The resolutionwas spearheaded by Councilor Felix G. Arroyo, At-Large.“Boston’s parking workers want what we all want, a job wherethey are paid fair wages and benefits, treated fairly, and able toprovide for themselves and their families,” Arroyo said. “I amproud to have introduced a resolution to support our parkingworkers joining <strong>Teamsters</strong> <strong>Local</strong> <strong>25</strong> and that it was unanimouslypassed by the Boston City Council.”“We appreciate Councilor Arroyo’s leadership in supportingand helping Boston’s parking workers win the security for themselvesand for their families by forming a union,” said Sean M.O’Brien, President of <strong>Local</strong> <strong>25</strong>. “Parking workers provide a valuableservice to residents and visitors to the city of Boston and theydeserve a safe, secure and respectful working environment. Theycan get those things by forming a union and getting a powerfulvoice on the job—as <strong>Teamsters</strong>.”The resolution states in part: “…the Boston City Council supportsthe parking workers in their fight to be represented by<strong>Teamsters</strong> <strong>Local</strong> <strong>25</strong> and calls on all building owners and managersto join the Council in asking the parking contractors to providegood full-time jobs with fair salaries and benefits; and thereforebe it further resolved, The Boston City Council recommends thatbuilding owners and managers contract with parking contractorswho support the right of their workers to unionize.”<strong>Local</strong> <strong>25</strong> has been very successful helping parking workersin the Boston area form their union with the <strong>Teamsters</strong>. On November8, by a more than 2-1 margin, bus and shuttle drivers employedby Standard Parking in the Boston area voted to join <strong>Local</strong> <strong>25</strong>.The drivers work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) and the Cambridge Health Alliance, which serves threehospitals. The vote was 19-8 and there are 35 workers in thebargaining unity.The drivers join their colleagues—270 attendants, cashiers andvalet workers at Standard—who voted to join <strong>Local</strong> <strong>25</strong> in October.The workers want job security, respect and fair pay.In February 2012, 334 workers at Central Parking in theBoston area joined <strong>Local</strong> <strong>25</strong>.With these recent victories, <strong>Local</strong> <strong>25</strong> now represents aboutone-quarter of the parking industry in the Boston area.“<strong>Teamsters</strong> <strong>Local</strong> <strong>25</strong> could not have achieved this incredibleresult without the support of the <strong>Teamsters</strong> National ParkingCouncil,” O’Brien said. “It was a collaborative effort by the InternationalBrotherhood of <strong>Teamsters</strong> Industrial Trades Division(National Parking Council), the International Brotherhood of<strong>Teamsters</strong> Organizing Department and the <strong>Teamsters</strong> <strong>Local</strong> <strong>25</strong>Organizing Department. It is great to see everyone workingtogether for a common goal.
