unlimited tolerance, and the accusation ofpromoting hate speech. In many churchessermons that deal with sinful behavior arevery seldom heard. The lines between hatingsin and loving the sinner have been blurredby the heresy that we are all practicingsinners in word, thought, and deed. Thereforelive, and let live. Just encourage the folks anddon’t make waves!True preachers of the Word of God are menand women who speak for God who does notchange and is not affected by the opinions ofHis critics. In previous articles I have made thecommon observation that the more thingschange, the more they stay the same. Anotherholiness preacher of a day not too long agomade a similar analysis of the trend of hisday. A.W. Tozer, a pastor and evangelist fromChicago, spoke to the issue:“Within the circles of evangelical Christianityitself, there has arisen in the last few yearsdangerous and disturbing trends awayfrom true Bible Christianity. A spirit has beenintroduced which is surely not the Spirit ofChrist, methods employed which are whollycarnal, objectives adopted which have notone line of scripture to support them, a level ofconduct accepted which is practically identicalwith that of the world; and yet scarcely onevoice has been raised in opposition.. And thisin spite of the fact that the Bible-honoringfollowers of Christ lament among themselvesthe dangerous, wobbly course things aretaking....The times call for a Spirit-baptizedand articulate orthodoxy. They whose soulshave been illuminated by the Holy Ghost mustarise and under God, assume leadership. Thereare those among us whose hearts can discernbetween the true and the false, whose spiritualsense of smell enables them to detect thespurious afar off, who have the blessed gift ofknowing. Let such as these arise and be heard.So radically is the essential spirit and contentof orthodox Christianity changing these daysunder the vigorous leadership of undiscerningreligionists that, if the trend is not stopped, whatis called Christianity will soon be somethingaltogether other than the faith of our fathers.” 2If we truly speak for God, then we need tounderstand that God hates sin. Sin is seriousand it cannot be tolerated in the life of atrue believer. The God of love and mercywhom we worship and have promised toobey has commanded us to hate sin morethan we love the use of our hands, feet, andeyes ( Matthew 18: 8-9 NIV). Some may labelsermons condemning sin as hate speech, butGod is very clear on the issue, and we needto be clear when we warn those still living insin. Preaching the truth in love must be ourmotivation.Recently I came across a new perspectivefrom a very unlikely source: Penn FraserJillette and his partner Raymond Joseph Tellerare comedy illusionists who headline in LasVegas. Penn stands six foot six and is a verywell read and articulate speaker. He is also avery outspoken atheist. After one of his showshe was approached by a man even bigger instature than himself who handed him a Bible.Penn was impressed with the man’s sincerity,and in an interview about their meetingrepeatedly said what a big guy and what anice man he was. This is a brief excerpt of thatinterview:“I’ve always said that I don’t respect peoplewho don’t proselytize. I don’t respect that atall. If you believe that there’s a heaven and ahell, and people could be going to hell or notgetting eternal life, and you think that it’s notreally worth telling them this because it wouldmake it socially awkward—and atheists whothink people shouldn’t proselytize and who sayjust leave me alone and keep your religion toyourself—How much do (continued on page 22)Winter 2012 / EVANGELISTS' PERSPECTIVE / 3

BILL & KATHY ULMETMany if not all of our Nazarene song evangelists have performed Jon Mohr’sbeautiful gospel song, “Find Us Faithful.” One line stands out: “We’re pilgrimson the journey of the narrow road and those who’ve gone before us line theway.” When I observe the ministry and lives of Bill and Kathy Ulmet, I see a livingpicture of that entire song. Bill and Kathy come from godly homes, are faithfulpilgrims on the narrow road, and are leaving to their children clear footprints tofollow. When thinking about Dadand his ministry, a few phrasesand/or Scriptures automaticallycome to mind:“Never be lacking in zeal" and"Whatever you do, do it with allyour might" automatically floodinto my brain when my Dad ismentioned! I have met MANYpeople in MANY different placesin my lifetime. One would have tolook long and hard to find someonewith more zeal than Bill Ulmet!What we call zeal and "great gusto"in our family extends to literally everypart of Dad's life and ministry. Iam smiling right now while writingthis because even family hide- andseekgames and reading a storyto grandchildren involves suchincredible action and noise. I findit quite comical! In fact when mychildren are being loud and crazy(which is quite commonplace), wehave said, "You need to use yourGrandma Kathy voice NOT yourPapa Bill voice.” That makes muchmore sense to our kids than thewhole “indoor vs. outdoor voice"thing! I can't think of any part ofDad's life or ministry that is carriedout without an amazing amount