VAD Biocompatibility Issues• Hemolysis – destruction of red blood cells, requirestransfusion to prevent anemia• Bleeding – usually occurs soon after implant,requires transfusion(s) and potentially re-operation(s). Can lead to death.• Thromboembolism – occurs later in post-operativeoperativecourse, may lead to stroke, end organ infarct, ordeath• Infection – can occur at exit site, pump pocket, or inblood (sepsis).
