y W.E. McCumberThe Jesusof ActsActs, like the Gospel of Luke,is addressed to “Theophilus.”The name means a lover ofGod, and his identity remains a mystery. The Gospel is about the earthlymission of Jesus prior to his ascension.Acts is about the earthly missionof Jesus after his ascension. Themission was being conducted bythe church, especially the apostles,in the power and under the guidanceof the Holy Spirit. Acts begins, therefore, with the going of Jesusto the Father and the coming of theSpirit to the church. Two tremendous promises bejewelthe opening chapter. The firstis made by Jesus to his followers:“You will receive power when theHoly Spirit comes on you; and youwill be my witnesses at Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, andto the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).Having said this, Jesus was taken upbefore their very eyes, and a cloudhid him from their sight. The secondpromise was then spoken by twomen dressed in white (doubtlessangels) who addressed the upwardgazingdisciples, saying, “This sameJesus, who has been taken from youinto heaven, will come back in thesame way you have seen him gointo heaven” (Acts 1:11). Until Jesusreturns the church is duty-bound tobear witness to him throughout theworld, for he is Jesus for everybodywho will believe in him.Today’s church should witnessto this same Jesus, not to aJesus who has been reinvented orreinterpreted by men who want tomake the gospel message inoffensiveto scoffers. When the Holy Spiritcame at Pentecost, Simon Peter hadthe privilege of preaching the firstdistinctively Christian sermon. Hissubject was “Jesus of Nazareth” –Jesus who was crucified, Jesus whobwas raised from the dead, Jesuswho was exalted to the right handof God, Jesus who had poured outthe Holy Spirit upon the church, Jesuswho had been made “both Lordand Messiah” (Acts 2:36). Then Peterurged his listeners to repent andbe baptized in the name of JesusChrist – the very name that Jewishleaders had libeled with hateful accusationsof gluttony, drunkenness, demon possession, blasphemy andsedition. About three thousand ofPeter’s listeners were baptized andadded to the church that day.“In the name of Jesus Christ” Petercommanded a crippled beggarto walk. The beggar did more thanwalk. He entered the temple courts“walking and jumping and praisingGod” (Act 3:8). The miracle drew acrowd and Peter delivered anothermessage, once again emphasizingthe crucifixion and resurrection ofJesus, whom he calls the Holy andRighteous One. Disclaiming anypersonal power and holiness as thesource of the miracle, Peter said, “Byfaith in the name of Jesus, this manwhom you see and know was madestrong” (Acts 3:16). Brought beforerulers Peter declared, “It is Jesus’name and the faith that comesthrough him that comes throughhim that has completely healedhim.” He then affirmed that salvationis found in...no other name. Therulers commanded Peter and Johnto speak no longer to anyone inthis name. Upon their release, andjoined by friends, they petitionedGod to enable their continuedwitness and to confirm their messageby further “signs and wondersthrough the name of your holyservant Jesus” (Acts 4:30).Their civil disobedienceprompted a second arrest. Peter defendedtheir ministry as obedienceto higher orders. They disobeyedmen’s command for silence becausethey were under God’s commandto speak. The angry rulers had themflogged, but the intrepid apostlesleft court “rejoicing because theyhad been counted worthy of sufferingdisgrace for the Name” (Acts5:41).The name of Jesus is a prominentmotif in Acts. Naida Hearnsang of Jesus, name above allnames. That is how the name ofJesus appears in Acts.It occurs some twenty-onetimes. The name was feared by theworld and honored by the church. In his name the lost were savedand the saved were strengthened. In the name the apostles prayed, preached, healed, and baptized. For his name they endured prison, torture and death. The first Christian martyr wasStephan,(continued on next page)4 / EVANGELISTS' PERSPECTIVE / Fall 2011

The Jesus of Acts C O N T I N U E Dstoned to death by an angry mob who branded him ablasphemer. Facing death, he “looked up to heaven andsaw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the righthand of God” (Acts 7:55). Elsewhere Jesus is pictured asseated at God’s right hand. Here he stands to receive afaithful witness who prayed, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. In splendid emulation of Jesus’ love, Stephan prayed forhis executioners, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them”(Acts 7:60).Three significant conversions are recorded in chapterseight through ten. The first is that of an Ethiopian official, guided in his understanding of scripture by Philip. The official was reading Isaiah and was puzzled by a passageabout the Suffering Servant of God. Launching hiswitness from that very passage, Philip told him the goodnews about Jesus. The official believed and, according tohis request, Philip baptized him.The third conversion is that of another Gentile “Godfearer,” a Roman army officer named Cornelius. An angeldirected him to send for Peter and