ofexcitement and enthusiasm."Make the most of every opportunity"is another phrase that remindsme of Dad and his ministry.Since Dad made a covenant withGod to share Christ with all hecame in contact with as a youngteacher/coach/youth worker, hehas truly set out to do just that. MyDad has daily shared Jesus with numerouspeople in the gas station,restaurant, and auto repair shop. Itis very typical for kids to be embarrassedto go to the mall with theirparents when they are teenagers.Imagine my horror when my Dadwas sharing the Four Spiritual Lawswith mannequins in the store! Ioften wanted to crawl under thetable at restaurants because hewas "at it again"! Hitchhikers, whothought they were simply gettinga ride from point A to point B gota whole lot of Jesus too. Jehovah'sWitness missionaries who comedoor –to- door probably havestruck each of Bill Ulmet's addressesoff of their lists because afterthey shared about their Jesus, theyweren't allowed to leave until heshared about his Jesus! All jokingaside, I am yet to meet anyone whoshares the name of Jesus Christmore boldly than my Dad. My Dadhas an overwhelming passion toshare Jesus Christ with those hecomes in contact with whenever,wherever and however."Unforgettable" is also a word thatcomes to mind in reference tomy Dad. Once you experience BillUlmet, you don't ever forget him.Wow, have we made some memorieswith Dad! He used to let all fourof us girls fix his hair with barrettesand ties while we listened to gospelmusic on Sunday nights afterchurch. I remember eating grilledcheese sandwiches dipped inketchup and bean with baconsoup. In the event we actually hada special treat of staying in a hotel,Dad always instigated jumpingon the beds and pillow fights, toour delight and my poor Mom'sabsolute horror! Some memorieswe wish we could forget, like whena family of six only had one littlePinto hatchback to drive. Dad and Iwere the lucky two to be crammedinto the hatchback. Where werethe traffic laws when I neededthem? Thank goodness that’s illegalnow! I can truly say I neverheard Dad complain about nothaving enough. Not only did henot complain, he always taught uswe were blessed and that we hadenough to share with others.My Mom is an introverted, wellmanneredrule obeyer who hadabsolutely NO idea what she wasgetting herself into. That's probablya good thing!My Mom doesn't forget ANYONEor the important days in theirlife. The number of people shehas blessed with her ministry ofencouragement through writingcards and notes is astronomical.She has given much care andcompassion to so many throughher words of encouragement. Theamount of cardstock, stamps, time,energy and thoughtfulness shehas given to let people know she isthinking of them is beyond amazingto me.Mom is determined, diligent andhard working. She has worn manydifferent ministry hats over theyears. Even if the hat wasn't herfavorite or the one she chose, shewould wear it with effectivenessand perseverance. One such timeI remember was when she tookon the Children's Ministry Coordinationrole. She jumped in andorganized, planned and workedvery diligently even though I don'trecall that being a position shewas interested in pursuing. Duringher time in this position, somereally "fun" things came up likeone of the Sunday School teacherstelling all the children Santa Clauswasn't real! Yes, "findingthe humor in a crazy situation" haslikely become one of Mom's spiritualgifts as well it should be if youare to live with Bill Ulmet!Many times I have seen my Mommake the best of a situation inquiet strength even though shewould have chosen differently ifgiven the option. For example, myMom has been very creative whenstretching the food budget. MyMom will eat just about anythingand actually be somewhat happyabout it! This continues to amazeme and my sisters to this very day.She laughs in the face of expirationdates on salad dressings, etc.I have warned her on many occasionsabout this "dangerous"habit! My Mom can survive on verylittle and actually enjoy it. I didn'talways appreciate that especiallywhen she wanted me to do thesame. Now as a Mom in a familywhere we need to watch everypenny carefully, I realize what agift Mom has and hope that I canbe more like that, and my childrencan see that in me. She, like myDad, always felt we were blessedenough to share with others. Theyhave passed on a rich heritage ofsharing all that God has blessedus with. I pray that I continue topass that rich heritage on to mychildren.Elizabeth Ulmet Bird★ ★ ★“I will forever be grateful to Billand Kathy Ulmet. Not only arethey my father-in-law and motherin-law,but also the Pastor andspouse under whose ministry Jesusbecame my Savior. They showedme such great love as they invitedme into their home for many mealsas a college student. I was datingtheir youngest daughter, Elizabeth(much to Bill's chagrin), while incollege and they adopted me intotheir family. What a blessing tohave my future father-in-law walkwith me through the first steps ofmy new life in Christ. My salvationexperience was later followed by acall to the life of a Pastor. I am surethere are many people who havebeen blessed by their ministry. Ipray that one day