Dr. Grimstad informed the Assemblythat this Bill passed in the House and theSenate, where it has been signed by theGovernor and became effective July 1, 2010During the meeting, after our annualreading of the necrology report honoringour members who have left us in the pastyear, we passed three resolutions. Thefirst resolution approved was to officiallyrecognize Dr. Wayne Gravois in appreciationof his many years of dedicated service tothe Academy. We approved for the <strong>LAFP</strong> tocreate a “Resident and Student LeadershipCommittee” to be used to for discussingissues affecting students and residents aswell as organizing leadership activities.Lastly, we approved for bylaws changesto be made from resolutions that wereapproved during the 62 nd General Assemblywith regards to adding an at large memberto the <strong>LAFP</strong> Board of Directors. We hadun-contested elections with many of theofficers agreeing to serve another term. Iwant to personally thank all those thatagreed to serve and remain active in theAcademy.After completing our business by earlyafternoon, we adjourned to the spend timewith family on the beaches of Sandestin.We hope everyone enjoyed their stay at theresort and were able to see the wonderfulfireworks show either in Baytowne or onthe beach. Bordelon, MD,Lectureship Series. The F.P. <strong>LAFP</strong> NewsMichael Harper, MD Receives the 2010<strong>LAFP</strong> Family Physician of the Year AwardThe Louisiana Academy of FamilyPhysicians was proud to honor MichaelHarper, MD, as its 2010 <strong>LAFP</strong> FamilyPhysician of the Year on Saturday, July3, 2010 at the Awards and InstallationCeremony. This award recognizesDr. Harpers’ years of service to hispatients, his dedication to FamilyMedicine and his contributionsto developing and improving theDr. Michael Harper pictured with his wife,Nancy Harper.profession for future physicians andtheir patients. Letters of endorsementwere received from patients, colleaguesand friends who have known Dr. Harperfor the 29 years he has been bringinghealth care to the state of Louisiana.“Being selected as Louisiana FamilyPhysician of the year is a great honor,”Dr. Harper said. “I share this awardwith several great leaders who havemade a huge contribution to familymedicine. I thank the Academy forrecognizing my efforts.”Dr. Harper attended college atLouisiana Tech University and MedicalSchool at LSU School of Medicine inShreveport. After completing his FamilyMedicine Residency at Dwight DavidEisenhower Army Medical Center, FortGordon, GA, he served in the army andpracticed family medicine for two yearsat Fort Benning, GA.In 1981 he joined the full time familymedicine faculty at LSU School ofMedicine in Shreveport. In addition toteaching he has maintained a facultypractice for 29 years. He achievedthe academic rank of Professor ofFamily Medicineand directed theFamily MedicineResidency from 1984 until 2010. He isthe immediate Past-President of theAmerican Association for Primary CareEndoscopy.As a teacher, he stays committed tovarious programs – from the Shreveportand Vivian Family Medicine ResidencyProgram to providing lectures onendoscopy. Dr. Harper served as<strong>LAFP</strong> Education Committee Chair foreight years, where he assisted in thedevelopment for both the <strong>LAFP</strong> AnnualAssembly and Winter Conferences.Since January 1, 2010 he has beenActing Chairman of the Departmentof Family Medicine at LSUHSC inShreveport. He is married to NancyBushnell-Harper who is on the facultyin the Departments of Psychiatry andFamily Medicine.