the Holy Spirit directedPeter to visit him. Peter preached to him and hisassembled household “the good news of peace throughJesus Christ, who is Lord of all.” He spoke of the crucifixionand resurrection, and declared that God had appointedJesus to be the “judge of the living and the dead.”Convinced that these listeners believed, Peter orderedtheir baptism “in the name of Jesus Christ” (Acts 10:36, 42,48).Wedged between these stories is an account of Saul’sconversion, which is recounted twice more in Acts. (Saulis called Paul during his consequent ministry to the Gentilesas evangelist and church planter par-excellence.)Common to all three accounts of his conversion is Paul’squestion, “Who are you, Lord?” and the Lord’s reply, “I amJesus whom you are persecuting.” Paul temporarily losthis sight but permanently gained an insight that endedhis career as a persecutor and started his career as apreacher. “At once he began to preach in the synagoguesthat Jesus is the Son of God” (Acts 9:20). He insistedthat what he preached about Jesus had been foretoldby Moses and the prophets, namely, his crucifixion andresurrection as a saving light to both Jews and Gentiles.Through Paul’s zealous advocacy of the gospel men andwomen would be forgiven and sanctified in many Gentilecities.Paul’s ministry as a servant of Jesus dominates Acts13-28. While he and Barnabas were “on staff” at thechurch in Antioch, they were called to missionary work.To all who would listen he declared that “throughJesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you” (Acts13:38). Many believed and were saved. Many others opposedand Paul was jailed, beaten, stoned, and almostkilled several times. He probably knew the interior ofmore jails than any other man of his time and place. Onone occasion he was sprung from jail by a timely earthquake, but he did not leave until the jailer and his familyhad been converted and baptized. “Believe in the LordJesus,” Paul told him, “and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).Paul never so much as hinted that any person could besaved from sin and death by believing in anyone otherthan Jesus. We learn from Paul’s letter to the Romans that hewanted to visit Rome on his way to Spain with the gospel. He didn’t get to Spain but he got to Rome, and theclosing chapters of Acts tell us how. Arrested in Jerusalem,he was saved from a lynch mob by Roman soldiers, and consequently placed on trial before governors Felixand Festus and King Agrippa. Paul exercised his right as aRoman citizen to appeal to Caesar, so he was shipped outunder heavy guard to Rome. A storm wrecked the ship, delaying but not aborting the journey. Acts ends up withPaul under house arrest at Rome for two years. Therehe welcomed visitors, and to all who came he boldlypreached the kingdom of God and taught about the LordJesus Christ. The collection of letters that bears Paul’s name indicatesthe content of that preaching and teaching.A greater Jesus than Acts proclaims has never beenimagined or described. All deviations from this Jesushave lessened and falsified Him. ★W.E. McCumber served the Church of the Nazarene for over 69 yearsas preacher, college professor, revivalist, conference speaker, radiospeaker, writer and magazine editor. On December 18, 2010 he suffereda massive stroke and never recovered. “Brother Bill” has been afriend and encourager of the Evangelists’ Perspective magazine. Hisarticles have blessed and challenged all of us. His home going servicewas a blessed time of reflection and inspiration to all of us in attendance. There was much laughter and rejoicing in knowing where ourfriend and loved one would be celebrating Christmas and the NewYear. The service reached a grand crescendo as song evangelist BrianArner sang, “And Can It Be”. Yes, there was shouting and praising Godfor a life lived in the beauty of holiness.Fall 2011 / EVANGELISTS' PERSPECTIVE / 5

E P F E A T U R E A R T I C L ECHUCK & JEANNEM I L L H U F FA StoryWrittenby GodThe windows of ourchurch were crankedopen as wide as possible, with all fans circulatingat full capacitythat hot, July morning in l957. Itwould be a packed house at FirstChurch of the Nazarene, Peoria,Illinois - the special attraction:the Viking Quartet and trombonetrio from Olivet Nazarene College. On occasion, Ruth Stock, ourorganist would ask me to fill in atthe organ while she played thepiano. This was such a morning. It was exactly one month until fallsemester at Olivet would begin, and I was planning to be a freshmanthere. From my vantage point onthe organ bench, I had a full viewof the rear door of the sanctuarywhen the members of the quartetentered and strode down theside aisle, three of them carryingtheir trombones. I could hear theclick of his steel caps on the heelsof his gleaming cordovan shoesas I turned to watch a tall, handsomeyoung man with black hairand intense dark eyes move to hisplace on the front row. He wasthe essence of self-assurance andcharm as he sent a smile in mydirection. Somewhat distracted,I reigned myself in, eager notto miss the cue for the openingsong. The performance thatfollowed was impressive. Theywere