I will be able tolook back over many years of marriageand ministry and have peoplefeel the same way about me andmy wife as I feel about my fatherin-lawand mother-in-law.”Andy Bird★ ★ ★When I think about my parentsI can't help but smile becauseof the memories I have. She is marriedto Todd Craig who pastors the Jamestown, Tenn.Church of the Nazarene.seem to balance one another out.I think about the fact that growingup we did not have a lot of money,yet money was never a decider forimportant decisions like college.Our parents told us we would goto college and all four of us graduatedfrom Olivet Nazarene Universityand never got kicked out forfinancial reasons. (That is a miracleof God).My dad was very strict on us growingup, and I would hear peoplesay, "He's strict but he loves hisgirls!" This was a very true statement.I knew my dad loved us andwanted so badly to shield us frompoor decisions.Recently my parents have movedto Tennessee where they are nowour neighbors. I now get to frequentlyshare a meal, conversationor walk with them. This has beensuch a blessing to my husband andme and our children as they get tosee Christian faith in their grandparents.My boys, who are 15 and13 years of age, find a lot of humorin "Grandpa Bill" as he comes upthe hill to our house to frequentlytake out our trash and get a snackthat is better than the one in hishouse just down the hill.Recently one of my friends was visitingfrom out of town, and my dadjust bluntly asked her how she wastreating Jesus. I watched as shewas uncomfortable, and we talkedtogether of her need to be closer toJesus. My friend later commentedthat she really felt convicted whenmy dad talked to her. I realizedthat maybe I need to be bolder inmy approach about Jesus and realizedhow important it is not to missopportunities for a changed life.Recently my dad was covering fora church that was without a pastor.I listened to him make countlessphone calls and trips to the churchor hospital to check on people inthe church on a non-church day.He is not just a Sunday or Wednes-6 / EVANGELISTS' PERSPECTIVE / Winter 2012

day kind of person to cover. He willgive 105%. Even though this wasnot expected, he did it anyway tothe glory of God.My mom has a different kind ofministry. She sends notes for manydifferent occasions. She prettymuch knows special days of manyacross this country and she celebratesand encourages so many.I feel so blessed to have a legacy ofloving Jesus in my heritage. I amso thankful for my parents and howthey minister to others all over thecountry.Angela Ulmet Craig★ ★ ★When thinking back to memoriesfrom the past 45 years, I believethe biggest characteristic of mymom and dad that stands outis their outreach. They alwayswelcomed people into our homewhether it was for a meal, a day,or even months. I don't believeanyone has ever asked them forsomething to which there wasn'ta prompt reply of some sort. Iremember not understanding howmy parents could be so givingwhen we didn't have that muchourselves. However, so many timeswe would see blessings bestowedupon our family that would nothave been nearly as divine had wenot given most of what we had.The faith that they portrayed ispriceless. Even though the oddswere stacked against them somany times, they continually hadfaith in God, that he would notleave us or forsake us. Even introubling times, their faith did notwaiver, and it never occurred toany of us girls to turn our backs onGod and believe something else. Itwas quite evident to anyone whocame into contact with our familyfor very long that the foundationof our "home" was built on ChristJesus. They were never ashamedand taught us never to fear standingup for our Lord.Another quality I am reminded of istheir constant passion for scriptureand prayer. Many times I wouldhear Dad muttering a prayer or seemy mother quietly crying in a chairwith her Bible open. They soughtGod for every decision and detailof our lives and depended on theirdaily quiet times for answers totough decisions. This trait was alsopassed down from our grandparents,and it is a quality that continuallychallenges me in my ownspiritual walk.No family is not without its issues,and to say we were problem freewould be a false claim. One thingI can say is that through all of thepast trials, struggles, pains, andhardships our family has faced,we all still ask God for directionand guidance in how to react andrespond. I believe this is a testamentto a Mom and Dad that loveJesus more than anything else. Iam so thankful that they continuallypointed us to Christ for everydecision and crossroad we faced.I was privileged and blessed to beable to have mom and dad livenearby when our family was goingthrough a traumatic time withsome of our children. They selflesslygave of their time, love, andprayers. It would have been easy tobe judgmental, or try to explain allof the things that they thought weshould do differently, but insteadthey consistently helped us bysupporting us, spending time withour children, and sometimes justlistening. I will hold the memoriesdear to my heart and am thankfulfor each day/week we get to spendwith them.Michel Ulmet Maroon★ ★ ★William Aleck