Keynote Addresses8:00 a.m., Wednesday June 15Keynote: Hospital + Surgeon:Your Changing CustomerMarshall Steele, M.D.Chief Executive OfficerMarshall Steele & AssociatesThe business climate for device manufacturers is rapidly changing. No longer is the surgeon the only customer. Physicians and hospitalsare increasingly finding ways to align their incentives, and hospitalsand physicians are beginning to speak with one voice. In thefuture, vendors may have many customers: the partnership of thehospital and the surgeon, patients, group purchasing organizationsand even the payers themselves.New device manufacturers are springing up that will providegeneric versions of our current implants at half the cost. Establisheddevice manufacturers have a choice: Do they just focuson the technical aspects of their products? Do they compete onprice? Do they partner with hospitals, surgeons, patients andinsurers in a new and different way?Transparency is quickly emerging caused by patients, physicians, insurers and hospitals. Medical device companies will need tocollect outcomes on their products in the hands of all users, notjust the elite few. This trend creates both concern as well as opportunityfor medical device companies. They must become partners, not suppliers. They must create value for all stakeholders andwork with them to improve healthcare from a quality perspective, and an economic one, as well. Woe to those that persist in theold economic model. We will discuss why these trends are occurring, how fast theywill occur and what device manufacturers should consider doingto face all new challenges.Dr. Marshall Steele is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Marshall Steele & Associates,a firm that implements musculoskeletal service lines andprograms in hospitals. The firm creates Destination Centers inorthopaedics and spine, provides data collection tools for bothpatient- and hospital-reported outcomes and a nascent nationalregistry for benchmarking and best practices.Dr. Steele started his orthopaedic practice in 1977 as a solopractitioner and grew it to 16 sub-specialized orthopaedic surgeons.Between 1996 and 2005, he also served as the MedicalDirector of Surgical Business Development at Anne ArundelMedical Center in Annapolis, Maryland. He was instrumentalin helping to develop many very successful specialty surgicalprograms that have received national attention. He has received numerous awards, including the Pascal Awardfor Youth Sports, The Leadership Award given by his peers, and was recently inducted into the Anne Arundel County BusinessHall of Fame. Dr. Steele has long been passionate aboutdefining, measuring and improving quality.
