Foundation NewsHighlights from the 2010 National Conference ofFamily Medicine Residents and Medical StudentsAnother successful National Conferencefor Family Medicine Residents and MedicalStudents took place in Kansas City on July29-31. Preliminary attendance included 828Students, 1,054 Residents (including ResidentExhibitors), 936 other Exhibitors, and 382others (including staff, speakers, Chapterstaff, etc) for a grand total of around 3,200.According to the AAFP, this is the largestconference in the last number of years.The theme of this year’s conference was“Health Policy: Building a Better HealthCare System”. Such a theme was evidentthroughout the conference, as workshops,lectures, and other events centered on thepopular topic of health care reform. Healthcare policy was not the only matter ofbusiness at this year’s convention. Chapterdelegates participated in daily congressbusiness sessions to discuss policies, writeresolutions (to eventually be voted on andsent to the AAFP Board of Delegates) as wellas vote on resident and student officers forthe upcoming year. Louisiana’s Resident andStudent Delegates include: Lacey Millet, MD(Resident Delegate), Admir Seferovic, MD(Resident Alternate-Delegate), Larissa Thomas(Student Delegate) and Renee Gravois(Student Alternate-Delegate).The conferencetruly offered something for everyone’sinterests. Each of the three days were filledwith presentations and workshops on careerplanning, clinical skills, health policy andadvocacy, leadership development, practicemanagement and research opportunities.The conference exposition hallprovided residents and students anopportunity to gain information fromover 1600 exhibitors from across thecountry. Exhibitors included residencyprograms, medical associations,medical equipment companies andmuch more. As an exhibitor, the<strong>LAFP</strong> had the opportunity to highlightLouisiana’s ten (10) Family MedicineResidency Programs and provideinformation regarding the various jobopportunities for family physiciansupon completion of residency. The interestamong student attendees was much greaterthan anticipated and Louisiana’s residentexhibitors did a GREAT job promoting FamilyMedicine in “Who Dat” nation! Booth giveaways consisted ofLouisiana products including Zapp’s potatochips, Tabasco sauce, Community Coffee,Tony Chachere’s seasoning and Leah’spralines. All Louisiana attendees were given a“Who Dat” t-shirt to wear during the OpeningSocial held on Thursday, July 29 th in theExposition Hall.