Ulmet (Bill) andKathleen Louise Morris Ulmet(Kathy) were both children of pastors.Their early lives were spentin many different places in Indianaand Iowa, as they both grew upwith four siblings each and parentswho poured their lives intoministry. In the early 1960’s theyfound each other in high school inOskaloosa, Iowa. Bill’s father, thelate Aleck George Ulmet, was thepastor of Oskaloosa Church of theNazarene while Kathy’s father wasa professor at William Penn College,and both her mother and fatherwere dedicated to ministry inQuaker and Friends’ congregations.Bill was a basketball jock whosehigh school records were not beatenfor many years after graduation.Kathy was the head cheerleaderand homecoming queen. It wasMother’s day of their high schoolsenior year that they both bowedat an altar giving their hearts toChrist, and the rest of their livesthey have held onto and dugdeeper into that commitment.At a very early age, they foundthemselves married, at Olivet NazareneCollege, with a baby on theway. Bill & Kathy Ulmet C O N T I N U E Dthe night shift at the state mentalhealth facility in the criminallyinsane ward, and lettered in foursports, while Kathy stayed homewith their precious newborn whowould become the first of fourchildren and took modeling sidejobs. Bill was a guard on the firstintercollegiate basketball team hissenior year at ONC (now ONU) andwas later inducted into the ONUHall of Fame.Life was difficult as there was littlemoney and precious little time together.However, soon after graduationin ’67 they found themselvesin teaching and coaching positionsin Buffalo, Illinois. While there theyattended Springfield First Nazarenewhere Kathy taught a 3rd gradeboys Sunday School class andBill worked with the teens. Theymoved back to Oskaloosa, Iowa in1968 where they grew their familyfrom three to six. Bill taught mathand coached boys basketball/baseball and girls’ golf and softball.They were mentored and loved onby Nazarene pastors and familiesthat gave them so much. Two oftheir pastors included Jim Diehl,and Gary Henecke.It was somewhere in this 8-yeartime span in Oskaloosa, Iowathat God began working on Bill’sheart. He had students, teachers,and community members that hetalked to about Christ. Studentswould, years later, write letters to‘Coach Ulmet’ thanking him for hisdedication to God, and asking himmore about his faith. It was obviousthat Bill had the gift of evangelism.And as God moved in onhim…God was preparing Kathy’sheart as well. She became such agiver to those around her. Birthdaycards, sympathy cards, kind wordsto the hurting, opening her hometo those less fortunate, feeding thehungry, and providing hospitalityjust became part of her life regimen.Thoughts from eldest daughter,Teresa…I am the eldest daughter of Billand Kathy. I always tell Dad that Ihelped raise him! When you readsome of the things that my sisterstell you, – you will understand.I will never forget the struggle, theprayer times that Dad would gothrough as he wrestled with hiscall to ministry. His father, a pastorand later District Superintendenton the Kentucky District, told Dad,“Son, if you can stay out of hell andnot preach – do it.” Dad knew thatthe call was heavy on his heart.He could not walk away from it. Iremember filling in at Nazarenechurches in Iowa as Dad workedon his course of study. We hadwonderful Sundays in the homesof congregation members whowould welcome us and care for us.Then, Dad would teach on Mondaymorning, and we would file off toschool.Dad was eventually called to achurch in Catlett, Virginia wherewe made our home from May of1975 – May of 1978. It was a beautifulstart. We lived in a beautifulparsonage right next to the churchthat ended up growing and building.Mom taught Sunday Schooland took all of us to the WarrentonNursing Home where she wouldteach, we would sing, and carefor the hearts of those who wereaging.In May of 1978 we moved to pastorUniversity Park church of theNazarene in Wichita Falls, TX whereagain the church grew and builton. We were all active on the WestPictured back row, Ken, Tanner 20, Teresa, front row,Brendon Myers holding Makenna, Mary Myers, Tate18. Teresa is an ordained elder serving as High SchoolPastor and is married to Ken Garner, an ordained elderserving as the Executive Pastor in the same church –Jackson First Church of the Nazarene, MI. They havetwo children, Tanner and Tate. They are both at OlivetNazarene University.Texas District. Mom worked withchoir and special music, teaching aSunday School class and ministeringin four different nursing homes.The partnership in ministry thatI saw between my mom and dadhas yielded the fruit that I see inmy own home and the homes ofmy siblings. We all work togetherin our areas of giftedness for theKingdom of God. We served in thiscapacity until 1981.It was in October of my high schoolsenior year that we moved fromTexas to New Castle, Ind. Keep inmind that at the time we weremoving north – everyone else wasmoving south! It was a difficulttransition, but I remember God’spromises of protection and guidancebeing so real to me duringthat time. Dad pastored the SouthsideChurch while mom taught aSunday School Class, started theTeen Bible Quiz program, andtransported teens to the weeklyearly morning prayer meetingsstarted by their younger three girlsbefore school.August of 1986 through Septemberof 1993, Dad pastored the Rock84 / EVANGELISTS' PERSPECTIVE / Winter Fall 2012 2012