musically talented and welltrained, but something more: theywere sure of their message bothin testimony and song. When theyleaned in to the microphone tosing "Just a Little Talk with Jesus,"I was certain that going to Olivetwas going to be something akinto going to heaven. This was myfirst glimpse of Chuck Millhuff, and though I wanted with all myheart to be introduced to him asone of their prospective Olivetians,I slipped out the back doorand walked home, having avoidedany contact at all with the boyfrom Chicago.Several weeks later, duringthe first week of school, I saw himagain in the Universe, the studentcenter in the basement of ChapmanHall. Charlie James, my date, had gone to the counter to placeour order when suddenly Chuck6 / EVANGELISTS' PERSPECTIVE / Fall 2011

Millhuff brashly pulled a chair upclose to me and asked me to attendSunday morning church withhim the next day. Without hesitationI said yes, which was the firstof many to follow.I soon learned that ChuckMillhuff had a burning passion topreach...that beneath his appearancelay an unusual commitmentto God, a great yearning to touchthe lives of others, and an abundanceof natural talent and intelligence. The main focus of his lifewas to become an evangelist. Hehas never entertained any otheroptions. I was aware that somespeculated that this was impossible. He would be like "a meteorflashing across the horizon." Trustme; I knew for certain God hadhis hand on his future as well asmy own, and we went right onlooking forward to becoming allthat God had in mind for us to be.Now as we look back, we revel inthe grace of God that has producednearly 60 years in evangelism,a long and fruitful ministry, and a wonderful commitmentto each other that has lasted 54years.Walking Through the DoorHaving struggled throughyears of unsuccessful schooling inthe Chicago school system, Chuckwas determined to attend college. His lifelong friend Paul Cunningham*made it happen when thesummer before their freshmanyear (l956) he had said to Chuck,"Let's go to Olivet and roomtogether." From then on it wasthe major step in his goal: to bewell-educated for his profession. He soon learned while registeringthat his high school gradeswould prevent him from admission. On hearing this, Paul wentto the other end of the hall andmet President Harold W. Reed andpresented him with this proposition:"Could you give Chuck sixweeks to try in a probation periodand then make your decision?" heasked. Dr. Reed agreed, and thatact of kindness became the catalystfor a major change in Chuck'slife.During that six-week period,Evangelist C. William Fisher cameto hold the fall revival on thecampus. He was impressive. Hisarticulate speech and courtroomlikeapproach, as well as his fineappearance and musical abilitycaught Chuck's attention. Heplayed the trombone masterfully,as if the rest wasn't enough. Onemorning, with his back againstthe rear wall of the chapel in thebasement of Burke AdministrationBuilding, Chuck says he was "slainwith conviction by the message."A student stepped up beside himand asked, "Chuck, would you reallylike to be a Christian?" "I havefailed at this too many times," hesaid, his hands gripping the seatin front of him, clearly thinking itthrough.Chuck knew he had failed atmany things that appeared tomilitate against the possibility of aconsistent Christian life. His mindspanned the years: memories ofbeing sent home on his first dayof elementary school for misbehaving, failing the third gradewhen his twin brother went on tothe fourth (a stinging defeat laterrectified by a double promotion),longing to be an athlete but hisgrades sinking that dream timeand again. All of this culminatedin the ringing conclusion of hisCalumet High School counselorwho told him: “Charles, forgetcollege. You’re not college material.”Most of the goals he everhad were sabotaged by patternsof failure which would forevermark him as an outsider. Or soit seemed…unless God had thepower to make a difference. As aseven year old sitting in the sideof the horseshoe balcony with hisfamily in Chicago First Nazareneduring a revival with EvangelistU. E. Harding, Chuck had heardGod telling him that some day hewould be doing what that manwas doing, preaching as an evangelist. The one thing he was certainof was the call. The studenttouched his shoulder, “If I go withyou, would you go?” she asked. It was all he needed. He steppedout into the aisle, walked to thefront where (continued on next page)Fall 2011 / EVANGELISTS' PERSPECTIVE / 7

