”Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust‘Enhancing the Healing Environment’ team. The initiative in action:The Willows, LeicesterThe recent transformation of a dark, intimidatingcentral space between four single storey wardsat The Willows is a fine example of how ‘Enhancingthe Healing Environment’ can make a difference –and one in which Dulux Trade products and colourconsultants played a key role. The objective of the project was to retain the space’sfunction as a thoroughfare between the wards, butadd a space for patients, staff and visitors to sit andrelax in a welcoming environment with potentialtherapeutic benefits. The once bleak empty space is now enhanced bycurved, undulating low level walls, decorated withcarefully chosen Dulux Trade colours, that separatethe seating area from the walk-through sections.Above, large ceiling-mounted fabric kites reduce noiselevels and create a soft, friendly ambience.Introducing The King’s FundThe King’s Fund is a charity that works to improvehealth and healthcare in England.