Hill West Main Church of the Nazarenein South Carolina. Mom hadgone back to school to receive herB.S. and Master’s degrees in SpeechPathology. She worked for a clinicthere while the two youngest ofthe girls were at home, and thetwo oldest were at Olivet NazareneUniversity.During all of this time, Dad wasalways an evangelism enthusiastpromoting revivals in each churchhe attended and pastored, holdingmeetings himself through theyears. Then, the Lord called dadinto evangelism. Since Septemberof 1993 to the present Dad hasbeen a full-time, tenured evangelist.Mom traveled with dad untilJune of 2002, providing music andprayer support. Then, she eventuallylived close to Michel and herfamily where she worked, providedmedical coverage, and helpedMichel with the children. Since thattime, Mom has retired, and theyhave a home on the same plot ofland where Angela, Todd, and theboys live.Both of my parents taught meseveral lessons throughout myyears at home. First, no one was astranger. We welcomed people intoour home for meals, for rest, for fun.We gave people a home when theyhad none. Countless people livedwith us as we tried to get themback on their feet. I believe that iswhy we understood/understandclearly the command in James totake care of the widow and theorphan. Each daughter and familyhas taken seriously the challengeto do the same.Next, there were two truths thatwere obvious from day one. God isfirst. There is no other priority thatis greater than Him. He is all! He iseverything! And, closely followingwas the fact that we were loved.Though I remember Dad as beingso strict when we were young,I also remember laughter, greataffection, long talks into the nightthat often ended in prayer, andprecious memories of grandparents,uncles and aunts, cousins, andvarious other family members andfriends that surrounded us withlove, prayer, and affection.Thanks mom and dad. I love you.Thank you for believing in holiness,in women in ministry, andin reaching and providing for thelost spiritually and physically. Mylife is rich with memories and fullof future promise because of yourcommitments to Jesus!Teresa Beth Garner★ ★ ★It was my privilege to recruitBill Ulmet to Oskaloosa, Iowaas a high school teacher, varsitybasketball coach, and member ofOskaloosa First church. Bill (andhis wonderful wife, Kathy) made atremendous impact on that congregationwith their enthusiasm,warmth, evangelistic spirit, andjoyful attitudes. They were truly"spiritual spark plugs" in that finechurch.After taking the High school basketballteam "from cellar dwellers"to "conference champs" (and awhole lot more!), the day camewhen the local newspaper printedan article with this headline, "UlmetTrades ( basketball) Bench forPulpit.” This enthusiastic basketballcoach and contagious Christianhad been called into the full timeministry by the Holy Spirit. Thatwas a sad day for Oskaloosa buta blessed day for the Kingdom ofGod!Bill Ulmet has served as an effectivepastor, but his greater gift is thatof evangelism. For several decadesBill has been anointed by God as anevangelist who confronts congregationswith the claims of the gospelbut always wrapped in a spiritof love. The same "fire in the belly"of this basketball coach is now "firein the heart" of this Godly evangelist.He has been greatly usedby God in winning men, women,teens, and children to Christ thenchallenging them to "run for thegold" in this Christian race. Rightby his side has been his Spirit-filledwife, Kathy, who also brought heramazing set of God-given gifts tothis ministerial calling.Bill and Kathy Ulmet have beenGod's gift to the Church of theNazarene for over 40 years. I honorthem today not only as effectiveevangelists, but as two peoplewho have had a very powerful andpositive influence on my life. NowI'm so thankful that Bill "traded thebench for the pulpit"! The Kingdomof God has greatly grown andbenefited because this young, successfulbasketball coach said a total"yes" to the will of God.James H. A SHOELACE LESSONby Dr. Harold DeMottOur doctrinal distinctive. That was howmy pastor described it when I was justa kid. While I did not know then muchabout the doctrine, I did understanddistinctive. It did not mean that we werecompletely different from other Evangelicaldenominations, but we did have a particularcalling and a particular doctrine.We believed in imparted grace. We believedin a genuinely transformed life. Webelieved that God really did change ourhearts. We believed in holiness.Early in my life I received Jesus Christ asa personal savior. Like many, I struggledthrough my teen years and finally cameto a full surrender to the Lord in Seminary.In response to my full surrender, theHoly Spirit sanctified me wholly, filled mewith His presence and cleansed my heart.From that moment I experienced Hispresence and power.I believed completely in the Holinessmessage, and as a pastor, attempted topreach it clearly. Like many of my fellowpastors, I sought an illustration thatwould be simple enough to understandand at the same time complete enoughto be effective. I stumbled upon just suchan illustration one day in our garage.I was making one more attempt to cleanthe garage when I came across my son’sfootball shoes. They were a mess, muddyand worn. It was as if the Spirit said, “Takethe shoelace.” So I did.I asked, “If this shoelace is my life and Iwant to restore it to new condition, whatshould I do?” Well, first I washed it. That iswhat Jesus does for us. He washes us andtakes away the mess of our sin.