CHUCK & JEANNE MILLHUFFC O N T I N U E Dthe altar was completely filled, andknelt at one of the wooden foldingchairs in the first row. At thatpoint his life was radically changedforever. He cannot rememberwho the girl was, but he sure canremember what happened thatmorning. This conversion and thedynamic change that occurredbecause of it – the clarity of thecall, the power to finish, the graceto even excel in classes, the giftof preaching, the confirmation ofHis anointing, and the spiritualgrowth that followed – has beena capstone event for both of us aswe have followed these years ofministry. Not just because of whatit has meant to us personally, butbecause of the hope it continuallygives for each new potentialChristian we meet. Now, as acollege professor, I remain fullycommitted to the possibilities, thevision that my students can experiencesuch an encounter withGod who makesall things possible. As I look into thefaces of troubledand strugglingstudents, I can seeChuck.Throughoutthe years atOlivet, Chuck hada burning desire topreach, a characteristicthat continues to this day.He became a fixture in the officeof John Swearengen who wasthen vice president in charge ofchurch relations. Swearengen hadhuge hands and a big voice. He letChuck know time and again duringhis freshman year that he wasnot ready yet to represent OlivetNazarene College. This was nodeterrent to Chuck. He kept comingby until early in his sophomoreyear. After many others had turneddown the opportunity, Chuck acceptedhis first revival, a crusade inthe front room of a farmhouse inOwensville, Missouri, a Friday overSunday event. On return late Sundaynight, he burst into his dormitoryroom to announce to Paulwhat had happened. Six convertshad come to Christ.Chuck and I graduated fromOlivet in l960 – Chuck with adegree in speech and philosophyand I received a history and educationdegree. We were married inthe summer after which we immediatelymade our way to KansasCity to attend Nazarene Seminary.Equipping for Service: NazareneTheological SeminaryThe Nazarene Theological Seminary(NTS), located in Kansas City, gave Chuck a connection to theGeneral Headquarters and manyof the church's leaders. It wasa perspective that did much tocontribute to his ongoing commitmentto his denomination and itsdistinctive message that has neverwavered across the years.Beyond the three years that ittook to finish the degree, Chuckremembers individuals and leadersthat have affected his lifeforever. His message and theologywere "set in stone" by such professorsas President L.T. Corlett, Dr.Delbert Gish, Dr. Richard Taylor,Dr. James McGraw, Dean MendellTaylor, and Dr. Ralph Earle. Beyondthis were life-long friends suchas Melvin McCullough, Jim Bond,Tom Nees, Clary Kinzler, and PaulCunningham, fellow students whocontinue even to this day to offerlove and encouragement.During those years he averaged15 revivals a year as thefire burned hotter and hotter toassume the full-time profession ofevangelist. He held his first campmeetingfor Dr. John Knight onthe Florida District. Chuck at thattime was the fourth evangelist tograduate from NTS. Pastors OrvilleJenkins and C. William Ellwangergreatly encouraged the youngevangelist, giving him a chance topreach at First Church in KansasCity and recommending him toothers. He became the announcerfor several years on "Showers ofBlessing," which was the radiovoice of the Church of the Nazareneand eventually became thepreaching voice of the program.Chuck graduated from theseminary in l963 and immediatelyentered the field of evangelismfull time. He had received his firstEvangelist's Commission in l961and was ordained by Dr. Hardy C.Powers in l962. He returned to theSeminary to complete a Doctorof Ministry degree in l994. Previousto this he had been conferredthe Doctor of Divinity degree byMidAmerica Nazarene Universityin l981 for his extensive work innational and international evangelism. His preaching has taken himto many world areas.Following the CallIn l965, Chuck was approachedby the Billy Graham Associationafter preaching in Youth for Christ(YFC) rallies in Kansas City. He had8 / EVANGELISTS' PERSPECTIVE / Fall 2011

een recommended by Al Metsker, the Kansas City YFC director, tobecome a youth evangelist for theassociation. After spending threedays in Kansas City discussing theproposal with Grady Wilson, Graham'sclose friend, he declined. His final decision was that it wasnot a good fit for him because ofthe theological restraints that itwould place upon his preaching. This was a seminal moment in hiscareer.A great privilege of Chuck'sministry has been the chance topreach in the revivals of most ofour Nazarene colleges over theyears, in at least two of these collegesas many as a dozen times. He has a unique ability to reachthe minds and hearts of students. As one of my own students atMNU told me after a first chapelsermon in revival, "This guy reallyknows where it's at." We arestill blessed by the memory ofan offering in excess of $l00,000raised by the students and facultyas result of a challenge given tothem during a revival at SouthernNazarene University when the collegewas facing the possibility offinancial disaster.A gifted communicator, Chuckhas preached in some of the largestas well as the smallest churchesin North America, principallyfor the Nazarene denominationbut also in the wider evangelicalworld. I have often heard him say,"There are no small churches, onlysmall buildings."He held seven crusades forDr. Jerry Falwell in Thomas RoadBaptist Church and Liberty Universityin Virginia where he preachedhis well-known sermon, "GivingLiving." On every occasion, he wasalways introduced as a Nazareneevangelist. This providedfor the first time his exposure toAmerican and Canadian televisionministries which included tworevivals at "The