The <strong>Local</strong> <strong>25</strong> building inCharlestown was lit purple,January 11-14SHEDDINGLIGHT<strong>Teamsters</strong> <strong>Local</strong> <strong>25</strong>Building Goes Purpleto Stand up toSubstance AbuseFor more information, visitwww.GoProjectPurple.org orwww.theherrenproject.orgThe <strong>Teamsters</strong> <strong>Local</strong> <strong>25</strong> building in Charlestown joinedschools and community groups across the nation in“going purple,” January 11-14, to support ProjectPurple, an anti-substance abuse awareness program.The program is an initiative of The Herren Project,a non-profit foundation established by Massachusetts native Chris Herren, formerNBA basketball player, motivational speaker, author and sobriety advocate, that assistsindividuals and families struggling with addiction. Project Purple’s goals are to createawareness and educate the public on the epidemic of substance abuse while encouragingteens and people of all ages to make good choices and stand up to drugs and alcohol. Theprogram will also work to raise funds to provide effective treatment solutions for thosewho need assistance to overcome substance abuse issues.“Chris Herren got a second lease on life and knows how lucky he is,” PresidentO’Brien said. “He is now using his influence to help other people battling substanceabuse. We will continue to work with him to bring attention to this issue.”Herren spoke to a standing-room-only crowd last year at the May monthly meetingand stayed after to meet with members and their children. He “retweeted” a photo ofthe <strong>Local</strong> <strong>25</strong> building lit purple January 12 with the message, “@<strong>Teamsters</strong><strong>25</strong> have beenw/me since DAY 1.”In addition to purple lit buildings across the United States, many college and professionalbasketball programs wore purple January 11-14 to show their support of Herren’sproject.