“And that is what some of you were. Butyou were washed, you were sanctified,you were justified in the name of theLord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of ourGod.”(1Co 6:11 NIV)“…he saved us, not because of righteousthings we had done, but because of hismercy. He saved us through the washingof rebirth …”( Tit 3:5 NIV)So, I washed the shoelace. I used detergent,I used bleach, I used whitener.When I was finished, I think the shoelacethought it was finished. I remember wellthat when the Lord was washing away mysin, Satan told me that He was also washingaway all my friends, all my future, andall my plans and dreams. Again I was reminded of what God did in my ownlife. He applied heat and pressure and steam. Hetugged and pulled. The result was that I begangrowing in the Lord.“Therefore, dear friends, since you already knowthis, be on your guard so that you may not be carriedaway by the error of lawless men and fall fromyour secure position.” (2 Pet 3:17 NIV)“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lordand Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both nowand forever! Amen.” (2Pet 3:18 NIV)Growing in grace is not easy business. The Lorduses all manner of circumstances and conditionsto develop character within us. He is not so muchinterested in our comfort as in our character.Now, I had not gone far with the ironing processwhen the point of the iron stopped at a knot.The shoelace had somehow become knotted. Iwas reminded that God created mankind to livein fellowship with him. Even our upright statureteaches us that we were meant to gaze into theface of God. After Adam sinned, God came intothe garden and called to him. Adam was hiding.I think Adam hid like my granddaughter used tohide. She would cover her eyes, and because shecould not see me, she thought I could not see her.Adam bowed his head … slumped his shouldersand cowered, thinking that he was hiding fromGod. Not only did Adam turn away from God, heturned all the way in upon himself until in selfishness,his heart was tied in a knot.So I set about to untie the knot. It was tight andvery difficult. With some pliers I grabbed one sideand with an awl I poked and pried until I was ableto release the knot. Again I was reminded of thefull surrender in my own life. I had tried to surrender… mostly to the Lord. “You can do anythingwith my life, except pinch me, or use anythingsharp, or …” Well, you get the point. Finally, I said“yes” to anything God needed to do to untie theknot in my heart. He could pull, pry, tug, probe,turn me upside down. I only wanted victory. Thenit hit me. This is perfect. The knot was gone, butno one could say exactly where. How many timeshad I heard someone ask, “If sin is eradicated howcan it come back?” Well, the knot had no ontologicalexistence. It was not possible to lay theshoelace at one end of my desk and the knot atthe other end. The knot was a condition of theshoelace, not something in and of itself. It is possiblefor a person to turn again away from God,turn all the way in upon themselves and tie theirheart once again in a knot.With the knot gone, I was now able to return tothe task of ironing. Growth in grace never stops.Pressure, heat, steam, stretching and pulling.These are a way of life for a growing Christian.Finally, I was ready to lay the shoelace next to onejust taken from the package. Sadly, the shoelaceon which I had worked so hard did not look likethe new one. It was frayed, the aglets were gone,it just looked bad. Once again Paul helped me.“Not that I have already obtained all this, or havealready been made perfect, but I press on to takehold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold ofme.” (Phil 3:12 NIV)“Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have takenhold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting whatis behind and straining toward what is ahead, Phil3:14 (NIV) I press on toward the goal to win theprize for which God has called me heavenward inChrist Jesus.” (Phil 3:13 NIV)Much of the damage of sin remains in our lives.Our intellect is darkened. Our emotions are damaged.We see as through a darkened glass. Muchis left yet to be done. Thankfully, the grand sweepof salvation includes glorification. One day all willbe fully restored. You say, “Who would they be?” Now, it’s really a big camp meeting, so we need the very best in the way of workers.Let’s start with Stuart McWhirter who has a memory like a vault, world-traveled with a mind not unlike a library and a delivery that is stunning.Now, let’s lighten