People's Church"in Toronto.Ministering With a Street RodChuck has always had a deeplove for cars. Others that sharethis interest would call him a gearhead. Nearly 30 years ago heattended his first National StreetRod event in Tulsa with his closefriend, Pete Mustain. He wonderedwhy there was no churchservice during the Sunday morninghours and expressed this toPete. Pete agreed with him andcalled the owner of the Associationin California to suggest theidea. A church service for the nextyear's event was scheduled, andChuck was asked to be the firstever chaplain of the street rodders,a position held for 22 years. He preached to thousands everySaturday afternoon and Sundaymorning. It was great becauseit combined two things that heloved: cars and evangelism. Inaddition, he wrote a column in"Street Scene" magazine entitled"Thy Rod."Special ProjectsOver the years Chuck has writtensix books, numerous articles, and gospel songs. His deepfriendship with Bill Gaither led tothe collaboration in the writing ofsuch songs as "The King is Coming"and "The Family of God." Hehas been invited to participate inover 70 of Bill Gaither's Homecomingvideos. The best of Chuck'sown songs is perhaps "The Brush,"the story of his own conversion. He has produced countless musicaland preaching resources suchas "The Breath of God," a collectionof 700 biblical promises narratedby Chuck with orchestrations andpiano background by Jerry Nelson.Though Chuck has assumedmany roles in ministry, his greatesthas been as father and husband.Early on we established our homein Olathe, Kansas, where we havelived for the duration across thecreek from MidAmerica NazareneUniversity and two blocks fromthe Nazarene church, both ofwhich have been the center ofour lives. We have two children:Melinda, a fourth grade teacherand constant joy and support; andChip, a child and adolescent psychiatristand son to be proud of,who lives in Topeka along with hiswife Linda and our grandchildren:William, Alexandra, and Amelia.Together we have been a partof it all: the campmeetings, therevivals and the travel. For threemonths every summer we hit thecampmeeting trail. To this day weremember the mighty move ofthe Holy Spirit in convicting powerand grace as altars and front pewsfilled due to the anointed preachingand singing of Chuck, andthe evangelists we have workedalongside. It is a legacy of highestvalue to have known such an erain the history of our church. In recent years, Chuck wouldbe quick to (continued on next page)Fall 2011 / EVANGELISTS' PERSPECTIVE / 9

CHUCK & JEANNE MILLHUFFC O N T I N U E Dtell you that a cherished honorhas been the opportunity toserve as Revivalism Coordinatorfor Nazarene evangelists from2002 to 2009. Of special significancehas been the opportunityto attend the General Assemblyas a delegate on three occasions. He continues to carry a heartbreakingconcern for the cause ofrevivals and renewal for not onlythe church but for the men andwomen who fill the biblical officeof evangelist. The Millhuffs are like manyof you. We have lived with upsand downs, pinnacle momentsand setbacks, great unansweredquestions as well as the certaintiesof the faith. Illness and losshave dogged our steps at times.Difficult decisions and sometimeserrors in judgment have thrownus desperately to our knees tocall on the touch of God. Thatis the secret to finding our way.Looking back over the years, itis plain to see that this is a storywritten by God. ★*Paul Cunningham, General SuperintendentEmeritus, Church of theNazarene.Jeanne Millhuff, Professor Emeritus,MidAmerica Nazarene University.TRIBUTESEvangelist Chuck Millhuffwas cut from a single pattern ofcloth. That pattern was based on2 Tim. 4:5 where St. Paul counseledTimothy to "do the work ofan evangelist." From his studentdays in Olivet Nazarene College(now University) until this veryhour, Chuck Millhuff has faithfullyfulfilled his own calling to "do thework of an evangelist." Mind you, that pattern left plenty of room fororiginality, innovation, and creativity.Chuck is one of many who havegiven personality and expressionto evangelism in the Church of theNazarene. On the cutting edge ofevangelism in city-wide crusades, toglobe-trekking ministry in the fourcorners of the earth, Chuck refusedto allow his ministry to be limitedby the shackles of mediocrity. Hisexpressive communication wasaugmented by his love of music andsong writing. Who can forget "CyrusHampton," or "The Brush?" Neverone to settle in the long ruts of theordinary, Chuck blazed a wide pathas an evangelist. Clearly, he hasdone the work of an evangelist asa soul winner and preacher. Mostimportantly, he has passionatelyfollowed our Lord in both his callingand his personal life.J. K. WarrickGeneral SuperintendentI can never forget my firstencounter with this compellingspokesperson for God! He challengedthe students to consecratetheir lives to Christ and to also raisemoney to help Bethany NazareneCollege survive through a verydifficult financial crisis. Chuck hasalways issued a clarion call for holyliving and at the same time challengedus to relate in love to thelost. I cherish the story of Dr. Milhuffdelivering his wife's fresh homemadepies to their gay neighborsas he built grace-friendships withthem. We celebrate his passionatevoice for projecting the messageof heart-holiness while being opento new methods to deliver thatmessage. We deeply appreciate hisexceptional service to the Churchas spokesperson and advocate forthe God-called evangelists. From the day Chuck Millhuff walkedonto the campus of Olivet NazareneCollege, I knew we had a stronglygifted and highly spirited man onour hands! Those years at Olivetsaw Chuck become rooted andgrounded in Christ and his call toevangelism was clarified. What anevangelist he became! For many, many years he was "the Dean ofPreachers" in the Church of theNazarene. Thousands came to theLord under his ministry. The biggerthe platform, the more he excelled.I honor Chuck Millhuff for being atrue Holiness preacher, for stayingtrue to his calling to evangelism, and for staying true to the doctrinesof the Word of God. Chuck Millhuffhas left a very positive mark onthe Church of the Nazarene acrossNorth America for which I thankGod.Jim DiehlGeneral Superintendent EmeritusIt is noteworthy that I wasintroduced to Evangelist Chuck Millhuffby “Mr. Evangelism”, otherwiseknown as Dr. Paul McGrady. It wasabout 1966 in Oklahoma City andthe setting was unique as we shookhands across the white fence thatseparated the McGrady place fromthe Western Oaks Church of theNazarene property.Since that time I have hadthe privilege of special friendshipwith Chuck including revivals in thelocal church, district camp meetingsand treasured memories of personalfellowship that Genell and I haveshared with Chuck and Jeanne. Iheard Chuck preach at generalchurch events in the sixties andseventies as he sounded forth thetrumpet for revival throughout thechurch.Chuck has an awesome andcreative mind. He has an incrediblegift of preaching. He is a dynamicpersonal soul winner. He has givenhis life and energies as a God calledevangelist to the church. His serviceas Revivalism Coordinator was ademonstration of his priorities to affirmpersonally and corporately theimportance of holiness evangelism.Chuck is truly a man witha passion for God and love for thechurch manifested by his unswervingdevotion to evangelism.W. As I consideredthose guys with their ducktail hairstyle (Brylcreem was great stuff butit seemed more than a “little dab”did ‘em!), I was clearly impacted bythem. I will never forget my firstexposure to dorm life at Olivet whenI stayed a weekend with Chuck andPaul in Chapman Hall. I was about10 and, boy, did I learn stuff! After college and seminary,Chuck became, for many, the premierNazarene evangelist, and it wasa well-deserved appellation. For me,though, the great impact of ChuckMillhuff’s life was not those memoriesfrom my childhood years andbeyond, or even his always grippingpreaching, but his passionate andfocused call to holiness of heart andlife. From that he never wavered, and for that I will always be grateful.Dr. John SeamanMichigan District SuperintendentI have known ChuckMillhuff almost all of my life. Themanner of valuing every person, through word andaction. These are the bold features that leap off of aone-page letter from Paul to a “beloved friend.” Themessage is simple, yet beautifully profound: God’splan is all about relationships, and Jesus wants toshare the message of the gospel through our lives as well as our words.Philemon presents us with a picture of relationship as God designed for usto have with Him and with one another. The most staggering realizationfor me was to see that this is merely a “snapshot” of Paul’s life and howJesus works. What we see in the letter to Philemon is not an exception, but the norm of what He desires to be in all of us right where we live. It isthe expression of Jesus in everyday relationships. Nelson PerduePThere is in the study ofmusic a phrase called“sympathetic vibrations.”Perdue's PenHoliness: TheCraving of theHungry HeartWe are told that if one has two or three pianosin one room with keen acoustics andyou strike a chord on one piano, that chordwill send vibrations through all the pianosin the room. This is a vivid description ofwhat happens in the heart of one who hastruly been born again. The new believerhas been regenerated by the power of theSpirit and is tuned to the voice and leadershipof the Holy Spirit. The believer now has a spiritual appetiteand “hungers and thirsts for righteousness.”(Matt. 5:6 KJV) When hearing thecall of God to holiness, something beginsto pulsate within the heart. The Psalmistsaid, “Let the beauty of the Lord our Godbe upon us.” (Psalm 90:17 KJV) The fact isthat holiness is the essential nature of Godand there is no higher motive than to seekto be filled with the Holy Spirit. There isnothing more desirable than purity andmore abiding than love. Purity of heart andperfect love are the characteristics of entiresanctification. It is this quality of characterthat fits us for communion and fellowshipwith the one to whom we owe our forgiveness. When this truth is proclaimed to ourspiritual ears we are immediately drawn toHis call as a moth is drawn to a flame. ★Fall 2011 / EVANGELISTS' PERSPECTIVE / 13