this thing up a bit with a sort of Uncle Bud and a Will Rogers combination with a million-dollar smile. Of course that would be BobHoots. This combination can play off each other in a dramatic fun-filled, yet deeply convicting way. Now we need an experienced Song Evangelist thatunderstands the camp meeting way of doing things. He can set the stage for the preaching and has a feeling for the altar call. Well, I understand theygot Ralph Dunmire. Wow, what a team. You may say, “Chuck, are you dreaming?” Well, yes and no. And you may want to know where this campmeeting is going on. Well, all of them got the call years ago and booked the camp in their little date books we all carry. The meeting just started inheaven. As usual Bob was late, but who cares. He always was worth waiting for. Stuart was flying high when he got there, and as usual Bob cheeredhim on. Ralph was all smiles. TheseU.S. army soldiers are once again focusing on “This We’ll Defend” theirofficial motto written in small print on their seal. Most Americansrecognize “Semper Fidelis” (Always Faithful) or the shortened version,“Semper Fi” of the U.S. Marines. The U.S. Coast Guard has the similarLatin motto of “Semper Paratus” (Always Prepared). The core valuesof the U.S. Navy are “Honor, Courage, Commitment.” The U.S. Air Forceembraces the core values of “Integrity First, Service Before Self, Excellencein All We Do.” We as Christians would do well to apply the aforementionedmottos and core values to our lives as well. The apostlePaul writes to the Philippian church about “defending” and confirmingthe Gospel.”(Philippians 1:7) In II Timothy 4:2 Paul tells Timothy to“be prepared” in season and out of season.” Frederick W. Faber in hisbeloved hymn wrote, “Faith of our fathers! Holy Faith! These are the qualities of aholy life.However, the word “holiness” andits cognate term “sanctification”have lost their attractiveness dueto misrepresentation by thosewho are opposed to their truemeaning. C. S. Lewis said, “Ratherthen rejoice at the very notionof holiness; sinners scheme toambush and attack it.”….Goodwords often suffer what Lewiscalled “verbicide,” the willfuldestruction of a word’s meaning.Quoting Oliver Wendell Holmes,he said: “Life and language arealike sacred. Homicide and verbicide—thatis—violent treatmentof a word with fatal results to itslegitimate meaning—are alikeforbidden.” Lewis declared, “Wecannot stop the verbicides. Themost we can do is not to imitatethem.”Why does God call us to holiness?Why did He provide redemptionfor man to be restored to thishigh and holy state of grace?Man is not the man he was madeto be until he is in his right andnormal relationship with God.Samuel Chadwick said, “The morea sinner a man is, the less a manthat sinner is.” Man’s purpose,happiness, and felicity are beingat one with his Creator. Holinessis the only quality of characterthat can please God and providefellowship with God, and it is theonly quality of character that willfully and permanently satisfyman.There would be no pleasure fora bird if there was not air for itto fly in or a fish without waterto swim in, and so it is with man.There could be no pleasure forman if there is no presence ofGod in his soul or likeness of Godin his nature.God created this world for man’senjoyment, but He created manto share with him His glory andenjoy sweet fellowship and communionwith one another. Godnever created even an angel tofill the place man is to fill. “Forunto which of the angels saidHe at anytime, thou art my son;this day have I begotten thee?”Hebrews 1:5How can we have communionwith a holy God while grovelingin the things of earth and livingbelow the favor of His love? “Cantwo walk together except theybe agreed?” In order for God andman to walk together in holysplendor some things must beheld in common. We are calledto worship the Lord in the beautyof holiness. The highest exerciseof which man is capable is theprivilege of worship. Christ is theonly person to walk upon theearth that man can bow downand worship without committingidolatry. That is because Heis holy, and we can worship Himfrom a holy heart. No being, howevergreat or wise, could everbecome the object of the adorationand worship of man if in thatbeing there could be found anymoral imperfection whatsoever.On the other hand, it takes thegrace of entire sanctification andof imparted righteousness to fitman for this highest exercise.How important it is to heedthe call to holiness. The priceGod paid to redeem fallen manspeaks loudly concerning theurgency of this call. It is notoptional but essential if man isever to be as he was created. Ifman rejects this call to holiness,he likewise rejects the one whoextends the call. The Apostle Paulsaid: “God has not called us untouncleanness, but unto holiness.He therefore that despiseth,(rejects) despiseth not man, butGod, who has given us his HolySpirit.” (I Thessalonians 4:7-8)Eternally lost man will foreverbe something other than he wascreated to be.Dr. C. W. Butler said: “The mostterrifying picture of an eternallylost soul is depicted in the wordsof the inspired writer, ‘They restnot, day nor night.’ This eternalunrest of a lost soul consists ofdespair without hope, darknesswithout light, sorrow withoutany alleviation. It will be sin letloose on itself, without any of themollifying influences of the presenceof righteousness.” However,heaven represents to us eternalrest; not the rest of inactivity, butthe rest of perfect harmony, theabsence of all friction and care,the presence of fullness of joy.God has provided for us to beholy through the sacrifice of HisSon. Let us, by a supreme moralchoice and a humble faith, appropriatethe provisions He hasmade. Hate Speech C O N T I N U E Dyou have to hate somebody to not proselytize?How much do you have to hate somebody tobelieve everlasting life is possible and not tellthem that?“I mean, if I believed, beyond the shadow of adoubt, that a truck was coming at you, and youdidn’t believe that truck was bearing down onyou, there is a certain point where I tackle you.And this is more important than that.” 3Yes, this is eternally more important thanavoiding being hit with a truck. MaybePenn has something here. Maybe there issomething we can call “hate non-speech.” Ibelieve Franklin Graham would agree with theatheist on at least this point, for he said, “Eachperson we meet on a daily basis who doesnot know Christ is hell-bound. That may makesome folks bristle, but it's a fact. When werefuse to warn people that their actions andlifestyles have eternal consequences, we'renot doing them any favors. If everybody feelsgood about his or her sin, why would anyonerepent?” 4Maybe we all need to re-focus on Franklin’sterm “hell-bound.” When I was a boy I wouldride in my dad’s truck as we passed by theopen doors of the Chicago and Gary, Ind. steelmills. I would watch the men as they tendedthe blast furnaces and came so close to theflames. To me it was a frightening thoughtthat sinners would suffer in the flames of hell.When Jesus spoke of that place he used theever present reminder just outside the walls ofJerusalem, mentioning Gehenna twelve times.The early evangelists had a vivid picture of theconsequences of sin. That picture helped tomotivate them as they spread the Gospel tothe uttermost parts of the earth.William Booth, the founder of the SalvationArmy, is said to have made the commentthat if it were possible, he would dangle hisstreet evangelists over hell for twenty minutesbefore going out in the streets. Evangelist C.H.Spurgeon uses the following illustration of asurgeon who knows his patient is dying butfails to warn him for fear of offending him:“Ho, Ho, Sir Surgeon. You are too delicate to tellthe man that he is ill. You hope to heal the sickwithout their knowing it. You therefore flatterthem. And what happens? They laugh at you.They dance upon their own graves and at lastthey die. Your delicacy is cruelty; your flatteriesare poisons; you are a murderer. Shall we keepmen in a fool's paradise? Shall we lull them intosoft slumber from which they will awake in hell?Are we to become helpers of their damnationby our smooth speeches? In the name of Godwe will not. If sinners will be damned, at leastlet them leap to hell over our bodies. And if theywill perish, let them perish with our arms aroundtheir knees, imploring them to stay. CHURCHES NEED REVIVALby DR. NORMAN MOOREPurposefully scheduled services focused onrevival can be tremendously productive. Bothevangelism and renewal can result from thesespecific efforts.1. The need is severe. Lost people need to besaved. Many churches go an entire yearwithout any new people being saved andbaptized.2. Believers need to be sanctified, and live acommitted, Spirit-filled life. The cleansing,indwelling power and presence of the HolySpirit must continue to be preached andexperienced.3. Congregations need renewal. Apathy, stagnation,disunity, neglect and decline characterizemany churches. In some churchesthe average Sunday morning worship attendanceand membership are smaller thanthey were ten years ago. Both pastor andpeople can benefit from hearing a differentvoice.Is there a solution? Yes! A genuine workingof the Holy Spirit in individual hearts and theentire life of the local church is the answer!This renewing work can be accomplished inthe context of purposefully scheduled revivalservices, saturated in persistent prayer! Theunique giftedness of a God-called evangelistis valuable in both the proclamation and thealtar-call.Objections or obstacles often target the difficultyof securing commitment among thepeople for week-night attendance. Church financesalso cause people to question their abilityto pay for the expenses of a revival. Perhapsthese are more excuses than valid reasons.In regards to the attendance difficulty, advancedplanning and tailored scheduling thatgives strong consideration to peoples’ timedemands is very helpful.In regards to stretched church finances, again,advanced planning, along with prioritizedbudgeting and allocation are necessary. The financialissue can also be lessened when severalchurches cooperate in a combined area revival.Also, the evangelist may have Ministry Partnerswho surround him or her with prayer andfinancial support.Genuine revival can make a substantial differencein a local church.