Fires of RevivalBeauty for AshesIsaiah 61He waved goodbye ashe drove down the lane, towinga trailer behind a Jeep. Themoney in his pocket and his fewpossessions were all he had left.He set out on a new adventurethat would put his broken lifeback together again. His life had been spentin and out of rehab and jail.He found out the hard way, alcohol was not his friend. That which he thought he hadcontrol of had taken controlof him and ravaged his body, mind, and spirit. After completinga Christian-based rehab,he was believingGod for deliverance. Before this, he wentthe typical 12-steproute that led himon a roller-coaster oflimited times of sobriety. He wassick of that pattern, and readyfor complete surrender. Livingaway from the protection of agroup home was the only wayhe would truly know he wasfree. This was the moment! Thefirst time to experience independencefrom rehab and truedependence on God. It’s a longdrive to Colorado from Tennessee, especially after what he hadcome through. The future would tellthe story of a life completelydelivered from the demoniccontrol of alcohol ... working ata Christian camp and attendinga local Nazarene church, wherehis faithful friend was pastor ...learning to breathe free withoutthe accountability of a rehab, but with the awareness ofFriend Jesus living within. He became the owner ofa lost English bulldog, which ledhim miraculously to its owner ...his soul mate for life! They havesince directed a home for unwedmothers, worked with crisisboys, and have two children oftheir own. He is completing adegree at Indiana Wesleyan Universityin Marion, Indiana, andhas been delivered over 5 years. This transformed life is our son,Robb.Bob and Becky Gray have spent theirentire careers leading people in meaningfulworship. Together they plantedan International Church in Berlin,Germany. Becky has taught at NazareneBible College. For them worship isnot a matter of style, but attitude – anattitude of the heart that says, "Wedesire to worship the Lord in Spirit andtruth!" This past year I havewitnessed numerous examplesof the delivering ministry of theHoly Spirit. After I taught a BreakingFree seminar at Ft. Worth,Texas Northside Church of theNazarene, Pastor Barry Stevensdescribed it this way: “We hadNathan come to us for theBreaking Free seminar. The heartof my whole church was movedon Saturday night as hespoke about the entryway the enemy has ofgetting into our homes. That night many wenthome to clean theirhomes of the things that Satanwas using to penetrate theirlives. Sunday morning after Nathanpreached, the altars filledand I mean filled, with many beingsanctified and set free. Thatweekend opened the eyes ofmy church to their victory overSatan! A month later the churchis still excited about that weekendof ‘Breaking Free’!"I frequently receivephone calls requesting prayerfor deliverance. Not onlydid you teach me a few things, but you reinforcedmy strength to get through this. I spentthe night in my son's room armed with myBible and selected scripture, ready to defendand fight off what ever came in the night. But,praise God, nothing happened, but the firstgood night I believe my son has slept in years. Ican't begin to describe the happiness, joy andappreciation I have in my heart this morning. Let meshare answers to prayer in that revival. A wife/mother came to the altar and received victory. After returning to her pew, a short time latershe came back to the altar topray about fear. Victory came. Then she said, “I need to putpeople on the altar.” Victorycame. Next, she said, “I needto put self on the altar.” Byfaith, self and every need were placed on thealtar and victory came. In the same service avisiting pastor’s wife was anointed and prayedfor concerning a lump on her hand. As the serviceprogressed, and people praised the Lord, something happened. She stood and testifiedthat suddenly the lump vanished from herhand.Revival is possible even after a 10 yearlapse, as was witnessed in Stinesville, Indianawith Rev. Lee, who had been pastor therefor 18 months. They had 40 days of focusedprayer for revival and God definitely revivedHis people. Pastor says that the spiritual levelof the church has risen and many are seeingbeyond the church walls. Prayer is becoming away of life and there is a stronger presence ofGod and His will. C., June 4, 2011I had just about decided not to attendthe men’s prayer breakfast the evening before.During the night, I sensed the Lord’s directionotherwise. Thank you, Lord! There were severalmen and a couple of ladies who joined us fora delicious breakfast. I met a man named Raymond. He had been invited to services and tothis prayer breakfast. Raymond shared with mehis troubled life: drugs, alcohol, porn and a brokenhome and marriage. He had even thoughtof suicide. The loneliness was overwhelmingfor him. Tears rolled down his face as he told usthat he had already started preparing for Jesusto come into his life. He said he had a prayinggrandmother and mother and wanted to getright with God. Raymond had been cleaning hislife up knowing that God would not have beenpleased with what he was doing. He wantedto pray at the altar. He felt like he needed helpin praying, but when we gathered around him,he prayed the most beautiful prayer of repentanceand accepted the Lord Jesus into his life.Raymond has been attending services regularlyand is being discipled through Bible studies andfellowship. God is moving. Prayer is the work ofthe kingdom! Jesus makes the ordinary comealive!I would love to tell you all of anothercamp meeting in Hendersonville, N. C.July 3-10. A gospel trio fromDeckerd, Tenn. launched us intoan extraordinary week of seekingthe saving, sanctifying, delivering, healing Jesus we hungerand thirst after. The three evangelistssang and preached their hearts out andthe children and youth evangelists brought usto our knees with their anointed messages fromGod. I can still see that anointing service wheresome children prayed the prayer of faith overthe needy. Do you want something extraordinary?Get some ordinary people to meet withJesus. It will happen! NOBY EVANGELIST DAVID A. GALLIMOREEXCUSE(For Not Having a Revival)çThrough the years I have heard myfair share of excuses for why a localchurch can not schedule a revivalmeeting, or why a local church will cancel apreviously scheduled revival meeting. Themost common excuses are finances (wedon’t have enough money), and pastoraltransitions (we don’t have a pastor). Thenthere are even excuses about weather andseasonal calendar issues. It’s too hot forrevival, or it’s too cold for revival. It’s Christmas,so we couldn’t have a revival, or it’sEaster, so we couldn’t have a revival. Hardto believe, isn’t it? That we could not have arevival during the Advent of Christ, or duringHoly Week? This past spring I was scheduledto preach a revival at the Gateway CentralChurch of the Nazarene in St. Louis, Missouri.Three weeks before the meeting wasto begin, I was on the phone with the localpastor, Rev. Ray Thompson. We discussedsome of the last minute details and workedout transportation from the airport to thehotel and church. That conversation tookplace on Monday morning. Later that afternoon,Pastor Thompson died suddenly of amassive heart attack. He was only 49 yearsold. When I received the news of PastorRay’s sudden and tragic death my heart immediatelywent out to his wife, family, andthe local church. I contacted the churchoffice and shared our concerns and condolences, and I was completely prepared forthe church to cancel the upcoming revival.I mean this was a legitimate reason for acancellation. The church board secretarytold me, “Rev. Gallimore, our pastor has justdied, we really need a revival! There will beno cancellation!”The week before our meeting wasto begin a series of devastating tornadoshit the greater St. Louis metro. Would youbelieve, Gateway Central Church of theNazarene took a direct hit? The churchcampus was declared a “complete loss” bythe insurance company. When I receivedword of this tragedy, I was stunned! Howmuch can one congregation bear?Once again, I contacted the churchoffice and shared our heartbreak over theloss of the church property. And onceagain, I was completely prepared for thechurch to cancel the upcoming revival. The meeting was just a few days away. The church board secretary told me, “Rev.Gallimore, we have lost our pastor, and we22 / EVANGELISTS' PERSPECTIVE / Summer 2011

have now lost our church buildings. Wedesperately need a revival! There will beno cancellation!”Tammy and I flew into St. Louis thenext week (the airport had actually beenclosed for three days because of the tornadodamage), and we held the Sundaymorning service of the revival in a gymnasiumof a local community center. Over250 people gathered and celebrated thefact that Jesus was still in control and thechurch (the Body of Christ) was still intact, under horrible circumstances, if they arewilling to seek renewal. Gateway Centraltaught me that there is no excuse for nothaving a revival in your local church. Whenwe make excuses due to finances, pastoraltransitions, weather, and seasonal dates, even though the buildings were gone. Anoverwhelming sense of God’s presenceflooded the gymnasium with a spirit ofrevival and renewal. The Sunday evening service as wellas the remaining revival services, wereheld in a neighboring congregation’schurch building. I must confess it waskinda fun to preach Wesleyan Holinessall week in the John Calvin PresbyterianChurch! The good people of Gateway Centralcame out to the services night afternight. They responded to the Word of Godin a powerful and positive way. God tooktragedy and brought triumph to this congregationas they determined to “be thechurch,” not just attend a church!I witnessed first hand how Godwill honor and revive a local church, evenwe limit the possibilities of what God cando through even the most difficult ofsituations. Revival will not and cannot beheld captive to clocks and calendars, smallthinking and little faith. Thanks, GatewayCentral, for proving that God will take careof His church. May the revival fires continueto burn! ★After 20 years of growing churches in Pastoral Ministry,David Gallimore is fulfilling a lifelong dream as he answersGod's call into Evangelism.
